History

The Cube was built as a prison for irradiated supervillains. The location of the Cube is unknown as only high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents know of its existence. Its "villain rehabilitation program" brainwashes the inmates to serve S.H.I.E.L.D.[1]

Whilst in the Cube, Noh-Varr was approached by the Illuminati who offered him freedom by becoming a hero where they told him stories of Captain Mar-Vell. However, they told him that he had to earn his freedom and that part of this involved abandoning his quest of revenge against Earth. (New Avengers: Illuminati v2 #4)

During the Civil War, the Warden was assigned a mission by Maria Hill to apprehend the Young Avengers and Runaways. This saw him use the mind-controlled Noh-Varr to capture the young superheroes and bring them to the Cube. (Civil War: Young Avengers and Runaways v1 #2) The Kree warrior managed to overpower the heroes leading to the capture of Hulkling, Xavin, Karolina Dean and Wiccan leading to the Warden having Noh-Varr retrieved. (Civil War: Young Avengers and Runaways v1 #3) Their comrades later attacked the Cube to recover their friends leading to Noh-Varr being dispatched to fight them only for him to be defeated in the brief fight. Vision II then reversed the Cube's mental control over Noh-Varr after which the young superheroes departed. In the aftermath, Noh-Varr took control of the Warden and the prison whereupon he declared the capital city of the new Kree Empire. (Civil War: Young Avengers and Runaways v1 #4)

The Skrulls later began their invasion of Earth where they unleashed an engineered virus to shutdown technology around the planet. Among the sites hit were the Cube leading to a prison riot whereupon Noh-Varr decided that it was time to depart. (Secret Invasion v1 #1)

During the "Dark Reign" storyline, Norman Osborn takes over the Cube and uses it as a base for his Thunderbolts team.[7]

Overview

It was classified as an infinite security facility with escape being deemed virtually impossible. Prisoners were kept contained within the cluster of holding cells that were largely underground. (Civil War: Young Avengers and Runaways v1 #4)

The Cube's system was based on the U.S. governments computer systems. (Civil War: Young Avengers and Runaways v1 #4)

The facility tended to use some of its own prisoners as mobile defense units that were under mind control to protect it from attack. (Civil War: Young Avengers and Runaways v1 #4)

Alternate Versions

In other media

Television

  • In Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Cube makes an appearance in the pilot episode as one of a number of prisons maintained by S.H.I.E.L.D. It was used to house a number of Hulk's villains until Loki broke all the supervillains out from their prisons. At the Cube, the Leader took charge where he rigged a machine to later create a wave of gamma energy. His goal was transforming a large section of the world into a gamma irradiated land turning everyone into Hulk-like monsters. The Avengers responded where they entered the Cube and despite each of their gamma shielding devices they were each turned into a Hulk when those systems were destroyed. They were ultimately able to stop the gamma generator thus ending the plot only for the Leader to begin his plan elsewhere.
  • In Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Cube is referenced in the episode "Providence" where it was mentioned as one of the facilities cleared of HYDRA influence following the attempt to take control of S.H.I.E.L.D.
