Biography

Martinique Jason was a female Mutant who was the daughter of the illusion casting Jason Wyngarde. (Wolverine/Gambit: Victims v1 #2)

After her fathers death, she decided to continue the family legacy by taking the name of Mastermind. (Wolverine/Gambit: Victims v1 #2)

Martinique’s moral upturn was not to last and she quickly returned to old ways once she took over Arcade’s Murderworld. Seeking information on her new real estate windfall, she enlisted the help of the firm Nelson and Murdock, which just so happened to be run by Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil. Deciding to have some fun, Martinique took Foggy Nelson to Coney Island and then laid in wait for Daredevil to show up to save him. When he did so, Martinique played games with the hero, making him believe he was being set upon by a number of his adversaries, like Typhoid Mary and Kingpin, and then forcing him to choose between the lives of Foggy or Elektra. Before Martinique herself could be caught, she too disappeared, leaving the two confused men behind. (Daredevil v1 #352)

Martinique joined up with Mystique’s latest incarnation of the Brotherhood in an attempt to kill Senator Kelly. Whilst the other members like Post, Blob and Avalanche attacked directly, Mastermind kept away from the fray and manipulated the appearance of things around them. Cable and the X-Men were on hand to try and stop the assassination, so Mastermind kept them distracted by making them attack the wrong targets. Unfortunately for her, Pyro, who was dying of the Legacy Virus, had gained a conscience and alerted the X-Men to Mastermind’s meddling. Using his psimitar, Cable stabbed Martinique and put her in a coma. Despite their best efforts, the X-Men failed in saving Senator Kelly and the Brotherhood disbanded afterwards. (Cable v2 #87)

She was by her father's grave paying her respects when she was visited by the Sisterhood of Mutants that had been formed by Madelyne Pryor with her sister Martinique being among them. Regan came to point a gun at Pryor's head though she was looking to recruit Lady Mastermind and offered to resurrect her father. This led to Regan joining the team much to the disgust of her half-sister Martinique. The Sisterhood later went to San Francisco in order to conduct a spell involving Kwannon's body and a captive Psylocke thus restoring her to her original body. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #508) The Sisterhood got Psylocke settled in to her new form, then they planned an attack on the X-Men at Utopia. Martinique teamed up with Chimera, and the two of them attacked Cyclops and a few of the students. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #509) Emma broke Cyclops free of Mastermind's illusions. The X-Men got the upper hand and the Sisterhood retreated, having stolen a lock of Jean Grey's hair to gain her DNA. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #510) The Sisterhood arrived at a building in San Francisco, where Red Queen abandoned Psylocke and the Mastermind Sisters, even as the X-Men including Storm, Emma Frost, and Dazzler closed in, easily defeating the villains. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #511)

Regan and Martinique, dressed identically, were in their father's estate fighting with insults and fists when the demonic Mrs. Gwynn entered, telling them another heir to Mastermind's estate was on her way. (X-Men: Pixie Strikes Back v1 #2) Mrs. Gwynn, after resisting the illusions of the Mastermind sisters, explained that she was the mother of Jason Wyngarde's third daughter, Megan Gwynn, Pixie of the X-Men. She convinced the sisters to help her go after Megan, but they found the X-Men consisting of Emma Frost, Nightcrawler, Anole, Psylocke, Rockslide with them waiting. (X-Men: Pixie Strikes Back v1 #3) The Mastermind sisters watched as the X-Men battled demons, and Pixie learned from Mrs. Gwynn that Mastermind was her father. Pixie initially argued with the sisters, but then knocked out Emma Frost before casting an illusion that convinced the demon Saturnine to kill the other demons and herself. Before X-23 could attack, Pixie teleported the Mastermind sisters away. (X-Men: Pixie Strikes Back v1 #4) Steve Rogers would later write an assessment of Mastermind for his government files. (Heroic Age: X-Men v1 #1) Lady Mastermind was later shown to had ended up in jail. Hope Summers was in the visiting room when Mastermind entered, allowing Hope to copy her powers temporarily. (Cable and X-Force v1 #9) Martinique was present when Beast brought Colossus through the Krakoan gates, but Wolverine chased her and the others off. (X-Force v6 #12)

Following M-Day, Martinique was found amnesiac and catatonic in her costume in the streets of San Francisco. After meeting a trio of aged hippies and entering their minds, seeing their innermost desires, as a favor to them, she began transforming the city into how it was back in 1969, and was known as the Goddess. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #498)

Overview

Personality and attributes

She took the name of Mastermind as her code name. (Wolverine/Gambit: Victims v1 #2) Afterwards, she went by her father's family name and was called Martinique Wyngarde. (X-Men: Pixie Strikes Back v1 #3)

Martinique was shown to hold an intense hatred of her half-sister Regan with the two often trading insults with one another. According to her, she hated Regan for 'stealing the spotlight' with the two insulting the other by calling the other a 'skank'. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #508)

Powers and abilities

Unlike her father, she was also a novice telepath allowing her to probe the minds of others. This allowed her to probe the minds of others in order to discern their thoughts and create more convincing illusions. This was by mixing the illusion with memories making the reality she created as being hypnotic to the person affected by the power. Thus, it was claimed that her illusions were far superior to the ones created by Jason Wyngarde. (Wolverine/Gambit: Victims v1 #3)

Notes

  • Martinique Jason was created by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale where she made her first appearance in Wolverine/Gambit: Victims v1 #1 (September, 1995).
