Earth is a planet that features in Star Trek.

History

Earth

Around 4.5 billion years ago, ancient humanoids seeded many worlds in the Milky Way Galaxy, including Earth, with a DNA code to guide evolution to a form resembling their own. (TNG: The Chase) Approximately 3.5 billion years ago, the first life on Earth was formed from a group of amino acids that combined to form the first proteins. (TNG: All Good Things...) One theory by human scientists in the future was that Earth's lifeforms originated from Mars. They believed that life was carried from one world to another on rocks blasted off into space by comet or asteroid impacts with this school of thought being known as lithopanspermia. (PIC: Two of One) Over four hundred million years ago, in the Devonian period, the genus Eryops was the last common ancestor of both warm-blooded and cold-blooded lifeforms. (VOY: Distant Origin)

Approximately 35 thousand years ago, multiple species of humanoids were known to had co-existed on Earth with two of these being modern Humans and Neanderthals. However, the Neanderthals became extinct around 28,000 years ago with this being a fortunate outcome for humanity. (ENT: Dear Doctor)

Another early Human civilization was that of the Chinese, who under the first Qin emperor built the Great Wall of China during the 3rd century BC. (VOY: 11:59)

In the 17th century, scientist Galileo Galilei taught the masses that Earth moved around the sun and not the opposite way. For these teachings, he was tried and convicted of heresy by an inquisition of the Roman Catholic Church, and his books were burned. (DS9: In the Hands of the Prophets)

During the Europa Mission, Renée Picard came to discover a microorganism on Io that she believed was sentient and she convinced the mission commander to bring it back to Earth. (PIC: Fly Me to the Moon)

In 2026, World War 3 fully broke out which caused the eradication of 600,000 animal and plant species and 30% of Earth's human population. The war decimated Earth causing nuclear winters, the destruction of most of Earth's major cities and natural climate. Radio Isotopes from nuclear weapons were ejected into the atmosphere exposing all life remaining after the war to dangerous radiation. (SNW: Strange New Worlds)

In the Dominion War, the Breen Confederacy came to launch a surprise attack Earth where they targeted Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco. (DS9: The Changing Face of Evil)

After the Burn, every starship capable of warp and possessing dilithium simultaneously exploded in an event that caused the death of millions. This caused the slowly and systematic collapse of space travel along with the Federation with the cause of the event being unknown. Fearing a possible attack, it was decided to move Starfleet Headquarters away from Earth as it made the planet a potential target to enemies with this having occurred around a century ago. Thus, the planet no longer came to host Starfleet and in time formed its own government separate from the fallen Federation with the United Earth Defense Force developing as its military defensive arm. Despite this being the case, a Starfleet Admiral named Tala sent a secure coded Starfleet beacon that asked for any vessel to rendezvous at Earth though the loss of interstellar travel meant that no ship was able to make the journey. One division within the United Earth military was the Military Assault Command Operation (MACO). They were a separate branch of the Earth Starfleet with them by the year 2153 having tactics and technology that were two to three years more advanced than those of Starfleet, but their combat expertise was initially limited to simulations conducted on Earth. By the 32nd century, the planet had developed its own military force known as the United Earth Defense Force. (DIS: People of Earth)

Alternate Versions

• In Star Trek: Enterprise, an alternate version of Earth known as Terra existed within the Mirror Universe. It was inhabited by a war-like humanity referred to as Terrans who killed the Vulcan First Contact team and plundered their technology to form the Terran Empire.
• In Star Trek: The Next Generation, an anti-time eruption created an alternate past for Earth where where 3.5 billion years ago amino acids never combined with the first proteins, and life never formed on the planet. This was how the Q Continuum fulfilled its judgment to deny Humans existence.
• In Star Trek: Picard, an alternate version of Earth was shown to exist in the Q altered timeline. Following the failure of the Europa Mission, the planet's ecosystem fell into decline and saw the emergence of a xenophobic humanity who formed the Confederation of Earth that would exterminate other alien races.
