History
U.S. Animated
The Combaticons were originally a group of renegade Decepticons whose bodies were destroyed and their personality components were stored at the detention centre on Cybertron. They would remain there until one day when Starscream sought them out after a failed attempt at deposing Megatron. Seeking revenge, he sought to assemble a cadre of warriors that obeyed him to help him claim leadership over the Decepticons. Using a Space Bridge, he travelled to Cybertron and claimed the personality components of the renegade Decepticons. Returning to Earth, he installed them into new bodies fashioned from old Earth military vehicles left on a deserted island. Once installed, they became the Combaticons who initially looked to refuse to follow Starscream. However, Starscream revealed that he did not install any energy absorbers in the Combaticons bodies thus preventing them from refuelling. The renegade Decepticons ultimately decided to help Starscream in his plot in exchange to be fitted with the energy absorbers. Thus, a military campaign began where Starscream and the Combaticons targeted both Autobot and Decepticon forces. Under Starscream's leadership, the Combaticons managed to capture several prisoners, then used their energy absorbers to recharge themselves at a power plant. Unfortunately, Megatron and the Decepticons attacked, while the Autobots rescued their comrades. The Constructicons formed Devastator, who was quickly defeated by the Combaticons' much more powerful, but dull-witted combined form, Bruticus. Starscream ordered Bruticus to grab Megatron, forcing his former commander to acknowledge Starscream as the new leader of the Decepticons. Under duress, Megatron did so as the Stunticons watched nearby. The latter group, deciding that Starscream would be too dangerous as a leader, quickly formed Menasor and defeated Bruticus with a single attack. The Combaticons were returned to their individual parts and unconscious. Megatron then had Astrotrain placed on an asteroid to banish him and Starscream forever.
Whilst on the asteroid, the Combaticons would take their frustration out on Starscream for being trapped on the asteroid. This caused Starscream to take his chances and he flew away whilst Vortex in his shuttle form helped direct the asteroid to the nearest planet. Fortunately for them, they were on the path to Cybertron and headed to their homeworld where they intended to initiate a daring coup. Following their arrival on Cybertron, they utilized Blast Off’s shuttle mode to infiltrate the planet and quickly overpowered the Decepticon guards, eventually capturing Shockwave and seizing control of the planetary monitors. Onslaught then modified the space bridge to alter Earth's orbit, intending to hurl the planet into the sun as an act of ultimate vengeance. When Megatron and the Autobots arrived on Cybertron to stop them, the team merged into Bruticus and easily swatted aside the Decepticon forces, including the Seekers and Soundwave. The giant was only halted when Starscream revealed a hidden fail-safe—three remote-controlled spots on Bruticus's back—which Optimus Prime triggered with a direct shot, causing the combiner to malfunction and collapse. Following their defeat, the Combaticons were scheduled for execution until Megatron decided to reprogram them for total loyalty, keeping them as his personal shock troops.

Overview
In appearance, the Combaticons were a team of Decepticons whose alternate form were those of military vehicles.
The Combaticons functioned as a specialized military strike team that prioritized raw firepower and tactical coordination above all other Decepticon protocols. Led by the strategic mind of Onslaught, the unit operated with a cold, professional efficiency that allowed them to dominate both terrestrial and aerial theaters of war through the diverse alt-modes of Brawl, Swindle, Blast Off, and Vortex. Their primary role within the Decepticon ranks was that of heavy ordinance and rapid-response demolition, often serving as the vanguard during planetary invasions where they utilized their unique ability to combine into a giant behemoth form. As Combiners, the five Combaticons were able to merge into a gestalt form that took the name Bruticus. As a gestalt entity, they possessed enough physical strength to pulverize skyscrapers and enough durability to withstand direct hits from heavy artillery, making them one of the most feared combat units in the galaxy. Despite their overwhelming power, the team's greatest asset remained their ability to function as a singular, disciplined machine of destruction, though their effectiveness was occasionally hampered by internal rivalries and the erratic influence of their creator, Starscream.
