Biography
Origin
Cletus Kasady was the son of Roscoe Kasady and his wife Louise Kasady. (Carnage v2 #12) According to one account, his mother was admitted to Ravencroft Institute where he was born there one night on a Wednesday. He was born choking as his umbilical cord was wrapped around his throat where he was said to had died but was revived shortly afterwards. (Web of Venom: Carnage Born v1 #1)
His Nana regularly struck him as she sent him for chores like getting cigarettes and shouted at him calling him a bad boy and a useless child. One day, he pushed his grandmother on her wheelchair down the stairs to kill her. (Carnage v2 #12) From a young age, his murderous nature manifested in numerous attempts to kill his own mother such as dropping a television into the bath with her but she managed to pull the cord in time. His mother at some point had a dog that she named Fifi with Cletus hating the pet and believed that she loved it more than him. One day, the dog was in the basement when Kasady killed it with an electric drill with him being found by the bloody remains when his mother was looking for Fifi. He later claimed that he accidently killed the dog and said that his mother told lies about him to his father about the pets death. This culminated in her one day chasing Kasady to his room but he rigged a line to cause her to trip to the ground where he tried to kill her but she fought him off. In anger, she pulled a knife and was ready to kill her son when Kasady's father came in the room to stop her. She was killed and Kasady later told the police that his father murdered his mother leading to him taken away for trial. (Venom: Carnage Unleashed v1 #1) However, another account held that his mother was killed when she tried to stop his father from beating him with Louise Kasady accidently knocked her head on the table with her dying as a result. (Carnage v2 #12) Kasady sometimes confused the deaths of his parents with those of his step-dad and foster mom. (AXIS: Carnage v1 #2)
It was noted that he was raised an orphan at the St. Estes Home for Boys in Brooklyn. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #361) Whilst there, he grew to love his older teacher and confessed his feelings to her. She rejected him and in his anger he pushed her onto the path of a bus thus killing her. Afterwards, he was responsible for burning down the orphanage that he used to live. (AXIS: Carnage v1 #2) St. Estes later came to be ravaged by a fire with the remains of the home's disciplinary administrator being found in the rubble. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #361)
Upon his arrest, he came to be convicted for 11 murders that were known though Cletus bragged of many more. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #361)
Maximum Carnage
Fed up with his cell-mate's disdain towards him, Cletus decided to murder Brock using a shiv he'd created. Before he could do so, the Venom symbiote entered their cell through the window and bonded to Brock, who — transformed into Venom once more — incited a destructive jailbreak. Unknown to its human host, the symbiote was pregnant and gave birth during the disastrous rescue. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #345) Left behind in the midst of the riot that ensued, the symbiote's spawn bonded with Kasady. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #384) Empowered far beyond the levels of Spider-Man and Venom combined, Kasady dubbed himself Carnage and made good his escape — intent on using his new-found power to disseminate his lethal doctrine: his first victim, a security guard named Ramone he pulled through the bars of his cell. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #359) Upon gaining his powers, he went about murdering people in a series of serial killings in the city starting with a staff member at Empire State University. By this point, he would stay in the ruins of the St. Estes home when Spider-Man came to track him down. It was then that he fought the Wall-Crawler as Carnage where the hero struggled against Kasady's new powers. Nearly overwhelming Spider-Man, their fight was interrupted by the police where Carnage looked to kill them. This led to Spider-Man managing to knock him aside to save the police officers but Kasady used this as an opportunity to escape and continue his reign of terror in the city. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #361)
Kasady was taken to the Vault where he was studied and it was held that he could be admitted into the Ravencroft Institute to help treat him. Whilst there, the doctors were looking to cure him of his insanity but the staff were unaware that Cletus had the Carnage Symbiote bonded to his blood. After piercing his skin, the blood allowed Carnage to manifest where he began to slaughter the staff at the Institute. Kasady, however, came to reason that Spider-Man and Venom would target him if he made openly began slaughtering people leading to him deciding to bide his time. During his murder of the staff, he heard an in-mate cheering him on leading to Cletus encountering Shriek with the two becoming insane lovers that wanted to go on a rampage in the city. The pair escaped the Asylum where they were ambushed by the Doppelganger after mistaking him for Spider-Man. Carnage battled the duplicate creature where he was prepared to kill him but Shriek stopped Kasady with her deciding to adopt the Doppleganger. Cletus relented and decided to accept the creature as part of his family with him being Shriek's child though he went to deal with another piece of business. (Spider-Man Unlimited v1 #1)
While contained in a specialized super-max cell in the Manhattan Correctional Facility, Cletus Kasady was attacked by Venom, who ripped the Carnage symbiote from his body and devoured it. (Peter Parker: Spider-Man v1 #10) Without the symbiote, Kasady attempted to reassume the Carnage persona by covering himself in red paint and continuing his killing sprees, claiming that he still possessed at least some of Carnage's strength and convinced that he only needed to kill Spider-Man and Venom to regain his symbiote. Spider-Man nevertheless easily defeated him in a fight, and he was sent back to prison. (Peter Parker: Spider-Man v1 #13)
During a battle with Venom, Carnage discovered his symbiote was about to give birth. Feeling threatened by its existence, Carnage attempted to suppress the birth and destroy it. (Venom Vs. Carnage v1 #1) However, Venom wanted to raise and train the new symbiote as an ally and partner. Weakened by the actual birthing, Carnage was unable to kill the newborn, bonding it to Patrick Mulligan, a New York City cop. Venom named the new symbiote Toxin, after himself. (Venom Vs. Carnage v1 #2) Fearing that Toxin would grow to become someone like Spider-Man, Venom made a temporary alliance with Carnage to kill his 'grandson'. (Venom Vs. Carnage v1 #3) In the end, they were defeated by the combined efforts of Spider-Man, Toxin, and Black Cat. (Venom Vs. Carnage v1 #4)
He was later kept contained at the maximum security supervillain prison known as the Raft. Its power was shutdown causing all the supervillains to be free from their cells. As a result, Carnage was freed and he fought Luke Cage, Spider-Woman along with Daredevil where he nearly overpowered them. However, the Sentry was convinced to lend his aid and he grabbed onto Carnage where he took him into orbit after which he ripped him in half seemingly killing Kasady. (New Avengers v1 #2)
Carnage USA
Though mortally wounded, the Symbiote entered into a state to keep the host alive and functioning though the pair were trapped in space. Michael Hall of Hall Industries had a space salvage crew find the remains of Carnage in orbit following his apparent death at the hands of the Sentry with the remains brought back to his corporate headquarters. He had no need for Cletus Kasady but extract live tissue samples from the Symbiote in order to serve as the baseline for a new revolutionary form of prosthetic and technology. This was used to build a series of symbiotic alloy armored suits for an elite team of employees that became the Iron Rangers. Kasady survived but was kept locked away in a secure facility whilst the Symbiote was removed to produce the baseline for Hall Industries new technology. Whilst touring the corporate facility, the new prosthetic limb in Dr. Tanis Nieves lashed out as the Symbiote took over the arm and killed anyone in its path against the hosts will. It forced Nieves to break open the container for the Symbiote which bonded to her and forced her to find Cletus Kasady where it re-bonded with him. The Iron Rangers attempted to restrain him but the Symbiote informed Kasady that part of it was used in their armored suits with the wearers killed in the process. This allowed him to take control of their bodies and forcibly merged them into his form where he battled Spider-Man and Iron Man. (Carnage v1 #4) Inside the giant suit, he intended to kill Michael Hall and easily overpowered the two heroes that attempted to stop him. This was until Dr. Tanis Nieves bonded to the Carnage Symbiote's spawn thus becoming Scorn where she forced Shriek to unleash a powerful sonic scream to wound Kasady. He managed to escape and used a symbiotic tether to control the suit which was destroyed by Iron Man and Spider-Man. During his escape, he killed a dog before finding an isolated homestead where he and Doppleganger resided as they tortured a person with Kasady planning his next rampage. (Carnage v1 #5)
Cletus was put into custody in the Thunderbolts Mountain and the remnants of the Carnage symbiote on his person were seemingly destroyed, though it regenerated within his blood once more. Cletus was contacted by beings of the Microverse, who managed to see inside his mind and offer him a treat: they would give him the Microverse to get a whole new universe to kill in exchange for his services. Transforming into Carnage and escaping, Cletus traveled to the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Texas and used a new technology to escape to the Microverse, even after Scarlet Spider tried to stop him. (Minimum Carnage: Alpha v1 #1)
He later managed to escape with Shriek where Kasady decided that his prior plans were too big and ambitious with him instead deciding to go back to basics. This meant going around towns in order to indulge in carnage and murder people. These deaths were showcased on the news which attracted the attention of Deadpool who was able to pinpoint Cletus's whereabouts cause he himself was similarly insane. (Deadpool vs. Carnage v1 #1)
Kasady came to believe that he had been lied to by the world in that he believed he was following chaos yet his actions seemed to had followed a pattern. Whilst in the Carrington Hospital, he was approached by Magneto who was recruiting various supervillains to aid him against the Red Skull who attempted to destroy the world now that he possessed the power of Onslaught. At first, Cletus refused but he was convinced to join this team simply due to the random chaotic act of being the planet's saviour. Among his teammates was Deadpool where he promised a reckoning with him once the fight was over. (Magneto v3 #11) Noticing Deadpool was part of Magneto's team, Carnage joined intending to exact revenge, but following the inversion spell which changed the moral axis of those in the island, they parted amicably. (Avengers & X-Men: AXIS v1 #3) Noticing Deadpool was part of Magneto's team, Carnage joined intending to exact revenge, but following the inversion spell which changed the moral axis of those in the island, they parted amicably. (Avengers & X-Men: AXIS v1 #3) After the inversion, Cletus returned to New York, stopping a robbery and apprehending the Squid with zero fatalities. (Avengers & X-Men: AXIS v1 #4) Even though the spell brought out a desire to do good, his sociopathic tendencies made it hard for him to behave like a hero, causing him to brutalize criminals and still be treated as a villain. After saving reporter Alice Gleason from a new Sin-Eater, whom Kasady seemingly killed, he kidnapped her to teach him how to be a real hero. (Even though the spell brought out a desire to do good, his sociopathic tendencies made it hard for him to behave like a hero, causing him to brutalize criminals and still be treated as a villain. After saving reporter Alice Gleason from a new Sin-Eater, whom Kasady seemingly killed, he kidnapped her to teach him how to be a real hero. (AXIS: Carnage v1 #1) Alice agreed to help him be good as long as he promised not to hurt her, which he accepted. They headed to a church for Cletus to confess his sins but he attacked a tomb digger thinking he was robbing from the graves. Alice instead recorded his confession in her phone and secretly sent it to her boss. He later stopped a bank robbery but tried to burn the bank to stop future robberies. He fled as the police arrived but Alice fell and was kidnapped by the Sin-Eater while Carnage was surrounded by the police. (AXIS: Carnage v1 #2) Despite being shot down by two missiles, Carnage located the Sin-Eater and rescued Alice. The Sin-Eater — who claimed to be the spirit of Emil Gregg — fed on Carnage's sins, growing into a giant while Cletus feels the burden on his conscience being relieved. Carnage defeated him by overloading him with a last sin: that he loved all the destruction he caused, and the Sin-Eater dwindles into a shriveled corpse that disintegrates. Feeling reborn, Carnage thanks the Sin-Eater's corpse for absolving his sins before having his head shot off by Alice. Regenerating, Carnage asked why she betrayed him, and Alice admitted that she had lied to him about being a good person and had only been using him for personal gain, screaming at the newly arrived police to open fire. Carnage misinterpreted her betrayal as a warning that falling in love was dangerous, and reaffirmed his desire to become a superhero while escaping. (AXIS: Carnage v1 #3)
Absolute Carnage
Though seemingly his dead, his body came into Earth's orbit where his Symbiote attempted to protect him as it fell into re-entry. With the last of its form, the Carnage Symbiote sacrificed itself in order to ensure that Kasady came to the surface though he died in the process. His body was found by locals who informed the authorities with an armed response to take over the body as the discovery of Cletus resulted in a heightened response to arrest him. During the transport of his remains, the armed escort came under attack from cultists that worshipped the cosmic being called Knull who was the god of the Symbiotes. They took Kasady's body as they believed he could be an amplifier to communicate with Knull and bring about their dark deity's release. Thus, they bonded a fragment of a Symbiote used by Knull to Kasady thus restoring him where his body fought the cosmic being for dominance. He consumed one of the cultists that had been bonded to a Symbiote with Carnage wanting to deepen this connection to Knull. This saw him being informed that this could only happen if he absorbed Symbiote Codex fragments that existed in everyone person that served as a host to a Symbiote with Kasady looking to seek them all out. (Web of Venom: Carnage Born v1 #1) Through the Church of the New Darkness, he took control of Doverton once more where he began harvesting the spines of people that had been infected by the Carnage Symbiote as he prepared the way for Knull to be freed. (Web of Venom: Cult of Carnage v1 #1) He then disguised himself as Eddie Brock and got himself arrested where he was placed in Ryker's Island penitentiary where he warned about the coming of Knull. This was simply a ruse as once in the prison he encountered Lee Price who he killed in order to claim the Symbiote in his body and then escaped after killing numerous guards as he continued his search for other former Symbiote hosts. (Free Comic Book Day 2019 Spider-Man/Venom)
He battled the Hulk where he managed to force him to revert back to Banner and ripped the Venom Symbiote from him. Kasady then bonded with it thus gaining the power he needed to finally awaken Knull where he set off into space to the Klyntar homeworld with Eddie Brock in close pursuit. (Absolute Carnage v1 #4) Kasady's plan was to absorb the last codex fragment that resided in Dylan Brock though he arranged it that either he absorbed the remaining fragment to awaken Knull or that Brock killed him to absorb his Symbiote which would complete the circuit thus causing Eddie to awaken the god of the Symbiotes. In desperation, Eddie killed Kasady to save his son thus resulting in him merging with the Symbiote fragments which reconnected the hive allowing Knull to be freed from his imprisonment. Thus, whilst Carnage as defeated, the dark god was released in the process though Eddie did not share this information with the other heroes who believed that they were victorious in defeating Kasady. (Absolute Carnage v1 #5)
After Eddie was saved by Dylan and the Venom symbiote, Cletus bonded the Carnage-ized Grendel symbiote to a shark and escaped the Isla de Huesos. After several weeks, Cletus attempted to take part in Knull's invasion of Earth, taking over one of the crew of a whaling ship. However, by that point Eddie had defeated Knull and become the new God of Symbiotes, telepathically telling Cletus that Carnage had no place in his reformed Symbiote Hive. As hundreds of symbiotes controlled by Venom attacked him, Carnage was thrown into the ocean and the Carnage-ized Grendel symbiote was devoured by a horde of symbiote-controlled sharks. (Carnage: Black, White & Blood v1 #2)
Extreme Carnage
Though killed, Kasady's mind came to survive and resided within the hive of the Symbiotes that was ruled by Knull until the King in Black's destruction. Eddie Brock later killed Knull and took his place as leader of the hive but Carnage managed to remain undetected where he was gathering an army of Symbiotes that followed him. (Extreme Carnage: Scream v1 #1) Meanwhile, pieces of the Carnage Symbiote came to survive infect various types of sea life until it took over a shark. The creature went to the surface where the Symbiote took possession of a soldier and kept jumping hosts until he took over an Alchemax middle-man where he then travelled to the U.S. Once there, he had a meeting with Senator Peter Krane with Kasady taking over him in order to use his and the Friends of Humanity's anti-alien agenda to stir hate in the world. (Extreme Carnage: Alpha v1 #1) Cletus bonded the Carnage symbiote to Peter's seemingly kindhearted son Arthur Krane, intending to transfer from him to Peter, but was delighted to discover that Arthur was actually a sociopathic serial killer like himself, and co-opted Arthur's plot to assassinate his father and take his place as Senator. (Extreme Carnage Omega v1 #1) Cletus lured Flash into a trap at one of Peter Krane's political rallies, tricking him into believing that Peter was the symbiote's host. (Extreme Carnage Alpha v1 #1) Coinciding with a televised broadcast of one of Krane's interviews, Carnage reached out to the Phage symbiote, corrupting it and directing it to bond to Buck Cashman, who joined the Friends of Humanity as Peter Krane's head of security. (Extreme Carnage: Phage v1 #1) Carnage also reached out to the Lasher symbiote — which had taken William, an old man with dementia, as its host — but it refused to join him. Cletus exploited William's desire to regain his memories in order to lure him to Washington, D.C., William's body perishing at some point during the days-long journey. Confronting William's codex within the Hive-Mind, Carnage thanked him for bringing Lasher to his "family" before killing him. (Extreme Carnage: Lasher v1 #1)
Carnage's attempt to corrupt the Scream symbiote was thwarted by Andi Benton, leading Carnage to dispatch Phage to assassinate her after she was arrested by Alchemax. (Extreme Carnage: Scream #1) While Phage was able to badly injure Andi, the intervention of Agent Anti-Venom led to her bonding to Silence, a new symbiote created from Scream's remains and a sample of Anti-Venom, and almost killing Phage with her cleansing touch. (Extreme Carnage: Lasher v1 #1) Corrupting the Agony and Riot symbiotes, Cletus sent Agony and its host Gemma Shin — who was complicit in his plot — to spy on Hank — who Flash had sent as a spy. (Extreme Carnage: Toxin v1 #1) Shortly before his plot commenced, Cletus contacted Gemma and Agony through the Hive-Mind to reaffirm their loyalty to the cause, revealing to Andi — who was trying to spy on them — that he knew they were coming and that it was a trap. (Extreme Carnage: Agony v1 #1) Revealing Arthur to be the Carnage symbiote's host, Cletus killed Peter Krane on public television and revealed Arthur's dark secrets to Agent Anti-Venom. Iron Man intervened wearing his Extrembiote suit, separating the Carnage symbiote from Arthur Krane, but Cletus hijacked control of the Extrembiote — causing it to break Stark's arms — and assimilated it into the Carnage symbiote, transforming it into a symbiote-dragon. Having accomplished his goals, Cletus escaped with Agony and later sent Gemma to keep an eye on Arthur Krane, who had taken his father's place as senator but was depressed without the symbiote. (Extreme Carnage Omega v1 #1)
However, despite having claimed a symbiote-dragon as his new body, Cletus seemingly decided against pursuing his plans of godhood, leading to a falling out with the Carnage symbiote that saw it expelled from the Extrembiote. (Carnage v3 #3)
Overview
Personality and attributes
After bonding with the Symbiote, he came to operate under the name of Carnage. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #361) For a time, he was believed to be referred to in prophecy in the pages of the Darkhold where he was called the Red Slayer. (Carnage v2 #4) Whilst serving Knull, he came to be known as the Prophet of the Void. (Absolute Carnage v1 #1) He was also known as the Apostle of Knull as he looked to enact his benefactors goals. (Web of Venom: Funeral Pyre v1 #1) Such was Kasady's talent for killing that he was also known as the Bleeding King. (Absolute Carnage v1 #1) In addition, he was known as the Red Messiah to those devoted to the cause of murder and death. (Absolute Carnage: Weapon Plus v1 #1)
According to him, Kasady believed that law was an illusion and that order was akin to being a TV fantasy. He instead believed that the truth of the world was that it was filled with mindless carnage. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #361)
Hate was the one thing that kept him going and the only thing that mattered to Kasady with him desiring to kill everyone. (Carnage v2 #16) He said that he killed people and loved it with him knowing nine million ways to murder a body where he loved each approach. Kasady thought of killing people when he was awake and when asleep he thought of new ways to murder people. He considered it to be pretty and an art with each death being an achievement. (Carnage: Mind Bomb v1 #1)
He claimed to remember his first death when he was born only to be revived shortly afterwards. Cletus said he remembered the act of dying and that he witnessed hell for that brief period. According to him, he stated that he vividly remembered finding himself waking up in hell in a cage. It was this feeling of being caged that psychologists believed inspired his belief that everyone was caged in life and that he was not mutilating them but rather freeing them. When he became Carnage, he saw himself as an agent of the void with life not being about black or white but rather of life and death. This inspired his belief that the universe was chaos and that god was carnage. (Web of Venom: Carnage Born v1 #1) Kasady enjoyed the idea of his deaths being witnessed by the media and inspiring them. (Carnage: Mind Bomb v1 #1)
He believed that the world was just like him and would not admit this fact. As such, he felt that the world was worthless as a result and no more than the dirt on his heels. Thus, he felt he needed to show people that chaos was the only way of the world with those embracing this becoming sane as a result. (Carnage: Mind Bomb v1 #1)
Kasady was noted for being an unrepentant mass murderer. He lacked any twisted sense of fair play that Eddie Brock had as Venom. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #361)
As a result of his insatiable bloodlust, any alliances Carnage makes tend to be short-lived at best — usually ending in him turning on his allies in order to kill them. He once formed a team of bloodthirsty supervillains to assist him in conquering Manhattan, intending to kill them once he grew bored. (Spider-Man Unlimited v1 #1)
Cletus was said to think about how he murdered his mother and father. (Carnage: Mind Bomb v1 #1) He came to believe that his mother loved their son more than him which was part of the reason he killed the animal. Kasady believed that killing someone he loved would make him happy. (Carnage v1 #3)
One of his ancestors was Cortland Kasady who had been a settler from England that came to the New World in 1664 alongside his lover, Molly Ravencroft. (Ruins of Ravencroft: Carnage v1 #1)
Despite his antisocial tendencies, Cletus was genuinely happy to have made a friend in the form of Billy Bentine. (Amazing Spider-Man Annual v1 #28)
During the time he was inverted, Cletus latched on to Alice Gleason who had been a reporter for the CVN. Such was the extent of his obsession that he fantasized about marrying and having children with her, though this was one-sided and Gleason was revolted by him. (AXIS: Carnage v1 #3)
Powers and abilities
Originally, Cletus Kasady was an ordinary human being with no special powers. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #344)
He later came to be bonded to a Symbiote spawned from Venom thus gaining superhuman abilities. Though similar to Venom, the Carnage Symbiote was also said to be quite different from its parent. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #361) It was said that there had never been a greater symbiotic bond than that held by Cletus Kasady and the Carnage Symbiote. (Extreme Carnage: Alpha v1 #1)
As noted by him, he did not need his eyes to see his opponent. This was because the 'costume' relayed information to him from its substance. It was also noted that the Carnage Symbiote had inherited a trait from Venom in that it did not trigger Spider-Man's Spider-Sense. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #361)
Carnage was able to manipulate the Symbiote matter of its body to achieve various feats. Among these included turning into slithering tendrils that could grab onto a distant target. It could also shape constructs from its own body such as making an axe that could be launched at a target. He could also shoot out razor sharp claws from his fingers as projectiles that could kill a person. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #361)
The Symbiote later managed to mutate his metabolism through a cut he gained from a fight allowing it to bond with his blood and giving Kasady the chance to regenerate Carnage if he sustained a cut. (Spider-Man Unlimited v1 #1)
One of the more unique parts of the Symbiotes abilities was to extrude into its molecular filaments and travel along communication cables. This effectively allowed him to send his Symbiote through a computer and attack a person on the other end of the cable line. (Venom: Carnage Unleashed v1 #1) He could use a symbiotic tether in order to control remotely inanimate objects allowing him to fight enemies from a distance and escape capture. (Carnage v1 #5) He later could manifest worm-like creatures from the Symbiote which entered into the brain of a person and made them extensions of Carnage’s mind. Cletus infected large number of people in this manner so that they could serve as his army where they functioned similar to zombie-like in their movements and speech. (Web of Venom: Unleashed v1 #1)
He came to head a group that was known publicly as the Church of the New Darkness that operated as a new faith but secretly were murdering people with the followers believing that the dark god Knull was coming to them. (Web of Venom: Cult of Carnage v1 #1) The Cult of Knull secretly endured into modern times where it accrued enough resources and members to form paramilitary units, research teams, and field mobile command centers. (Web of Venom: Carnage Born v1 #1)
