History

The Majesdanians were a humanoid extraterrestrial species that had the ability to manipulate light and were native to the planet Majesdane. Their homeworld was hidden beneath the corona of a white dwarf and its inhabitants developed into an interstellar culture. Despite their presence in space, their home planet was considered mythical by other civilizations with some in the Skrull empire looking to plunder it. (Runaways v1 #8)

Decades ago, a pair of Majesdane criminals who later went by the name of Franklin Dean and Leslie Dean were exiled for their activities. They later found refuge on Earth where they had a daughter named Karolina Dean. During this time, the Skrulls attempted an invasion of the planet which was stopped by the Deans who offered the location of their birth planet of Majesdane. As an assurance that the coordinates were accurate, the Dean's offered their only daughter's hand in an arranged marriage to the Skrull prince with her having to wed his son Xavin once the pair reached adulthood. At some point afterwards, a bloody war erupted between Majesdane and the Skrull outpost of Tarnax VII which had raged for the past 15 years. (Runaways v1 #8)

During the wedding ceremony, a Skrullos guest insulted one of the Majesdanian bridesmaids dresses which resulted in a fight among the adults from both parties that broke down the peace that had been built. (Runaways v1 #17)

Afterwards, a Skrull war ship arrived over Majesdane and launched two thermonutrons at the planet's poles where their explosions triggered a fiery chain reaction that could not be stopped. It consumed the planet killing 9 billion Majesdanians whose civilization was destroyed as the world split and gradually fell into the sun. In response, the Majesdanians launched a counterattack where they struck at a Skrull moon killing thousands of their enemies but this did not compare to the losses they had faced. (Runaways v3 #2) The Majesdane had the blame placed on the renegade members of their kind that became the Dean family on Earth. Thus, survivors decided to seek revenge against their offspring Karolina Dean where they sought to abduct her and take her back for trial. Initially, they faced opposition by the Runaways who were eventually overwhelmed where Karolina seemingly willingly surrendered herself to bring about peace. Unknown to the Majesdanians, this was actually the Skrull prince Xavin who took the form of his love to allow her to stay on Earth and to help bring about peace between his kind and those of the Majesdane. (Runaways v3 #6)

Smugglers began moving refugees from a remote part of the Majesdanian system with these being intercepted by Carol Danvers and Alpha Flight. (Mighty Captain Marvel v1 #0) Roxnor the Purifier of a world in the Majesdane empire kidnapped a Dwarf named Eoffren in order to force him to build magical weapons which he intended to use to attack Earth. (Doctor Strange v5 #4)

Overview

In appearance, the body structure of a Majesdane was humanoid in form though their natural state was that of a luminous, iridescent, and visually fluid, often depicted with waves of rainbow-like light floating off their bodies. (Runaways v1 #3)

They had a natural ability to fly allowing them to soar through the air. (Runaways v1 #3) Majesdanians were shown to generate light from their bodies with them either able to fire it as blasts or create powerful bursts of light that could temporarily blind people. (Runaways v1 #4) Another ability was to create an impenetrable shield around a target either to protect allies or entrap enemies. (Runaways v1 #17)

The law of the Majesdane was them to accept death before dishonour. Thus, their defeated warriors willingly allowed their foe to kill them rather than to continue to live with their disgrace. (Doctor Strange v5 #5)

Their elite military corps was the Light Brigade that were a skilled fighting force. (Runaways v3 #2)

• Majesdanians were created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona where they made their first appearance in Runaways v1 #1 (July, 2003).
• A character resembling a Majesdanian was shown as a member of the Knowhere Corps in Guardians of the Galaxy v4 #5 (April, 2016).

In other media

Television

• In Runaways, the Majesdanians were not named but aspects of them were shown in the backstory of the live-action television series. It was shown that the original character of Jonah was an advanced extraterrestrial who came to Earth many decades ago where he used his advanced technology to form the cult-like Pride to achieve his goals. He mated with the human Leslie Dean who gave birth to his daughter Karolina Dean who shared her fathers light manipulation abilities.
