Biography
Origin
Gajeel Redfox (Japanese: ガジル・レッドフォックス, Hepburn: Gajiru Reddofokkusu) was a male human born in the Earthlands around 400 years ago. He lived during a time when Dragons had preyed on humanity and to combat the large beasts there was the rise of Dragon Slayers that utilised the creatures magic against them. However, this saw one of the Dragon Slayers transform into one of the creatures where he became the Black Dragon Acnologia that started killing the rest of the Dragons and terrorised the lands. Around this time, Gajeel was one of many orphans where he along with four others were chosen to be Dragon Slayers by Dragons that cared for them. The five were to be part of a plot to defeat Acnologia and the Dragons bonded their souls to their charges who were dispatched 400 years into the future via the Eclipse Gate in a time when ethernano was rich in the world. They five were then to be trained to adulthood and work together to defeat Acnologia who had survived in hibernation over the centuries. However, upon arriving into the modern age, an incident occurred that separated the Dragon Slayers from one another where they each were raised independently and they came to forget their origins. Gajeel was among their number where he came to make a life for himself in the world and grew to adulthood. By this point, he came to join a magic guild with this being the Phantom Lords that were led by Jose Porla. During this time, it was noted that he came to be admired for his strength by a young man named Ryos. After an altercation, he was brought before the Magic Council once again for punishment with Gajeel not caring about his behaviour. Following the meeting, council member Belno met with him where she pleaded for him to abandon the Phantom Lords guild stating that he could have a better life. However, Redfox scoffed at her efforts and brushed her comments aside where he proudly stated that his guild were going to target Fairy Tail next. Despite his attitude, Belno kept faith that there was a good man beneath Gajeel's rough exterior and kept faith in him.
Afterwards, the Phantom Lords guildmaster had decided on conducing a surprise attack against Fairy Tail. Gajeel came to lead the initial strike against Fairy Tail where he engaged guerrilla attacks against the guild. This included striking at their Guildhall where he destroyed its foundation using large iron pillars that damaged the structure. He also attacked Fairy Tail's Team Shadow Gear and decided to make an example out of them as a show of strength. For this, he came to pin all three members of the team on a tree where he inscribing the mark of Phantom Lord on their torso as a show of who had committed the act. The attack resulted in a formal declaration of war between Fairy Tail and Phantom Lord. Redfox came to survey the battles fought before deciding to intervene by fighting Elfman Strauss. Their fight though was interrupted by the arrival of Natsu Dragneel though Gajeel was excited at the idea of fighting another Dragon Slayer. Despite exchanging blows, Natsu was forced to retreat alongside the rest of his guild mates after Fairy Tail guildmaster Makarov Dreyar's magic was dissipated by Aria. Gajeel uses his superior sense of smell to track down Lucy Heartfilia, whom he captures and brings back to his guild after the Element 4 are defeated. He is ordered by Jose to watch Lucy, but Gajeel cruelly tortures her out of boredom and misplaced hatred. As Lucy insults Gajeel, he smells Natsu coming and moves to kill Lucy, provoking Natsu into fighting him once more. The two are initially equal in strength, but Gajeel gains the upper hand by covering his body with metal scales and eating scraps of metal to replenish his strength. However, Natsu is able to retaliate after Lucy summons Sagittarius to start a fire allowing Natsu to feed. This gives him enough strength to defeat Gajeel by blasting him through the Phantom Lord building, demolishing it in the process. After the battle ends, Natsu questions Gajeel about where he learned his Dragon Slayer Magic. Gajeel reveals his relationship with Metalicana, and is shocked to learn that Natsu's Dragon parent, Igneel, disappeared on the same day as his own. The two then bicker over this, and stop after Gajeel yells at Natsu to get out of what is left of his guild, declaring that he will one day take revenge. Sometime later, Phantom Lord is disbanded, and Gajeel remains at the ruins of his former guild. He is eventually approached by Makarov, who tells him that Juvia Lockser, another former member of Phantom Lord, has joined their guild, much to Gajeel's displeasure. Makarov forgives Gajeel for damaging his guild, but he is still visibly enraged that Gajeel had injured Shadow Gear, making it clear that he would never forgive him for it. Makarov then offers Gajeel membership into Fairy Tail to help guide him down the right path. Moved by Makarov's mercy and compassion, Gajeel accepts his offer.
Fairy Tail
Despite not being a fully trusted member of Fairy Tail, Gajeel was given a mission by Makarov to find Ivan Dreyar, Makarov's son and Master of the Dark Guild Raven Tail, infiltrate his Dark Guild, and spy on him in the process. Gajeel manages to make contact with Ivan and feigns allegiance with him, claiming to be spying on Fairy Tail so that he may take revenge against Natsu.
Afterwards, he decided to enlist his services to the new Magic Council with Gajeel became the head of the Custody Enforcement Unit. He along with Panther Lily and Levy then operated on missions to hunt down the black magic cultists of the organization known as Avatar.
Though the threat of Zeref was gone, Acnologia had managed to attain ultimate power whilst within a time rift. With this power, he transported all the Dragon Slayers into this realm in order to tap into their power and eliminate them. This saw Gajeel being teleported away against his will alongside Laxus as they emerged within the time rift.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Gajeel Redfox was a tall intimidating muscular young man whose hair was heavy metal long black hair and his eyes were small and red with crimson irises along with slitted dark pupils. On his right arm, he was shown to hold three scars on it. He was also known by the name of the Black Steel (黒鉄 Kurogane).
During his time in Phantom Lord, he was not above torturing captives out of boredom and misplaced hatred.
Initially, he would be frustrated at always being last and thought it was pathetic of him. However, he later did not seem to care about that so long as he could protect the girl he loved.
Gajeel had said that he imagined a future with Levy where the two would have children together. He came to admit this when he thought he was sacrificing his life to kill Bloodman. When he survived, he was shown to be somewhat embarrassed at his confession.
Powers and abilities
Gajeel Redfox was a human who came to be trained as a warrior by adulthood. It was shown that he had an impressive durability and level of endurance. Redfox was shown to strike a person with sufficient force into a wall where t could crack it. In addition, he was able to survive blows that would normally knock out another person. He was proficient in an unarmed combat where his style as a brutal one that consisted of powerful direct moves such as punches and headbutts. His sheer physical strength made his blows highly damaging which when combined with his speed allowed him to land multiple quick strikes in quick succession. This could be made even more deadly when he began to employ his Iron Dragon Scales. In one instance, he used his metal scales to fight a mechanical dragon and absorbed extremely powerful blows with little trouble.
As a youth, he showed a talent for using Magic (魔法 Mahō) which allowed him to become a Mage (魔導士 Madōshi). As a child, he was placed under the tutelage of the Iron Dragon Metalicana where he cam to be taught the art of Iron Dragon Slayer Magic. This led to him gaining a number of traits common with Dragon Slayers namely an improved sense of smell and hearing. However, he also suffered from the common weakness among their kind which was motion weakness.
It was shown that he extensively employed unarmed combat and possessed great proficiency in it. He was noted for his immense strength and skill where initially he proved to be the strongest member of Phantom Lords. This led to him being classed as an S-Class Mage (Ｓ級魔導士 Esu-kyū Madōshi) in the guild.
As a Dragon Slayer, he learnt the art of the Iron Dragon Slayer Magic (鉄の滅竜魔法 Tetsu no Metsuryū Mahō) from the Dragon Metallicana. Among the spells he knew included:
- Iron Dragon's Roar' (鉄竜の咆哮 Tetsuryū no Hōkō) : the Dragon Roar was utilised when he gathered magic power within his mouth and unleashed a powerful tornado at his enemies with the strength of the attack being so immense that it was able to generate powerful explosions with it also leading to heavy blunt damage at a target. This attack also unleashed sharp shards of metal in the process that could see an enemy's body being shredded in the process.
- Iron Dragon's Lance (鉄竜槍 Tetsuryūsō) : allowed him to transform his arms into long iron poles that he could whip around him in a circular motion to clear the field of enemies or other targets around him. A variation of this power was Iron Dragon's Lance: Demon Logs (鉄竜槍 鬼薪 Tetsuryūsō: Kishin) whereby he turned his arm into a large spearhead, from which a large number of steel spears were fired towards his target in rapid succession.
- Iron Dragon's Scales (鉄龍の鱗 Tetsuryū no Uroko) : this spell allowed Gajeel to cover either a part or his entire body in steel scales thus increasing his offensive as well as defensive abilities. Strikes in this form generated powerful gusts of wind through kinetic force alone that were able to shatter bones and rock whilst being resilient against regular flames. Redfox was able to use these scales to protect him from deadly environmental attacks such as the bane particles from Etherious demons.
- Karma Demon: Iron God Sword (業魔・鉄神剣 Gōma Tetsu Jin Ken) :
- Karma Demon: Iron Spiral (業魔・鉄螺旋 Gōma Tetsurasen) :
After consuming Rogue Cheney's shadows, he gained the ability to create a hybrid form known as Iron Shadow Dragon Mode (モード鉄影竜 Mōdo Tetsueiryū) which made it possible for him to wield Shadow Dragon Magic that enhanced his regular attacks.
Similar to other Dragon Slayers, he could attain the Dragon Force (竜の力ドラゴンフォース Doragon Fōsu) that was a state which could be entered after ingesting large amounts of Magical Barrier Particles.
