History

Origin

The first Counter-Earth was created by the High Evolutionary with the help of at least some of the Infinity Gems[1] as part of his "Project Alpha". The High Evolutionary artificially creates a Counter-Earth specifically located to hide it from "True Earth", on which he has greatly accelerated evolution and the passage of time.[2] He plans to populate it with a purified human race, but shortly after the creation of the "new Adam", Man-Beast interferes in an act of revenge and introduces a killer instinct into the new human race. Human history repeats itself (including the crucifixion of Christ), but without the benefits of superheroes (or the misfortune of supervillains[3]). So that the High Evolutionary does not have to destroy his creation, Adam Warlock descends to the new planet to save it from Man-Beast as well as humankind's violent tendencies.

Goddess

The second Counter-Earth, dubbed Paradise Omega, was created by the Goddess, using the Cosmic Egg, a collection of 30 Cosmic Cubes.[9] Unlike the other Counter-Earths, it had no animal life at all and served as the base for the Goddess' chosen heroes. Its existence was only brief; it was destroyed by Thanos telling the Cosmic Egg to self-destruct.[10]

Heroes Reborn

The third Counter-Earth was created by Franklin Richards in the transition from the Onslaught storyline to the Heroes Reborn event. As Franklin watched the Fantastic Four, Avengers and others sacrifice their lives to defeat Onslaught, he unwittingly tapped into his latent cosmic power to create a pocket universe and divert the heroes there to prevent their deaths. On the Earth of this new dimension, the heroes relived altered versions of their pasts, unaware of their previous lives in the "mainstream" Marvel Universe, where they were presumed dead.[11]

The Celestials took notice of Franklin's creation and initially demanded that he now eliminate one of the two universes, but finally relented on the condition that all beings native to Earth-616 evacuate the pocket universe and never return. The pocket universe was then placed under the authority of Ashema the Listener.[12] However, the rogue Dreaming Celestial had undermined Ashema's control, plagued the world with chaos and disaster, most notably creating floods that submerged New York City. When Doctor Doom inadvertently returned, he resolved to secure control of the world and save it from the Dreaming Celestial by transporting the planet outside of the pocket universe, relocating it to his native dimension on the opposite side of the sun from Earth-616.[13][14] Doom began referring to this world as "Planet Doom," although other observers began to use the more neutral term "Counter-Earth."

Onslaught

Return

During the War of the Realms, a monstrous shark creature bred by the High Evolutionary left Counter-Earth and sought prey to consume. Among the people it abducted by Foggy Nelson who was taken back to Counter-Earth to be consumed at a later point. In this time, the Punisher arrived looking to avenge families killed by various creatures that came to Earth in the war. He came to find Foggy and saved his life by killing the shark monster whereupon he took the attorney with him as Castle sought to continue his next mission across space. (Punisher Kill Krew v1 #2)

Overview

One of the creatures that inhabited the world were the Green Ones that were entities made of wood and formed from the planet itself. They were created for the task of purging the world of life and reclaiming it back into the soil to restore the ecosystem. This they accomplished by contact whereupon they turned living organisms into more of their kind. The High Evolutionary made use of them when he sought to purge Counter-Earth of his creations with the Green Ones cleaning the landscape of life to allow for new life to settle on the surface. • It was based on the hypothetical concept of a duplicate version of Earth located in the solar system.

In other media

Television

  • In Spider-Man Unlimited, Counter-Earth served as the primary setting within the cartoon series. It was shown to had existed for thousands of years where it followed a similar pattern of development as regular Earth. Long ago, the world was similarly developed Dinosaurs that dominated its surface until a meteorite arrived that transported the parasitic Symbiotes to it. Once there, the Symbiotes infested the Dinosaurs and bringing all creatures under the unity of the hive min known as the Synoptic. However, a meteor would crash that caused the extinction of the Dinosaurs and forced the Symbiotes deep underground where they awaited and called on others of their kind to help them take over Earth once more with mankind developing in the aftermath. Around 50 years ago, the being known as the High Evolutionary became disgusted with mankind on the regular Earth and departed for a new utopia on Counter-Earth. Humanity on Counter-Earth, however, was engaged in infighting and violence which forced the High Evolutionary to decide to create his utopia instead. After many years of experiments, he developed hybrid animal beings who he called Beastials that became the dominant race on the planet whilst mankind was relegated to second class citizens who was tagged for tracking. Under the High Evolutionary's rule, the Beastials dominated Counter-Earth where the Knights of Wundagore enforced his will whilst the Machine Men brought order to this society. The main Earth by the modern day discovered the existence of Counter-Earth with astronaut John Jameson launching to explore it on Solarus-1 but he was brought down and tagged but released by the Human Revolution where he became their leader. Spider-Man would go onboard Solarus-2 to bring back John Jameson but was followed by Venom and Carnage who were responding to the call of the Synoptic to free it. Similar to Jameson, Solarus-2 was shot down forcing Spider-Man to remain trapped on Counter-Earth where he fought against the High Evolutionary's rule whilst trying to find a way back home.
