Biography

Jabba Desilijic Tiure was a male member of the Hutt species who lived a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. He was noted to had risen to power during the reign of the Galactic Republic where he established himself as the undisputed kingpin of crime operating from the desert world of Tatooine. From there, he came to control the spice trade and slavery rings that operated throughout the Outer Rim territories. He maintained a popular public image by hosting the Boonta Eve podraces but in reality he was was a vile, disgusting monster who liked seeing others suffer. He kept many scantily-clad dancing girls, who he fed to his pet Rancor. Shortly after the start of the Invasion of Naboo in 32 BBY, Jabba presided over the Boonta Eve Classic podrace, where his entrance in the stands was greeted with cheers from the spectators who came to watch the race from all corners of the Outer Rim Territories. Jabba signaled the start of the race, and the podracers began their laps, at the end of which Anakin Skywalker, a young slave from Mos Espa, emerged victorious. Jabba had to be awoken after falling asleep during the race, as podracing did not entertain him—aside from the gambling involved

After the outbreak of the Clone Wars, he was noted to had been neutral in the galactic conflict waged between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. However, Count Dooku looked to forcibly make the crime lord align himself with the Separatists as he wanted to secure travel routes through the Outer Rim held by the Hutts. This saw the Count arranging for events that led to the kidnapping of Jabba's son Rotta in order to blackmail the Hutt. The Jedi Order came to intervene on behalf of the Republic with Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano recovering Rotta from Asajj Ventress.

Later on, his uncle Ziro was arrested and detained at a Republic prison for his alliance to the Separatists. Jabba came to hire the bounty hunter Cad Bane to free him as he had in his possession a journal that documented the criminal activities of the Hutt families. Thus, the bounty hunter was sent to free Ziro to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Republic. Though Bane succeeded in his goal, Ziro came to escape his grasp in the end and was on the loose. However, Jabba had a contingency which as to hire Ziro's former lover Sy Snootles into assassinating him thus ending the threat posed by his uncle. Jabba was later faced by Chairman Papanoida whose daughters were kidnapped by the Rodian Greedo. In that time, the Hutt allowed a sample of Greedo's blood to be taken to prove him the kidnapper. Afterwards, the Hutt Council was approached by the Shadow Collective that was an alliance of various crime syndicates under the leadership of the fallen Sith lord Darth Maul. In response, Jabba dispatched bounty hunters including Embo, Dengar, Sugi and Latts Razzi to capture Maul along with his allies Savage Opress and Pre Vizsla. Following the battle, the Shadow Collective attacked Jabba's palace on Tatooine in order to force him into joining the Shadow Collective.

Uninvolved in the war between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance, Jabba nonetheless became a problem for the Alliance after he placed a bounty on Han Solo. Jabba confronted Han Solo in Docking Bay 94 of Mos Eisley Spaceport, strong-arming the smuggler to pay his debts. The crime lord had placed a bounty on Han, and his patience was worn thin. Despite Han blasting Greedo, one of Jabba’s henchman, the giant slug-like alien allowed him more time to pay up for an extra 15 percent. After the bounty hunter Boba Fett captured Solo and brought him to Jabba's palace on Tatooine frozen in carbonite in the throne room. Sometime later, members of the Rebel Alliance came to mount a rescue operation where they infiltrated Jabba's palace. The initial rescue attempt failed with Princess Leia winding up enslaved as one of Jabba's dancing girls. However, Luke Skywalker managed to arrive soon afterwards where he demanded that Jabba free his friends. Jabba though did not believe Luke was a Jedi Knight and instead had him dropped into the Rancor pit. Much to the shock of everyone, the human was able to kill the beast. This act came to enrage Jabba who ordered that Luke, Solo and Chewbacca be fed to the Sarlacc in the Great Pit of Carkoon. Jabba came to travel to the site with his entourage where they made their way on a sail barge across the Dune Sea. An execution of the captives was intended where they were to be dropped into the pit but Skywalker managed to free himself along with his allies who all acted in unison. In the midst of the fighting, Leia Organa came to use her slave chains to strangle the large Hutt by choking him to death. Many of Jabba's forces that accompanied him were killed and the sail barge was destroyed as the Rebels fled the scene.

After his death, his holdings on Tatooine was taken over by his former majordomo Bib Fortuna. He came to operate there for many years until the reign of the New Republic when Boba Fett sought to claim Jabba's criminal empire. This saw him killing the Twi'lek majordomo with Fett becoming the Daimyo in control of Tatooine and its various crime families. However, Jabba's cousins the Twins came to the desert world looking to take over their late cousin's holdings but faced opposition from Boba Fett.

  • Jabba the Hutt was created by George Lucas where he was first referenced in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

Alternate Versions

  • In Star Wars Legends, Jabba the Hutt appeared in the setting of the former Star Wars Expanded Universe. Jabba, who was born on Nal Hutta, was the child of Zorba Desilijic Tiure. He took formal control of the Desilijic kajidic around 2 BBY, when he killed the offspring of Jiliac, the former leader. The old Hutt died following a grueling fight to the death with Durga Besadii Tai. At the incredibly young age of 80, the up-and-coming gangster established his criminal empire on the remote desert world of Tatooine, located in the Tatoo system. In 516 BBY, he moved his criminal operations into an old B'omarr Monastery, safely nestling himself in the planet's comfortable obscurity. Jabba started small, finding early work as a high-risk gunrunner, along with his lifelong friend Ephant Mon. During Senator Palpatine's rise to power, the Hutt was one of several gangsters who made his bid for dominance. His competitors included Sise Fromm, the then-kingpin of organized crime in the galaxy and Prince Xizor, fledgling heir to the Black Sun criminal empire. Though neither Xizor nor Jabba were by any means young, both had just been handed the reins of power established by their respective criminal families. While Fromm played war games, Xizor and Jabba sensed the winds of change and spent their resources garnering favor with those who seemed to be shifting into power. Due to the attractive nature of becoming a gangster during the galaxy's time of change, he attained minions. After his majordomo's death, the Twi'lek Bib Fortuna would become his new majordomo early on. He was always in attendance where Jabba was, be it podraces, the Palace, or other ventures. Bib would later be replaced by Naroon Cuthus, only to take power again years later.
