Harry Schwartz was a casual acquaintance of Dr. Mark Kenniston. He worked as a dishwasher at the diner Kenniston often stopped in for breakfast. A bright young man, when the clone emerged from the kitchen sink to attack, Harry immediately armed himself with a large meat cleaver. Using this, he fought off the creature successfully. It was his cleaver that chopped off part of the clone, gaining Mark a specimen to study.

Despite being just a dishwasher, Harry had a strong sense of duty to protect his fellow human beings and whenever he could, he would help them. His initial efforts to stop the clone from absorbing people were rather clumsy. One man, a customer at the diner, began having his foot absorbed. First Harry poured boiling water on the clone tissue, which only caused the man pain. Harry then cut his foot off with the cleaver, but some of the clone remained attached to the man's leg and continued absorbing him.

Later, when the doctors were experimenting with the clone tissue sample, Dr. Rudolph Agnew got some on his hand and it began absorbing his arm. Having learned from his mistakes, Harry got ahead of the advancing clone tissue this time and cut Agnew's arm off below the elbow, saving the doctor. When an intern got some clone on his hand as Agnew had, he refused to allow Harry to amputate it; instead Mark poured iodine on it, seemingly killing it. Harry remained apprehensive and wanted to amputate the hand anyway, but still the intern refused. Ultimately Harry's worst fears were confirmed when it was revealed the clone went inside the intern's arm and absorbed him from within.

Harry would continue to carry and use his cleaver as a defensive weapon throughout his and Mark's adventures. He stuck by Mark's side throughout the entire ordeal. When Mark and Ian Sorensen went to the TV studio to force Mayor Slattery, who was giving mostly inaccurate information to the public in an address, to tell the truth, Harry got them past security by threatening a guard with the cleaver. Later, during Mark's dive into the flooded subway to fight the clone with the help of the fire department's underwater search and rescue team, it was Harry who held Mark's lifeline and pulled him to safety when the plan failed.

When Mark went searching for Edie Hempstead, who had become trapped at the women's prison where she was doing volunteer work, Harry and his trusty cleaver again accompanied Mark. Harry joined Mark and others in carrying injured prisoners too hurt to move, and successfully made it to safety. He along with Mark and Edie were eventually evacuated by reporter Buz Kingsley's news chopper not long after.
