Biography

The Air-Walker in Fantastic Four v1 #120.

Gabriel was an extraterrestrial male who was originally an inhabitant of the planet Xandar. (Thor v1 #306) Upon joining the military, he came to serve to develop a legendary reputation whilst fighting on the colonial frontier for the benefit of the Xandarian empire. This saw his exploits being shown on holo-tapes and led to a statue made in his honour in the Garden of Eternal Remembrance. During this time, he met a young cadet called Pyreus Kril who stated that Gabriel was his hero and that he wanted to be his friend. This caught Lan by surprise as he never had time for friends and he accepted Pyreus as his first friend. Eventually, he grew unhappy with the military service and requested the admiral in Xandarian Space Command to man an old explorer ship called the Way-Opener. He took on a small crew and was joined by new graduated Pyrues Kril who wanted to join his friend on his mission. At first, Captain Lan was reluctant in taking on the young cadet but relented and accepted him as his second-in-command. It was then for the next three years that they embarked on a mission of exploration across the universe. (Uncanny Origins v1 #4) By adulthood, he came to join the space-service where he became a highly distinguished commander with far-flung exploits. He came to command a Xandarian explorer-ship dispatched into the fringes of the Andromeda Galaxy. During this mission, his second-in-command was Pyreus where one day they came upon a gargantuan spherical craft. This actually belonged to the World Devourer Galactus who abducted Gabriel with his ship moving into hyperspace. Galactus had desired a new Herald to help him find new worlds to consume and decided on Gabriel fulfilling that role. At first, he protested and wanted to be returned to his crew but eventually he relented with him being gifted with the Power Cosmic. In that time, he came to lead his master to many worlds to consume and though guilty at first he formed a close kinship with Galactus. During one scouting mission, he was fatally injured by the Ovoids though Galactus could still find a small spark of him still surviving and to prevent Gabriel dying he transferred his mind into a mechanical body. Thus, he came to live again which helped ease the loss that Galactus felt in his being. Despite the kinship, he came to send Air-Walker to Earth where he was charged with the task of recovering the former Herald that was the Silver Surfer. (Thor v1 #306)

In his first assignment, he arrived on a remote planet threatened by natural disaster and demonstrated the ability to manipulate energy fields to stabilize the environment temporarily, while also preparing to mark it as a candidate for Galactus’s consumption. Though he carried out his duty, his human consciousness struggled with the ethical weight of destroying inhabited worlds. (Fantastic Four v1 #54) In a subsequent mission, Air-Walker confronted the Fantastic Four when they attempted to protect a planet from Galactus. Using the Power Cosmic, he demonstrated the ability to fly at extreme speeds, generate energy blasts capable of planetary-scale destruction, and form force fields to counter incoming attacks. He engaged in strategic maneuvers to delay the heroes without resorting to lethal force, reflecting both his training as a Nova officer and the moral hesitation inherent in a being still linked to human consciousness. His battle with the Fantastic Four revealed his internal conflict between duty to Galactus and lingering empathy for sentient life. (Fantastic Four v1 #55) Later, Air-Walker was deployed to investigate an unstable star system whose collapse threatened neighboring civilizations. He manipulated gravitational fields and cosmic energies to protect critical habitats while simultaneously marking less essential worlds for Galactus. His interventions demonstrated mastery of the Power Cosmic, as he balanced both protective and destructive actions with precision. Despite his immense power, Air-Walker remained guided by a sense of responsibility, ensuring that he carried out Galactus’s will with as little unnecessary harm as possible. (Thor v1 #199)

During the Annihilation War, the Air-Walker was targeted by the Seekers of Annihilus who was the master of the Negative Zone. The Annihilation Wave from that realm was invading the positive-matter reality and part of their goal was claiming the Power Cosmic for their master. Thus, Ravenous was dispatched alongside his hunters and the specially bred curs with hunting down the Heralds of Galactus. Gabriel was their first prey when he investigated the destruction of his homeworld of Xandar. The Air-Walkers mechanical nature was something that the Seekers did not desire though they still managed to ambush him when the Silver Surfer arrived to aid his fellow Herald. They managed to escape but the damage to Gabriel's body was too severe and the Surfer destroyed his form to prevent the Seekers from claiming it. (Annihilation: Silver Surfer v1 #1)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Air-Walker was a male humanoid transformed by the Power Cosmic into a metallic, silver-blue figure. His armor-like body emitted a faint luminescence, with a helmet that obscured his facial features except for glowing eyes. His form was sleek and streamlined, suggesting both speed and cosmic authority, and his limbs were capable of generating and channeling energy blasts. He carried no conventional weapon, instead relying entirely on the Power Cosmic, signaling that he was more a force of nature than a conventional combatant. (Fantastic Four v1 #54)

In personality, Air-Walker was disciplined, honorable, and contemplative. Despite his transformation, he retained the memory and ethics of Gabriel Lan, often weighing the morality of his actions against his duty to Galactus. He was reluctant to harm innocents when possible and displayed respect for heroic figures, even while opposing them under orders. His demeanor combined the calm of a military officer with the gravitas of a cosmic agent, reflecting the duality of a human mind fused with the overwhelming authority of the Power Cosmic. (Fantastic Four v1 #54)

The Xandarian was noted for his wanderlust who was more at home in deep space. (Thor v1 #306) It was this trait that made him become dissatisfied with the colonial action of the Xandarian empire as he wanted to simply explore other worlds. This saw him abandoning active military service in exchange for manning an old explorer ship. (Uncanny Origins v1 #4)

Originally, he protested at the actions of his master Galactus and felt guilt at the worlds he was forced to give to the World Devourer. However, in time, came to understand the tragedy of Galactus as a being who was a slave to his endless hunger. This touched Gabriel deeply and he came to speak to his master with the two forming a companionship that the World Devourer came to crave as they each felt a kindred spirit in the other. It was this reason that when Air-Walker was slain that Galactus used his knowledge to help ensure that Gabriel lived in a mechanical form after the death of his biological body. (Thor v1 #306)

Powers and abilities

Originally, Gabriel was an ordinary Xandarian but this changed upon his encounter with Galactus who gifted him with the Power Cosmic and turned him into a Herald. (Thor v1 #306) Air-Walker possessed the abilities granted by the Power Cosmic, including flight at faster-than-light speeds, manipulation of energy on a planetary scale, creation of protective force fields, and matter manipulation. He could survive unassisted in space and withstand extreme temperatures, radiation, and physical impacts. Though subordinate in will to Galactus, his mastery of these abilities made him a formidable herald capable of confronting entire planetary defenses, cosmic phenomena, and even other powerful beings with precision and efficiency. (Fantastic Four v1 #54)

With his abilities, he could fly in the sky and into deep space without the need for life support equipment. On his back were fiery wings which he referred to as his Cape of Destiny which he claimed to be the source of his life and strength. Gabriel could emit powerful bursts of wind on a planet and fire powerful energy blasts from his hands. (Fantastic Four v1 #121)

He was armed with a weapon known as the Bow of Gabriel that was a tool he used to prepare worlds for consumption by the World Devourer. A single arrow was shot into the planet's core that unleashed a terraforming wave known as the Dark Tide which transformed the world's minerals. The process made the minerals more nutritious for Galactus and also warped the natives to become more docile so that they willingly accepted their fate as their world was devoured. (Black Order v1 #2) The Air-Walker also had in his possession the trumpet of Gabriel which he could manifest at any moment and was used to summon forth his master Galactus. (Fantastic Four v1 #121)
