Grey Wings (Cold Winter)
Grey Wings is an organization that features in the video game Cold Winter.
Overview
The Grey Wings were a secret society that was formed in the 20th century which sought to save the world from destruction. The inspiration for the name of the group came from H. G. Wells's literary work "The Shape of Things to Come" that was written in 1935. His work included a group of aviators known as the Grey Wings who saved the world from destruction. A young boy known as John Grey first read the novel when it was realized and later saw its film version in 1937 that always inspired him. When he was a young man, the world was rocked by the actions of World War II where Grey served as a pilot in the United Kingdom's armed forces who managed to survive the conflict and see the cold hearted post-war period. Later, in 1952 in Switzerland, a select group of military men from the various branches that were active during the war. This meeting concluded at the time of the Cold War where their conclusion came that a new conflict was over the horizon between the worlds two superpowers as well as their proxies - a war that the planet would not survive. It was then that John Grey recalled his fond memories of H. G. Wells work and suggested the formation of a secret society to save the world from nuclear weapons. Drawing up Well's literary novel, they decided to call themselves the Grey Wings who would continue to operate in secret in the years that went by.
For the next ten years, the world had to be saved too many times during this period but John Grey along with the Grey Wings were simply not ready by this point. Thus, they worked to eliminate any threat to the world that possessed a nuclear stockpile which they did so in secret. They did not recognise nations and governments with their enemy simply being the entire world that possessed such weapons. Thus, they worked to eliminate such targets where they struck at secret bases or transports carrying such stockpiles of nuclear arsenals. Over the years it had become a fully established organization with a quiet membership within the secret society. However, by 1977, they concluded that their actions were in vain as there were simply too many powers that possessed the means to create nuclear weapons. Thus, John Grey steered the Grey Wings to become a more radical organization after the death of his wife by cancer following his estrangement from her. He concluded that the only way for the world to be saved was by creating a mutually assured destruction scenario with nuclear weapons being launched from around the globe in order to bring about a peace enforced by a nuclear winter. The Winterlong was thus planned in 1981 and the Grey Wings worked diligently to achieve this new goal.
Grey intended to achieve this goal by secretly allowing the various nations around the world to gain access to a new missile guidance system called Octopus. This was part of the Grey Wings Operation: Cold Winter initiative in order to provoke conflict that would devastate the Earth. During this time, Grey himself learnt that his long lost son was still alive and had a daughter which forced John Grey to decide on whether to pursue his organizations aims or save the life of his infant granddaughter. Thus, he betrayed the Grey Wings which allowed Andrew Sterling to destroy their headquarters reactor. Later, John Grey was alone by a bench when he was approached by his former subordinates who were well aware of his betrayal. Expecting their action, he simply sat whilst they assassinated him for his actions before leaving.
- The fate of the Grey Wings is unknown, presumably the organization survived but was not severely set back and depleted.
