Biography

Origin

With her father in Cable v2 #16.

Hope was a female Mutant born in the modern age to Louise Spalding and an unnamed male. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #526)

Her birth came to be registered across the world where this resulted in frying the systems of Cerebra at the time. Professor X then had his X-Men tasked with finding her with the child's birth being the target of various parties including the Purifiers. (X-Men: Messiah Complex v1 #1)

Mystique brought the child to Mister Sinister but then betrayed him by pressing him onto Rogue's comatose body where her death touch killed him. She then placed the child on Rogue as well under guidance from Destiny's Diaries that spoke that such a move would wake her adoptive daughter up from this state. Gambit in desperation pulled the baby away feeling Mystique had killed the infant but was amazed that the baby girl was unharmed. The child was given to Xavier who in turn gave her to Cable to keep her safe but the pair were then confronted by the Predator X. (New X-Men v2 #46) At this time, all the factions had gathered to compete with one another to claim the child either to use her or to kill her. During the fight, Cable kept the baby with him when Cyclops asked for the child with Nathan willing to fight his own father to protect the girl. It was only at Xavier's urging that he parted with the baby where Scott Summers decided that she should live and gave her back to Cable. He then bade Cable to take her somewhere where she could live her life and not be used by others. Using temporal circuits, he and the child disappeared into the timestream where he said that they would return one day. Arriving in the future, he then set about for the pair to survive the hard years ahead of them. (X-Men v2 #207)

Hope wandered the wastelands with Cable for some time, occasionally skipping decades or centuries forwards in the vain hope of finding the land restored and fresh food or water. Hope’s survivalist training continued during this period, especially after a dehydrated Cable became too weak to stand and passed out. Hope had learned her lessons well – she remained calm, assessed the situation and foraged for potable water to save her father’s life. During this trek, Hope was finally old enough that Cable shared with her the existence of mutants, and that she was destined for something greater. Cable told Hope she would know deep within herself when the time was right to fulfill her destiny. In the deserted remains of the X-Mansion, Cable and Hope found a hidden supply shelter and restocked on food and weapons. They also found a time capsule message from Cyclops, Cable’s father. Hearing Scott’s pride and trust in him for the mission to protect Hope reinvigorated Cable’s determination, and the pair skipped forward in time again. (Cable v2 #12)

From Cable’s perspective, it was only hours after they separated that he found Hope in the city. He had stolen a power source from the Unclean City’s attempt at a ship, and was now posing as Stryfe to commandeer the Clean City’s ship so they could escape the dying world. Hope wanted to bring Emil with them, but the boy’s father had gone with Bishop to the Unclean City following reports of Cable’s arrival. Emil refused to leave his father, and Cable forcibly brought Hope on board the ship before it blasted off, leaving him behind. (Cable v2 #17)

Messiah

Arriving in the present, the pair came to the destroyed X-Mansion where Hope despaired at how nothing changed and that everywhere she went all she found was destruction. It was then that the two of them came under attack from the Right who were targeting her. After eliminating them, the two went on the run though were being pursued by members of the Sapien league. (X-Men: Second Coming v1 #1)

As Hope adjusted to her life in this new time period, she was insistent about being active and contributing, not just being protected to the degree Cyclops would have preferred. She personally got involved with the clean-up and repairs in San Francisco after the Nimrod attacks. As a sign of things to come, her very presence seemed to spark new avenues for Hellion’s telekinesis. (X-Men: Legacy v1 #243) Hope also told Cyclops she wanted to look into her roots. With a small team of X-Men escorts, Hope returned to Cooperstown, Alaska for the first time since the disaster following her birth. She found Louise Spalding’s grave and left flowers for the birth mother she had never known. She also managed to spend an hour with her grandmother (without explaining her true identity) to learn more about her mother. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #526)

Hope later came to be chosen by Cyclops to join his new team of X-Men with these being known as the Extinction Team. They first responded to an incident at San Francisco at the Dreaming Celestial when Mister Sinister had commandeered the cosmic giant. (Uncanny X-Men v2 #1) Essex had grown an entire hive mind consisting of clones of himself where he attempted to use their collective telepathic power to take control of the Extinction Team. He then used their collective power against the X-Men to dominate their minds until the prime Mister Sinister was shot in the head with a sniper gun shot by Hope. This briefly broke the control but Sinister began to operate from the other clones that attacked the team. (Uncanny X-Men v2 #2) As the fight continued, Hope used the powers she borrowed to help shield the team from Sinister's attempts at controlling them. She came to kill another one of the duplicates but more kept arriving on the scene. This was until Emma Frost managed to use her telepathy to take control of Sinister briefly where she helped restore the Dreaming Celestial. Mister Sinister then decided to depart where he transferred his consciousness to a new clone elsewhere. At that point, the Celestial host arrived due to the harm made against one of their own but Cyclops and Hope assured them that the Dreaming Celestial was under their protection. The Dreaming Celestial came to vouch for the Extinction leading to his kin departing the Earth which was spared from destruction as a result. (Uncanny X-Men v2 #3)

Aftermath

She detected the coming of the Phoenix and met up with the young Jean Grey to prepare to battle the cosmic entity. (Jean Grey v1 #9)

In the aftermath of Cable's death, Hope began to struggle with her emotions over the death of her father. She collected the keys for his various safe houses which she intended to clean out and she also helped in a few training sessions in the Danger Room for the younger X-Men. During this time, Jean Grey came to console her over their shared loss as she considered Hope part of the family. Jean helped Hope in dismantling the various safehouses that her father maintained around the world. At the first site, they met Deadpool with Hope being angry at Wilson being there but he had already cleared the site. In reality, Hope was going through the various safehouses in order to recover a time machine so that she could go back and save her father. However, Jean stopped her and said that Nathan would not have wanted this with Hope eventually coming to terms with the fact that her father was dead. Thus, she destroyed the device as Jean helped Hope in showing her memories of Nathan back when he was alive. (X-Men: The Exterminated v1 #1)
