John Lanyon
Dr. John Lanyon was a friend and colleague of Dr. Henry Jekyll. A very practical, down-to-earth scientist, Lanyon disapproved of Jekyll's wild theories about separating man's two selves. He believed in limits to scientific study.
Following a lengthy disappearance by Jekyll, Lanyon received a letter from him, telling him to collect items from his lab and then meet a messenger. The messenger turned out to be hunted murderer Edward Hyde. Armed with a gun, Lanyon demanded an explanation from Hyde, who obliged by mixing and drinking the chemicals Lanyon had retrieved from Jekyll's laboratory. Before Lanyon's disbelieving eyes, Hyde transformed into Henry Jekyll!
Furious with Jekyll for his transgressive experiments, Lanyon threatened to turn him in to the police for the murder of Ivy Pearson. However he relented after Jekyll promised never to drink the formula again. Lanyon nevertheless had doubts, due to Jekyll's claim that prior to killing Ivy he had become Hyde without the aid of the drug.
His doubt were well-founded. Immediately after leaving Lanyon's home, Jekyll turned into Hyde once again and killed General Danvers Carew during an attack on his daughter. His patience with his colleague used up, Lanyon led the police to Jekyll's house and, with the unwitting assistance of Jekyll himself who transformed into Hyde under duress, was able to give the police their killer.
