Benz was a Soviet agent. While he and a fellow agent were eating at an outdoor restaurant, Benz noticed Tatiana Romanova boarding the Orient Express along with James Bond and Kerim Bey, and told his partner to report back to the Russian embassy while he boarded the train to catch them. He was the one who was caught however, and after being tied up was guarded by Bey. Both of them were eventually killed by Donald Grant, who staged their deaths to make it look as though they killed each other.
