Nicholai Ginovaef of Moscow, Russia was a sergeant in the UBCS Delta Platoon B Squad. He was an extremely cold and secretive individual, formerly an assassin for Spetsnaz. He was part of the same platoon as Carlos Oliveria and Mikhail Victor, and when the latter was severely injured he took command of the trio, ostensibly to get them to the safety of the St. Michael Church, which was the designated landing zone for the U.B.C.S. rescue chopper. What Carlos and Mikhail didn't know was that Nicholai was actually a "Supervisor", U.B.C.S. spies that used the regular members as lures for Umbrella's bio-weapons and other mutated creatures. He also killed the other Supervisors, so that he could be the sole survivor and monopolize all the battle data procured on Raccoon, earning a huge bonus from Umbrella.

The only snag in Nicholai's plans was Jill Valentine. Knowing that her status as a former STARS member came with a huge price on her head, Nicholai planned to collect on the reward. First though, he pretended to cooperate with her and his "friends," but eventually faked his own death (either by being blown up inside a gas station or by being killed by zombies) so that he could work unobserved and hunt down the remaining U.B.C.S. members.

This went smoothely for a while until Carlos caught him trying to kill another supervisor, Tyrell Patrick at the Raccoon Hospital. His cover blown, Nicholai was forced to wire the hospital to explode to cover his tracks. Eventually Nicholai followed Carlos and Jill to the Dead Factory in the hopes of personally popping them, but alas, his plan was not to be.

(Because so much of what happens in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis depends on what the player does and when to trigger certain endings, three things could've ended up happening to Nicholai. He could've either tried to kill Jill face to face only to be attacked and slain by Nemesis, or he could've stolen a helicopter; in stealing the helicopter, Jill could either shoot him out of the sky with a bazooka or tried to strike a deal with him, in which case Nicholai would've flown away and escaped. It is not known how this affects the timeline of the games, although for what it's worth, the novelization of the game by S.D. Perry uses the ending where Nicholai is killed by Nemesis.)

(Nicholai also recently appeared in Resident Evil: Outbreak. It depicts Nicholai and a few other U.B.C.S. members on a mission to assassinate Greg Muller and retrieve a sample of Daylight. Although he succeeded in killing Greg, it is unknown if Nicholai managed to obtain Daylight.)

Films

Nicholai Ginovaef was a Russian mmember of the UBCS and a good friend to Carlos Olivera. Along with Carlos and Yuri Loginova, he was the longest survivor of the UBCS in Raccoon City and after they realized that Umbrella had abandoned them, they turned mercenary and agreed to help Dr. Charles Ashford find his daughter Angela for him in exchange for him getting them out of the city. Nicholai did not survive long enough to escape the city unfortunately, as he was killed by mutant dogs at Raccoon City Junior School shortly after finding her and Jill Valentine.

(Nicholai's name is given as Nicholai Sokolov in the novelization by Keith R.A. DeCandido.)
