Biography

Origin

Alexander Luthor Jr. was the ginger haired offspring of Alexander Luthor and Lois Luthor of Earth-3. In this reality, the inhabitants of the world were terrorised by the Crime Syndicate of America with his father being a hero who used his science to oppose them. (Crisis on Infinite Earths v1 #1)

He came to be at the abandoned satellite that had been the former headquarters of the Justice League. The child was found by Harbinger who had orders to bring the boy to her master the Monitor. (Crisis on Infinite Earths v1 #2) At his satellite, the young Luthor went through a series of experiments and tests where the Monitor was amazed to find that the child possessed both positive matter and anti-matter in his body. In addition, the child began to rapidly age to adulthood where the Monitor believed Alexander Luthor Jr. would play an important role in stopping the upcoming crisis. (Crisis on Infinite Earths v1 #3)

Infinite Crisis

Within the other-dimensional paradise, the four un-aging survivors of the old universe had nothing to do but watch events unfold in the new universe for many years. However, he came to find that this dimension was anything but a paradise where they were forced to see their past constantly. In time, Alex Luthor came to resent the events that forced him trapped in this life. He came to find that his compatriots were content with this life as they could change their surroundings according to their thoughts. This time also saw Alexander becoming jealous of the others for having full lives and looked to cultivate their own hatred of their fate. In this time, Kal-L began to find that his Lois Lane was dying of old age despite all efforts in revitalising her in this world. Meanwhile, Alex began to make Superboy-Prime angry at this world as well and in that moment he came to witness the young Superboy punch reality itself causing a change the main reality as a result. This led to Luthor believing that their was a means of escaping this dimension and confessed to Superboy-Prime that prior to coming to this realm that he was presented two other realms where one seemed like heaven and another was hell. However, he came to learn that this was actually Apokolips and that they had an option of escaping this dimension and change New Earth according to fulfil their own desires.(Infinite Crisis Secret Files and Origins v1 #1)

Escaping from the false paradise, Luthor set in motion a master plan that would have devastating consequences for the universe. Luthor secretly had Superboy move entire planets in an effort to shift the center of the universe away from Oa, subsequently provoking a galactic war between Rann and Thanagar. Using the resources of a commandeered Brother Eye, Luthor gathered intelligence on the super-powered community of the new combined universe and mustered the forces of the OMACs in attacking an increasingly-fragmented heroic community. Meanwhile, while disguising himself as the Lex Luthor of the current reality, Luthor preyed upon the fears of the super-villain community in order to form a new Society of Villains which, united, could bring down the heroes of New Earth, and build the machines Luthor would need to fulfill his ambitions. Finally, Luthor struck at the mystical forces of the universe by manipulating the Spectre who was currently untethered by a human host thus being tricked into hunting down and destroying magic itself. (Infinite Crisis v1 #5) He came to take the appearance of New Earth's Lex Luthor and assumed his identity where in that guise he helped found the Society. (Villains United v1 #6)

As Lex Luthor, he was present alongside the Society as they welcomed Black Adam into their inner circle. (JSA v1 #70)

Penguin started a new crime empire in Bludhaven and arranged for an arms deal with The Society. Batgirl was on to Penguin, so he sent the Brotherhood of Evil after her. Penguin assured Luthor, Deathstroke and Calculator that Batgirl was no longer a concern to them, but Deathstroke was skeptical, knowing how dangerous and tough Batgirl was. Batgirl did survive, putting a kibosh on the arms deal. (Batgirl v1 #62) When Batgirl foiled Penguin’s arms deal with the Brotherhood of Evil she damaged his standing in The Society. Penguin met with Luthor, Dr. Psycho and Calculator demanding they help him take down Batgirl once and for all. He said Deathstroke was clearly the man for the job, and Deathstroke considered his proposal. (Batgirl v1 #63)

Luthor spoke to Black Adam via viewscreen to tell him their were complaints about how Adam used force to recruit villains for the Society. Luthor wanted people that believed in his cause, not cowed hirelings. Adam and Luthor traded veiled threats before ending their conversation. (JSA v1 #73) Luthor and the Society inner circle watched the trial of Atom-Smasher, who was being tried for breaking international law in the invasion of Khandaq. Adam commented that he was a man of conviction, but Luthor called Atom a fool. Calculator sent a video conference call to inform them of a rumor that would make the JLA s brainwashing of Dr. Light pale in comparison to what he d learned. (JSA v1 #76)

Tokamak handed his clone daughter Gehenna over to Luthor to power his reality-altering machine in Brazil. Tokamak though had no real interest in helping Luthor, but knew the villain had Firestorm in captivity for the same purpose, and he wanted his daughter to insinuate herself into Firestorm s life. (Firestorm: The Nuclear Man v #31)

With his plans set in motion, Luthor became confident enough to finally reveal his presence to Kal-L's cousin, Power Girl, who had until recently not remembered that she was also a survivor of the former Earth-Two. Luthor told her that the current reality was corrupt because it had used Earth-One as a template, and that, with her help, he and her cousin could re-form the universe with Earth-Two as its basis. Claiming that this new reality would help Lois Lane-Kent recover from her illness, he was able to convince a distraught Kal-L to go along with his plans, even though Power Girl and Lois herself remained unsure. (Infinite Crisis v1 #2) As his schemes reached fruition, Luthor was finally ready to reveal his ultimate plan. By using the databases of the Brother Eye, Luthor had managed to determine which of the modern reality's super-powered beings had originally come from the various "infinite Earths" of the pre-Crisis universe, and which beings could be used to direct the outcome of Luthor's own universe. He used the Society to build a massive dimensional "tuning fork", that would allow Luthor to take advantage of the raw power brought about by the change in the nature of magic that had occurred during the Spectre's war against sorcery. (Infinite Crisis v1 #3) Focusing the device on the new center of the universe (a point concurrent with the center of the former Earth-Two's universe), Luthor would be able to split the universe into a multiverse once again, and then sift through the realities to take the pieces he wished to retain and destroy those he wished removed from existence. (Infinite Crisis v1 #4)

With sorcerers dead, the resultant raw form of magic became a source of power that his device can tap into and allow Luthor to achieve his goal. This is personified by the power commanded by the wizard Shazam after his death. To accomplish the next stage of his plan, he needs lightning provided by one of Shazam's champions, Black Adam, who says the word due to influence from the Psycho-Pirate. Alexander programs the tower by granting sentience to the Brother Eye satellite, allowing the system to evolve into a brain capable of directing the tower's energies and mapping the new multiverse to help him find the perfect Earth he seeks. (Infinite Crisis v1 #4)

Legacy

In the Hall of Justice, the Justice League were attacked by the Antimatter Universe's Crime Syndicate of America. They join forces with Doctor Impossible's team to steal Alexander Luthor's corpse, intending to resurrect him in the Chamber of Resurrection. While the other Crime Syndicate members keep the JLA busy, Owlman sneaks off to allow Doctor Impossible access to the resurrection device. At the last moment, Doctor Impossible apparently betrays the Syndicate and substitutes Alexander's corpse for himself to resurrect Darkseid. The plot went awry when the machine instead gave birth to a new villain known as Omega Man. (Justice League of America v2 #50) Alexander was temporarily resurrected by the Tangent Green Lantern later in the story, allowing him to atone for his past misdeeds by helping to defeat the Omega Man and CSA. (Justice League of America v2 #53)
