History

Original Timeline

The Black Dragon (黒龍会 Kokuryū Kai) were a criminal organization that had formed in Earthrealm. Its origins were actually traced to the much more secretive and older Red Dragon. In the last century, a growing number of their members grew dissatisfied with the code of the Red Dragon organization. These members formed a splinter group causing them to separate into their own klan that became known as the Black Dragon. Since that time, the Red Dragon targeted this group that composed of warriors broken away from their ranks and sought their elimination as they were seen as infidels.

With Shang Tsung's defeat, the sorcerer fled the tournament and departed for Outworld where he took both Sonya as well as Kano with him as captives to appease the Emperor Shao Kahn. This was used to hold a second Mortal Kombat tournament within Outworld itself with the Earthrealm warriors arrive to compete to free Sonya Blade. Despite their plans, Outworld came to lose the tournament with Major Jax Briggs rescuing the two captives though Kano escaped back into Outworld rather than risk capture. Whilst there, he bargained for his life and offered to assist in training Outworld's armies in the use of modern weapons. With his life spared, Kano proceeded to use deceit and trickery to get himself appointed as a General.

After Shao Kahn's defeat, Kano was believed dead and that the Black Dragon klan was almost destroyed with its sole surviving member being Jarek. This led to Jarek being hunted by the Special Forces with Agent Sonya Blade in pursuit of him for crimes against humanity where he fled to Edenia. Around this time, the dark Elder God Shinnok was freed from the Netherrealm whereupon he sought control of all the realms. This caused Jarek to reluctantly work alongside Earth's warriors including Sonya Blade against Shinnok. After Shinnok's defeat, Jarek attempted to flee but was confronted by Jax Briggs who seemingly killed the Black Dragon warrior after he fell off a ravine. However, Jarek had survived and in the aftermath remained in hiding whilst he healed. At some point, former Black Dragon member Kabal was defeated and left for dead by the Red Dragon leader Mavado. It was then that the Chaosrealmer Havik emerged where he healed Kabal and he devoted himself to the Black Dragon once more. He then decided to re-organize the klan under his leadership and began recruiting new members into their ranks.

A faction of the clan under Kabal were operating in Earthrealm where they discovered the abandoned Temple of Argus. At the time, the awakened Taven was searching the site for clues from his parents leading to a fight with the Black Dragon.

Reboot Timeline

During the Armageddon, Shao Kahn ultimately won leading to the destruction of all of creation but in his last moments Raiden sent his memories back in time to his past self. With these visions, Raiden managed to alter the timeline in an attempt to avert the future leading to a different series of events. In the new timeline, Kano’s history largely remained the same where he was the criminal head of the Black Dragon clan. The U.S. Special Forces attempted to halt the syndicate’s activities with Kano pretending to be an informant. They were unaware of his true identity as the clan’s leader until he betrayed them whereupon Sonya Blade was dispatched to apprehend him as he participated in the Mortal Kombat Tournament. Afterwards, the Black Dragon began trading in arms with the forces of Outworld for their inevitable invasion of Earthrealm.

After Shao Kahn's death, Mileena claimed the title of Kahnum from her 'father' but she was deposed by Kotal Kahn and his followers. This led to a civil war erupting in Outworld between the two factions who intended to maintain dominance in the realm. During this time, Kano and the Black Dragon secretly allied themselves with Mileena.

Kano later came to ally the Black Dragon with the Titan Kronika who was re-ordering the timeline. The resultant timequake led to past versions of Kano an Erron Black to emerge where they worked to ensure Kroika's victory.
