Biography

Lust (Japanese: ラスト, Hepburn: Rasuto) was one of the Homunculi that were created by Father. Following the destruction of the nation of Xerxes, Father began to wander the lands and sought to accomplish his mysterious goals. Thus saw him creating new homonculi that were patterned after the Seven Deadly Sins of Man and were generated from traits in his own personality. In addition, Father created further homunculi that included Pride Envy, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and finally Wrath. She was later present during an emergency situation in Central involving the Freezing Alchemist, Lust was seen reporting to somebody over the phone about the progress in Liore, apparently stationed within the town's cathedral. Expressing pity over the death of McDougal due to his status as a 'human pillar', she paused briefly in order to chastise Gluttony over eating weird things, before returning to the phone and mentioning their plan would begin very soon.

Several days later, the Fullmetal Alchemist and his brother had uncovered the truth in Liore to its population and defeated the false priest Father Cornello. Both Lust and Gluttony appeared to the priest within the cathedral as he attempted to escape the enraged masses. Recognizing them, Cornello was quickly killed by Lust before he could attack. Commenting that they will have to start over in the town and how Father would be unhappy where Lust chose to do nothing as Gluttony begins devouring the false priest's body. Not long after killing the priest, it is revealed that they had replaced him with an exact duplicate in order to continue spreading the religious fever within the town. Watching the town fall into chaos and destruction due to the division between the faithful and the 'heathens', Lust could only laugh at how foolish humans were with Gluttony echoing her words. Also agreeing, the fake Cornello approached them from behind while Lust merely went on to comment that the intervention of the Elrics had been turned into something beneficial. Looking over to the priest, Lust asked how long he planned to remain in that form, only for the duplicate to respond that he was only going with the flow. Relenting, the other then transforms back into his original appearance and is revealed to be an accomplice named Envy. From inside the hall behind them, one of Father Cornello's followers witnesses Envy's transformation and demands to know what happened to the real man. Before either Lust or Envy could do anything however, Gluttony quickly jumps on instinct and eats the man before he can tell anyone else. Discussing the death of Shou Tucker by the hands of Scar, Lust begins to worry about the safety of the Flame Alchemist and the Fullmetal Alchemist due to their standing as a 'human sacrifices', and promises to do something about it.

Overview

Personality and attributes

She tended to act calm and confident, but became unhinged when pushed to a corner. She was loyal to Father, acted motherly towards Gluttony, and seemed to have a good relationship with Envy, but disliked Greed.

Powers and abilities

Though appearing human, Lust was in fact a Homunculus (人造人間ホムンクルス, Homunkurusu, Latin for "Little Human", Japanese for "Artificial Human") with her being an artificial being born from an aspect of Father and possessing a Philosopher's Stone (賢者の石, Kenja no Ishi). This quality meant that she did not age and in fact remained looking in the prime of her youth. Similarly, she did not need to eat or drink or even breath with her being able to function without such basic needs. Furthermore, she possessed superhuman physical abilities including increased reflexes, speed, endurance and strength when compared to an ordinary human. One of her noted qualities was her physical attractiveness which she used to her advantage. Using her enticing looks, she played the role of a manipulator within the Homunculi ranks, moving covertly around the country to lure weak-willed people into the clutches of their own lust, to be used and disposed of when no longer needed.

As a homunculus, she possessed incredible regenerative abilities with any injuries immediately healing. Even if she was decapitated, disintegrated, blown up, or completely incinerated, Lust would still return to life in perfect condition. With this ability, she was able to almost instantly regenerate from bullet wounds caused by small rounds, and within minutes able to completely regenerate from a devastating explosion. If her Philosopher's Stone located in her was pulled out then her body would crumble into dust though a new one would form around it. However, such regenerative powers were not infinite but were determined by the energy within the Philosopher's Stone itself. If this were depleted, then Lust was killed and her body turned to dust as a result.

Lust's unique ability was to extend her fingertips into long, flexible, and thin claws sharp enough to cut through practically any substance with ease, earning her the nickname Ultimate Spear among the Homunculi. The incredible lengths she could extend and retract them meant that Lust was able to kill her opponents at any distance with ease.

Notes

  • Lust was created Hiromu Arakawa where he featured in the setting of the Fullmetal Alchemist universe.

In other media

Television

  • In Fullmetal Alchemist, Lust appeared in the setting of the 2003 anime television series where she was voiced by Japanese actress Yuuko Satou and by English actress Laura Bailey in the dub. This version had a different backstory as Homunculi were the result of failed attempts by people to bring back the dead through human transmutation. In Lust's case, she was created by Scar's brother, when he attempted to use alchemy to bring his lover back from the dead. After he was cast out from Ishvalan society as a heretic, Envy visited the wretched creature and fed it red stones, giving her human shape, and her new name. She was not the first Homunculus to bear the name of Lust, and was the third youngest Homunculus, only Wrath and Sloth are younger. She was often directly involved in encouraging humans to seek out the Philosopher's Stone, using their desire for the stone to her advantage. Once baited, the alchemists are molded into following whatever path that best suits Lust and the other Homunculi's designs. She also tends to be more involved with the intrigue side of various conspiracies. Following the Lior incident, she began to recover some memories of her life as a human with her wanting to become human as a result.
