The novel The Dagger Affair notes that THRUSH evolved from Professor James Moriarty's criminal organization, tying UNCLE to Sherlock Holmes. The novel The Rainbow Affair includes references to Inspector West, Fu Manchu, The Saint, The Avengers, Miss Marple, Father Brown and Department Z. The Utopia Affair has an appearance by Rusterman's, Nero Wolfe's favorite restaurant. The Hollow Crown Affair has Solo and Kuryakin making a stop in Collinwood (from Dark Shadows). These various references connect UNCLE to the Wold Newton Universe by extension.
