Biography

Origin

Fabian Cortez was a male Mutant born in the modern age where he came from royalty. (Stryfe's Strike File v1 #1) He and his sisters forefathers were descended from ancient European nobility but their status as Mutants saw them being denied much of the family's financial wealth. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #5) At some point, he was among a group of Mutants that intended to seek out Magneto and gain his benediction. To that end, they attacked a S.H.I.E.L.D. launch facility and stole a shuttle craft in order to go into orbit to find Asteroid M. Their vessel was pursued by Major Harry Delgado and his S.H.I.E.L.D. team where they reached Magneto's secluded headquarters. Upon their approach, their ships were destroyed by Magneto who was irritated that his self-imposed exile was being disturbed by the intruders. He intended to send them all back to Earth's surface with a warning which was when Anne-Marie begged an audience on behalf of her fellow Mutants. At that time, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in pursuit attacked the Mutants where they used inhibitor fields against them with Anne-Marie being shot in the back. This angered Magneto lashed out at the humans where he killed Deke and ended the threat from the humans. Cortez then presented himself before Magneto where they claimed to be his Acolytes and urged him to end his exile in order to retake the cause of Mutantkind. (X-Men v2 #1)

Acolyte

House of X

After the establishment of the nation of Krakoa, he was one of many Mutants that came to reside on the living island that was the home of their people. During this time, the country helped re-form S.W.O.R.D. and funded its operations along with providing Mutants to help man its space station. This saw Cortez stationed at the Peak where he served as one of the Mutants under Director Abigail Brand's command where he served as the Power. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #1) S.W.O.R.D. then responded to the attack on Earth by Knull, the God of Symbiotes who had engulfed the entire planet with the creatures. Brand deployed a strike team to travel to Krakoa via a gateway with Cortez among the Mutants journeying on the mission. They came to see Sunfire injured fighting one of the Symbiote Dragons but Cortez used his abilities to supercharge Shiro to allow him to continue the fight. His actions got the notice of Magneto who praised Cortez for his actions with Fabian requesting that he be allowed to address the Quiet Council of Krakoa on a matter of national policy. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #2)

After his death, he was resurrected by the Resurrection Protocols and was allowed a meeting with the Quiet Council as he had requested to make a case to them. Before them, he asked them to amend the law against murdering humans but was denied. He then asked for special dispensation as he believed he was vital to the Mutant space program and could not be replaced. It was then that he was found that the Quiet Council had found a replacement for him in Khora of the Burning Heart who was an inhabitant of Arakko. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #5)

He later decided on his own way of getting his retaliation against humans. This involved taking the newly resurrected Gorgon to New York City. Tomi's recent death had led to his return by the Resurrection Protocols but something interfered with the process causing his mind to become more child-like. In that state, Cortez boosted his telepathy whilst he was in close proximity to humans causing him to be overwhelmed by their negative thoughts. The intention was for Gorgon to be overloaded by negative feelings that he would rip off his blindfold and unintentionally use his powers to petrify the crowd. This would cause numerous human deaths whilst no blame would fall on Cortez as he did not personally break Krakoa's laws with the punishment being given to Gorgon. Nightcrawler came to learn of this and intervened where he engaged in comedic antics that caused the human crowd to laugh. This calmed Gorgon and prevented him from going out of control whereupon Kurt Wagner took Cortez away from the scene. Fearing the Quiet Council being informed, Fabian begged for Nightcrawler to not tell them but he found that he was being taken to Mars that had recently been terraformed to be planet Arakko'. (Way of X v1 #4)

Personality and attributes

At one point, he came to be known as the Power within the Krakoan hierarchy in S.W.O.R.D. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #1) However, he denied having a code name or Mutant name where instead he claimed his actual name of Cortez that he claimed was his Mutant name. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #5)
