Biography

During the fight, he could smell the meth in the lab of his dealer Raymond and decided to follow the scent after shaking off Spider-Man. He arrived at the scene to kill the dealer whereupon he began to consume the meth. Unknown to him, the Wall-Crawler had pursued him leading to another fight between the two as the Freak intended to make Spider-Man as ugly as himself. During their fight, some of the equipment was knocked starting a fire that destroyed the drugs with the Freak desperate to ingest the white despite Spider-Man's warnings of the rampaging fire that had consumed the building. The Freak was engulfed in flames and seemingly died in the buildings collapse but unknown to anyone his body created a new cocoon over himself that saved him and put his form through another transformation though his emergence from this state was delayed due to a blizzard that slowed his mutation. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #554)

Freak was caught under the flaming debris, but survived and created a new chrysalis, which made him fireproof and even stronger. Freak emerged as an armadillo-like creature, and again tried to kill Spider-Man. When Connors arrived with the quicklime necessary to incapacitate Freak, Spider-Man tricked him into thinking Connors had drugs. Freak tore open the bags and was covered in the quicklime. He again formed a chrysalis, with Spider-Man pouring quicklime over it, to permanently incapacitate him. The chrysalis was taken by a hazmat crew, which was later revealed to be an Oscorp research group. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #558)

Freak was next seen cut open and hooked up to machines in an Oscorp lab where scientists were using his unique abilities to cure various diseases. Norman Osborn injected him with a sample of the Anti-Venom antibodies to create 'super-venom', a virus capable of killing millions with a single drop. He then used the super-venom to re-power Mac Gargan who was 'cured' of his symbiote by Anti-Venom. Norman also mentioned that Freak was now incapable of becoming high now because his body adapted to his drug addiction by removing the pleasure center of his brain. In the confrontation between Spider-Man and Osborn, Osborn activated the building's self-destruction, with Freak still inside. A search afterwards by Oscorp found 'no signs of life', which made the team reason that Freak was killed, with Osborn immediately retorting 'Idiot. Think about it for a second'. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #572)

Later on, the Freak was revealed to had indeed survived where he came to be one of many villains that participated in the bounty set by Doctor Octopus on Lily Hollister's newborn infant. At the time, Spider-Man was involved in protection of the child and he was being hounded by the new Vulture Jimmy Natale. The Freak came to crash into them where he and the Vulture battled one another over the Osborn child which allowed Spider-Man to escape with his charge. However, the Freak and the Vulture came to an understanding where they decided to work together against their mutual enemy to achieve their shared goal. At this point, the Rhino had arrived at the scene to chase after the child as well. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #644) Afterwards, Spider-Man went on a rampage against the supervillains when the Chameleon managed to kidnap the infant. This resulted in him battling a number of his villains including the Freak who was defeated. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #645)

In the aftermath, the Freak came to be imprisoned at Ravencroft Institute until the Cult of Carnage took over the prison and freed him along with Will o' the Wisp and Conundrum who came to be infected with Symbiotes. The three supervillains were then dispatched by Cletus Kasady to hunt down Deadpool in order to claim his spine and pieces of the codices that resided in him as he was a former Symbiote host. (Absolute Carnage vs. Deadpool v1 #2) Despite the grievous injury, he was not killed and instead he was kept in a containment tank whilst his body recovered. During this time, he was placed within the rebuilt Ravencroft Institute where he attended sessions fielded by Misty Knight to help treat the villains within the prison. (Ravencroft v1 #1)

Overview

Personality and attributes

A unique aspect of his appearance was the genetic condition that led to one of his eyes being blue and the other brown. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #554)

As a result, he blamed Spider-Man for his transformation into a monster and wanted revenge on him. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #553) According to the Freak, he intended to make the Wall-Crawler as ugly as himself. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #554)

As a junkie, he had a desire to find more drugs in order to get high. This made it easy to manipulate him and lead him into a trap. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #558)

Powers and abilities

The serums contained a mixture of stem cells from various animals, amphibians and insects with these mixing with the drugs present in his body bringing about a mutation. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #554)

He developed a fine sense of smell allowing him to track targets even over distances. This allowed him to determine Spider-Man was in a crowd but was unaware of his civilian identity. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #553)

With his claws, he was able to climb walls allowing him to scale buildings. His strength allowed him to strike with a powerful backhand that could knock back superhuman foes such as Spider-Man. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #554)

A result of caterpillar DNA present in the serum he ingested meant that he was able to spin a cocoon around his body to undergo a genetic mutation. The chrysalis was acidic during transformation that protected him from attacks with the Freak being in this state for a period of 24 hours though the amphibian and insect DNA meant that cold environments could extend the time in the cocoon. In another case, after being caught in a fire in a collapsing building his body weaved a new cocoon over himself that made him go through another transformation. Every time he faced death then he returned to the original chrysalis state whereupon his body learnt the prior experience. As a result, he evolved mutations to handle such attacks in the future. After his initial death, his body re-emerged to become bulletproof and upon his second death it was expected he would become fire proof along with becoming even stronger than before. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #554)

Any foreign substance introduced into his body saw the development of a biological countermeasure. In some cases, it could even develop super-toxins that could be used to kill superhuman beings. In fact, it was estimated that one such toxin was capable of killing a thousand ordinary people. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #572)

It was said that the Freak could not be killed and any attempt to do so simply returned him to a chrysalis state. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #558) Studies had shown that every time he died that his body removed a weakness in him. Among these included his dependency on drugs which was removed by removing the pleasure centres in Freak's brain. As a result, he could never get high again due to his body. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #572)
