History
Pre-Crisis
Earth-S was one of the "infinite Earths," home of the Marvel Family and their allies. During the Crisis on Infinite Earths, it was temporarily stored in the netherverse created by the Monitor's death, then covered in ice and conquered by an army of super-villains.
In prehistoric times, King Kull came to be the ruler of a race of protohumans known as the Submen, a race which ruled the Homo Sapiens until eventually overthrown in a revolt. Kull himself came to survive by going into a state of suspended animation. (Captain Marvel Adventures v1 #125)
Around 25,000 years ago, an island nation known as Tallantis came to be ruled by an oppressive King named Zool until a time travelling Marvel Family defeated him and forced him to emancipate his numerous slaves, lest he be destroyed by volcanoes in a slave rebellion. Some time during the Ice Age, this entire Tallantean society died out. Over time, this led to the misconception of the existence of an Atlantis whilst the land mass came to be known as Australia by the modern day. (The Marvel Family v1 #39)
In 7000 BC, a Canaanite youngster was bestowed with the powers of six Canaanite gods (Marzosh, Arel, Ribalvei, Voldar, Elbiam and Lumium) and became known as Champion. When Evil, the most terrible of gods, appeared, he was able to divide into three forms named Terror, Sin and Wickedness. The Gods sent a Champion into the future, to seek the help of the Champion's successor, Captain Marvel. Together, they defeated Evil and its servants, the Seven Deadly Enemies of Man. Champion and Captain Marvel imprisoned Evil and, in the process, they created the Rock of Eternity. (World's Finest v1 #262) For 3,000 years, as the Champion aged, the gods he knew were forgotten by everyone except himself, and he became a great wizard, taking the name Shazamo. The Egyptian prince named Teth-Adam was chosen by Shazam as his successor, and received the powers of six Egyptian Gods namely Shu, Hershef, Amon, Zehuti, Anpu and Menthu. As Black Adam, he became corrupted by power lust and was banished to the farthest star by the wizard. (Captain Marvel Adventures v1 #61)
During the 12th dynasty, an evil pharaoh, deceived by the false priest Mesu, abandoned the worship of Osiris and the benevolent gods, and instead served Set. When Prince Amentep criticized him, he was thrown into prison, receiving from his uncle the Ibistick and becoming Ibis the Invincible. In rebellion against the tyrannical Mesu who came to be known as the Black Pharaoh had Taia, the wife of Ibis, struck by an arrow. Ibis put her and himself in suspended animation. (Whiz Comics v1 #2)
A generation later, an evil wizard named Serpenotep conquered the Land of the Nile, imprisoning the benevolent witch who in those days protected the people. Serpenotep ruled tyrannically until the original Isis, posing as a servant, sneaked past the guards and entered the sorcerer's prison. The magician explained that even she would not be able to free him, until Serpenotep was defeated, but that he was able to transfer part of his power to those who were worthy. Using his magic, he caused an amulet necklace to appear around her neck, as well as a tiara on her head. He told her that she now possessed the powers of the pyramid - she could fly like the hawk, run with the speed of the gazelles, and command the elements of earth and sky. Isis and the magician combined their power and transformed Serpenotep into stone. For years afterward, Isis protected the needy, until she finally died. She foresaw that she would return again, in another form, to combat evil. (Isis v1 #7)
Queen Hapshuset (Hatshepsut) ruled as the first and only female pharaoh of Egypt. Thanks to his powerful magic, old Shazamo still lived, and served as her royal sorcerer. He presented the Queen with the mystical amulet of Isis, and told Hapshuset that she and her descendants would be endowed by the goddess Isis with great powers. By wearing the amulet and invoking the goddess' name, Hapshuset was transformed into an avatar of Isis. After her death, the sorcerer took the amulet and hid it, along with a parchment explaining the secrets of Isis. He cast a spell, designed to draw one of the queen's worthy descendants to the place, so that the power of Isis could be rediscovered in some future age. (Isis v1 #7)
Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, the Multiverse was destroyed and merged into a single reality with many of the elements of Earth-S being incorporated into the mainstream Earth.
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Notes
- Earth-S was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck where it made its first appearance in Whiz Comics v1 #2 (February, 1940).
- In an interview on Newsarama, editor Dan DiDio commented that characters from the Prime Earth appeared in Earth-5, "Such is the case with Green Lantern of Earth-5, which used to be Earth-S – the Shazam universe. So rather than seeing what we’ve come to think of as the traditional hero of that world, we’re going to see someone who’s new to that world."
- After the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Earth-S merged with elements of all the remaining worlds (Earth-1, Earth-2, Earth-4, and Earth-X) to form the new post-Crisis Earth (dubbed "Earth-Sigma" by some). Other Earth-S-derived hypertimelines may also remain throughout hypertime.)
- In Detective Comics v1 #500 (1981), a pre-Crisis version of Earth-Five reality was a world with no superheroes.
