History
The Hutts were a race of slug-like semi-humanoids from the planet Nal Hutta in the galaxy far, far away. They came to rule a large area of space that came to be known as Hutt Space where the species controlled many criminal operations in the galaxy.
In the final years of the Old Republic, a prominent member of the species was Jabba the Hutt who established a base of operations on the planet Tatooine where he ruled criminal operations in the area from his palace. The galaxy came to be engulfed in the conflict of the Clone Wars fought between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. At first, the Hutts looked to remain neutral but Count Dooku aimed to force them into aligning themselves to the Separatist. For this, Dooku engaged Ziro the Hutt in a secret conspiracy that saw the kidnapping of Jabba's son Rotta. With Jabba's son threatened, the Republic came to send Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano on a mission to rescue Rotta.
After Ziro the Hutt was imprisoned, the Hutt Council feared the knowledge he kept of their criminal activities in a holodiary record. The Council hired bounty hunter Cad Bane to release Ziro from captivity and to bring him to Nal Hutta. Bane took the Galactic Senate hostage, bargaining their freedom in exchange for Ziro's. After Ziro was brought to the Hutt homeworld, he sought to avoid punishment by threatening to release the contents of his diary. In response, the Hutt Council imprisoned him. Sy Snootles freed Ziro, and the two recovered the diary from the Grave of Ziro Desilijic Tiure's father on Teth. But Snootles killed Ziro and took the records back to her employer, Jabba Desilijic Tiure, on Tatooine.
Later in the war, the renegade Sith Lord Maul approached the Grand Hutt Council on the planet Nal Hutta to offer them a place in his Shadow Collective. After denying him, a force of bounty hunters attacked Shadow Collective's forces, but after being defeated, saw one of their members, Oruba, killed by Savage Opress. Eventually, Maul's forces would visit Jabba and Gorga on Tatooine and, after a short battle, convinced the two Hutts to join them.
Once the Clone Wars was concluded, the Republic came to be re-organised into the first Galactic Empire.
After the death of Bib Fortuna, Jabba's cousins known as the Twins looked to claim his holdings on Tatooine where they were opposed by Boba Fett who had declared himself daimyo of the planet. Initially, they looked to enforce their claim but backed off after learning that the world's mayor had sold it to the Pyke Syndicate.
Overview
In appearance, the Hutts were large slug-like creatures where they had big tail that allowed them to crawl across the floor whilst their upper body had a pair of arms.
The Hutt Clans were a powerful group of families among their kind with the prestigious title of Master of the Hutt Clans afforded to the elite among their people. It made its riches through smuggling and myriad illegal businesses across worlds.
A key body within their society was the Hutt Cartel that was a loose confederation of criminal families, mercenary elements, and front organizations. It was financially invested in every illicit enterprise in the Outer Rim; engaged in spice smuggling, slavery, gambling, extortion, and bounty hunting. The nature of this consortium prohibited any strong central authority.
Governance over their race was held by the Hutt Grand Council that was a committee of elder Hutts who would advise on strategy and make decisions on inter-family disputes.
The native language of the species was Huttese that was spoken by them and their subjects.
Hutt Space was a 'special autonomous region' of the galaxy on the border between the Mid Rim and the Outer Rim Territories where it was located to the galactic east of the Core Worlds.

Alternate Versions
- In the Star Wars Legends, the Hutts appeared in the setting of the former Star Wars Expanded Universe continuity. They were described as being an ancient race who originally came from the planet Varl. It was noted that in ancient times the world was once part of the Rakata's Infinite Empire. Varl was also said to be the home of their distant cousins the t'landa Til and the Rybets also claimed it was their homeworld until a war with the Hutts nearly destroyed the planet. The Hutts themselves, however, dismissed these claims and instead said that long ago they resided on their world that orbited two suns named Ardos and Evona where they were worshipped as gods. Accounts varied on the surface of Varl as some said it was a barren wastelands whilst others claimed it was a lush paradise. Regardless, the early history of the Hutts was a mystery but it was known that under Ardustagg the Absolute that a series of mass uprisings were made against the Rakata during the fall of their Infinite Empire which ultimately freed Varl from their control. Seizing the Rakatan technology, the Hutts went about using it to forge their own empire. Much of this early history was unknown and what few accounts had turned into mythology but it was said that the Hutts became an aggressive warrior species with expansionist plans as they invaded other worlds. Other species were either exterminated or enslaved to become thralls of the Hutts with this being the fate of hundreds of planets. This resultant empire was centered in a region of territory that came to be known as Hutt Space.
