Biography

Battling Diana in Wonder Woman v5 #42.

Grail was the female daughter of Myrina of the Amazons of Themyscira and Darkseid of Apokolips. She was born by her mother to serve as a living weapon against her father Darkseid in order to end the threat posed by the New God. (Justice League v2 #42) Her mother had given birth to her in secret where she was aided by Penelope with the event being watched over by the oracle Menalippe. After the child's birth, the oracle spoke of a prophecy of destruction that would be caused by Myrina's offspring. This led to Penelope attempting to murder the newborn but her mother prevented her fellow Amazon from accomplishing the task. Myrina then murdered Menalippe and fled Themsycira where she took her daughter with her and became the first Amazon to ever leave the island. (Divergence v1 #1)

Decades later, she and her mother came to forge a secret alliance with the Anti-Monitor in order to use Mobius to kill Darkseid. (Justice League v2 #40)

She attacked Wonder Woman to prevent her in interfering with her fathers fight with Zeus. During the battle, Jason intervened to save his sister leading to Grail turning against him as she intended to ensure that Darkseid regained Apokolip's throne. Grail pursued her father and Zeus through a Boom Tube that took their fight to the Philippines with her being similarly chased by Jason who was looking to stop her. She then witnessed as Darkseid successfully leeched the power from Zeus and restored himself to his true form leaving the Olympian god slain. Darkseid then bade her to follow him through a Boom Tube as they departed to achieve the new goal in the evil New God's plan. (Wonder Woman v5 #37)

After Ares death, his hold over their prison broke allowing Grail to free herself where she journeyed to the Amazon city on Themyscira and toppled Hippolyta. She then took her place on the throne with Nubia seemingly siding with her alongside other Amazon warriors where she promised them that they would conquer the world. Hippolyta, however, refused to relinquish the crown and it was then that Wonder Woman along with her allies arrived where they battled their kin to stop Grail. This forced Grail to flee where she intended to use Isadore as a hostage but she was betrayed by Nubia thus leading to her capture once again. (Wonder Woman v5 #75)

Notes

  • Grail was created by Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok where she made her first appearance in Justice League v2 #40 (June, 2015).
  • In an interview on CBR, Johns wrote, "We'll learn more about Grail, but Grail is the physical embodiment of the link between the old gods and the New Gods, and has been raised and trained with a very specific purpose. She is a weapon to destroy Darkseid. And Myrina has, as she says, a plan to destroy Darkseid, and she's been building this quite some time. Grail is that weapon. You'll learn more about Grail's upbringing and what she wants and who she is, but she's got that darkness in her. You clearly see she enjoys it. I think she smiles more than any other character in that issue, ironically. And she's a really fun character to write. She's extremely dangerous. She reminds me of a viper -- really slick, beautiful, but you can't get to close. And she is fast. And deadly. And scary. You've got to keep your distance from her."

Alternate Versions

  • In Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman v1 #1 (2021), an alternate version of Grail appeared in the possible timeline of Future State. This version was attacking a facility when her activities drew the attention of the new Wonder Woman Nubia with the two being old enemies.
