History

Aiur was a jungle world located on the fringe of the Milky Way galaxy which came to be among the engineered planets of the Xel'Naga who were conducting a grand experiment. Part of their efforts led to the digging of vast subterranean caverns that existed beneath the surface. The Xel'naga came to construct a temple to mark the site where they first set foot upon Aiur.

These highly advanced beings were looking to create the ultimate life form with this highly advanced race of beings focusing their efforts on Aiur that was showing some promising results. The planet came to evolve an incredibly adaptable race that were able to survive the harsh natural conditions and climate. This race sowed a level of strength and speed unlike any of the other species the Xel'Naga ad known were they came develop a rudimentary tribal society based on group-hunting and warrior rule. However, the most distinctive characteristic of the species was that they communicated to each other through a very complex method of intrinsic telepathy allowing them to operate communally thus acting with great efficiency during their strikes. The development of the species pleased the Xel'Naga who decided that they were the first of their experiments to evolve beyond the feral constraints of more baser life forms. Thus, the came to be known as the Protoss or 'the First Born' who lived harmoniously and in seclusion on their world for hundreds of generations without knowing of the Xel'Naga who were watching them from afar. However, growing antagonism from the Protoss led to the Xel'Naga leaving Aiur and their creations behind. This resulted in the Protoss forgetting how to attune themselves to their primal psychic link resulting in a devastating period known as the Aeon of Strife.

Eventually, Khas unearthed khaydarin crystals left behind by the xel'naga. He channeled their primal energies through himself and rediscovered the communal psionic bond of the protoss. Khas revitalized protoss society through the Khala, which called upon the them to forgo their old feuds and reunite. Gradually, the protoss embraced their psychic link and were flooded with the thoughts, emotions, and experiences felt by every protoss. The following centuries saw a golden age on Aiur. Its war-torn continents were healed; its native species flourished; and five cities and thirty-eight temples were erected across its surface. The protoss population swelled to billions, and Aiur became the hub of the Protoss Empire. A few rogue tribes rejected the Khala. The Conclave ordered the Templar Caste to eradicate them, but instead Adun attempted to convince the rogues of the Khala's truth by teaching them how to manipulate their own latent psionic powers. Without the Khala's discipline, however, their powers spiraled out of control and unleashed psionic storms across Aiur. The Conclave banished the rogue tribes from Aiur.

In 2500, the Zerg launched a full-scale invasion of Aiur where they came to expand to gradually conquer the world. The protoss defenders were overrun and countless zerg carved swaths of destruction across Aiur's continents. They seized the khaydarin crystals and destroyed the xel'naga temple before setting the khaydarin crystal in its place, allowing the Overmind to embed itself in Aiur's surface. Praetor Fenix fought against the zerg but was hampered by the ability of their cerebrates to reincarnate. He was also held back by the incompetent leadership of the Conclave. A Protoss counterattack headed by Tassadar was responsible for destroying the Zerg's ruling intelligence namely the Overmind thus disrupting the control over the broods.

Without direction, the Zerg broods began to scour the planet of other life which forced the remaining surviving Protoss to evacuate to Shakuras.

During the End War, the Protoss Daelaam embarked on the ambitious plan to recover their homeworld. Thus, the Golden Armada was assembled under Artanis where it began the first steps of the Reclamation of Aiur.
