- The character was based on and adapted from Poseidon and Neptune from Greco-Roman mythology.

- In The Marvel Super Heroes, Neptune was referenced in the animated series episodes "Not All My Power Can Save Me!", "When Fails the Quest", and "The End of the Quest". He was called Father Neptune who was worshipped and revered by the Atlanteans. During Namors quest to restore his throne, he received guidance from Neptune who spoke through the various aquatic animals.
