History

The Terran Empire was an interstellar government centred around Earth and consisted of an alternate reality version of humanity that resided in the Mirror Universe. Millennia ago, Terrans were said to had believed in concepts such as freedom, equality and cooperation but eventually came to abandon these ideals as they found them to be destructive delusions that bred rebellion. (DIS: Vaulting Ambition) The Terran Empire was said to had existed for centuries on the planet Earth by the year 2155. (ENT: In a Mirror, Darkly) One of its earliest conquests when expanding into space was the Moon of Luna. (ENT: In a Mirror, Darkly) The Terran's first contact with a alien species in the Mirror Universe began in the 21st century following their development of warp technology by Zefram Cochrane. The warp signature drew the attention of the Vulcans who landed in Bozeman, Montana to make contact with humanity. However, the Terrans instead killed the first contact crew and ransacked their vessel to pillage it of its technology. The encounter with the Vulcans was deemed by the Terrans as being the prelude to an invasion and thus they prepared for the conquest of Vulcan. In response, the Vulcans gradually released their technology to Earth over time and the Terran Empire applied it as part of a policy of aggressive interstellar expansion. By the 2150s, the Terran Empire had already conquered the Vulcans, Denobulans, Andorians, Aenars, Orions, and Tellarites whilst launching attacks against the Klingons, Rigelians, and Xindi. (ENT: In a Mirror, Darkly)

At some point, the empire expanded to conquer the planet Bajor with the Bajorans falling under the control of the Terran forces who occupied the world for decades. (DS9: Crossover)

The encounter had a profound influence over this Spock who afterwards rose through the ranks to become Commander-in-Chief of the Terran Empire. Once in this position, he began to preach a series of reforms whereupon he sought disarmament and peace. He succeeded in these reforms, the empire was noted to had no longer been in a position to defend itself from external threats. By this point, the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance had formed which decided to strike against the Terran Empire. (DS9: Crossover)

Overview

In appearance, the Terran Empire was an interstellar nation that was created by Terrans of their universe. (TOS: Mirror, Mirror)

Terrans were sensitive to light when compared to humans from the prime universe with this being one of the few biological differences between the two species with the other being the different quantum signature. (DIS: Vaulting Ambition)

In the past, it was noted that the Terrans had once believed in concepts of equality, freedom and cooperation. However, these were seen as destructive ideals which they shed long ago but had still fuelled rebellions. (DIS: Vaulting Ambition) Terrans were said to not believe in the concept of having souls. (DS9: Crossover)

As an oppressive regime, it was also known for being fearful. (DIS: The Wolf Inside) It was described as being a fascistic human-only organization. They were described as being a oppressive, racist and xenophobic culture that dominated all space. Terran culture was said to be predicated upon the unconditional hatred and rejection of anything as well as everything that was other than them. Terrans were said to never apologise as to do so showed weakness with acts of decency leading to a persons death. To Terrans, their strength was born out of pure necessity as they lived in constant fear and always watched for a knife aimed at their back. (DIS: Despite Yourself) It was claimed that the only motivation Terrans had for any given action was revenge. (DIS: Die Trying) Under their hierarchy, the death of a superior allowed junior officers to move up the ranks. This was achieved through assassination and was not questioned in cases where prime orders of the Empire were disobeyed. (TOS: Mirror, Mirror)

Other races were treated as second-class citizen within the Empire with Vulcans shown as being influential within their government. (ENT: In a Mirror, Darkly)

Leadership of the empire was held by a position of Emperor with the figure being faceless to the masses. (DIS: Despite Yourself) The Emperor frequently travelled across space in their massive palace ship that contained their advisors and the members of the Imperial court. (DIS: Vaulting Ambition) Supporting the Emperor were the various Lords of the Empire. (DIS: Vaulting Ambition) In an attempted coup, a usurper could only make their claim legitimate to the throne if they executed the former Emperor. (DIS: What's Past Is Prologue) It was claimed that an emperor's victims became their servants in the afterlife. (DIS: Terra Firma, Part 1) The emperor's personal physicians were said to be buried with them when they died with this practice incentivising loyalty. (DIS: The Sanctuary)

One of the agencies of the empire was Imperial Intelligence that was responsible for data gathering. (DIS: The Wolf Inside)

They were noted for being barbarians but had a strong empire. (DS9: Crossover) The Terran Empire held the belief that terror must be maintained to ensure its dominion otherwise they were doomed. Command procedure dictated that any force that refused the Empire were to be made an example as dictated by custom. (TOS: Mirror, Mirror) Terran General Order Four stated that, "Any exotic species deemed a threat to the Imperial supremacy will be extinguished without prejudice". (DIS: The Wolf Inside) Terrans were noted for being an egotistical people who were short-sighted enough to forcibly take resources to the point of it stripping any capacity of self-sustaining system. (DIS: What's Past Is Prologue)

Torture was seen as a common means of interrogation and a means of enforcing discipline. (TOS: Mirror, Mirror) The fate of traitors could see them being transported into space to die. (DIS: The Wolf Inside)

Rebels consisted of non-human races that were oppressed by the empire. (DIS: Despite Yourself)

Technology

Their ships were noted to hold impenetrable firewalls that prevented remote access to their computer systems. (DIS: The Wolf Inside) The existence of the U.S.S. Defiant was a closely guarded secret in the Empire with records in the archives being redacted and Terrans being executed if they were not authorised for being aware of the ship. Notes

  • In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion, writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe decided to based the Terran Empire on the historical Roman Empire and gave them formidable enemies, "Empires aren't usually brutal unless there's a reason. There are usually external or internal pressures that cause them to be that way," he commented. "So I just thought that if the parallel Earth was that brutal, there had to be a reason. And the reason was that the barbarians (the Klingons and the Cardassians) were at the gate."
