Dr. Mark Kenniston was a junior pathologist employed at Chicago's City Hospital. He was disillusioned with his work and unsure if he could complete his remaining years of internship to become a full-time pathology. He didn't have much of a person life, although he was romantically involved with nurse Edie Hempstead.

One day on his way to work he stopped by his favorite diner for breakfast, where he discovered chaos. Some kind of amorphous creature had emerged from the sink and had begun absorbing the kitchen staff. Escaping with the diner's dishwasher Harry Schwartz, Kenniston attempted to warn the police, but Sergeant Dwyer brushed them off, as the department was already swamped with an influx of missing persons reports.

Kenniston returned to the hospital with Harry accompanying him. There, the "clone" attacked the hospital's cafeteria, absorbing several people. Harry used a meat cleaver he'd appropriated from the diner, and cut off a piece of the clone which Mark captured in a sugar jar. He, Harry and Edie took the clone sample to the pathology lab where they ran tests, observing the clone tissue's consumption of numerous mice. Assisted by his supervisor Dr. Agnew (who had his own close call with the clone) Mark discovered that iodine could kill the clone tissue.

An intern assisting them got careless and got the clone on his hand and Mark tried to kill it by pouring iodine on it; however this only killed the surface. The clone went inside the intern's arm and absorbed him from the inside-out. Not long after this, Health Commissioner Sorensen arrived and spoke with Mark about the crisis. Mark was aghast to learn that Mayor Slattery was blaming the situation on "sewer snakes" and planned to flush the sewers to get rid of the clone.

Angered, Mark, accompanied by Sorensen, went to see the Mayor personally at the TV station, where Slattery was forced at gunpoint to let Sorensen take over to tell the public the truth. With that taken care of, Mark coordinated with the Mayor and other city officials to properly deal with the ravenous lake of slime living beneath Chicago's streets.

He and Harry rode with the fire chief downtown to where the clone was attacking in the streets and coordinated the spraying of the tissue with iodine. However it soon rained and with the clone plugging up the storm drains, the city began flooding. Mark, who had diving experience, asked the fire chief if there were any way to assemble a team to divers, arm them with spray guns filled with iodine, and head under into the flooded sewers via the subway. The chief explained that they had a search and rescue team, and Mark was given seven men - Sy Riker, Bob Fulton, Chuck Danton, Ed Wolfert, Bill Heidig, Joe Reilly and Charlie Kline - to accompany him.

Underwater, Mark and the divers fought the clone with their iodine sprayers, but it partially absorbed and killed Chuck Danton and used its own dead tissue to built a protective wall blocking the attackers. The mission ended in failure. Leaving the firemen to continue fighting the monster, Mark returned to the hospital with Harry, intending to find Edie and join the rest of the city in evacuating. They found the hospital under siege from the clone. Learning from Dr. Almquist that Edie had gone to a women's prison to do volunteer work with the sick inmates, Mark and Harry hitched a ride in Buz Kingsley's news helicopter.

At the prison, he and Harry found Edie. When part of the clone came in to get them, Mark instructed everyone - Edie, Harry, the prisoners and other volunteers - to wrap themselves in cotton sheets so the clone couldn't absorb them. Carrying one woman who was too injured to walk, Mark and the prison matron led the way out of the building to a waiting fire fighting crew. No one died thanks to Mark's decision to use the cotton sheets for protection. The group was then evacuated from Chicago by the National Guard.
