Biography

Origin

Michael Christian Amar was a male human born in the modern age where he grew up to become a doctor. He began to operate within the twin cities of Central City and Keystone City where he was seemingly a mild-mannered doctor. However, in reality, he was a serial killer where over a period of eight months he was responsible for at least 50 murders with few ties that placed him on the crime scene. Nine years ago in the Winter, he broke into a home where he killed one woman and was ready to kill another when the police arrived at the scene. Michael responded by attacking one of the officers who in turn opened fire on him. They were able to save the remaining victim with Amar still being alive though badly injured. Afterwards, he was taken to trial to stand in judgement for his actions where forensic analyst Barry Allen gave his first testimony against Dr. Amar and proved his guilt in a significant number of murders. The overwhelming evidence against Amar led to him being declared guilty by the judge who sentenced him to death by lethal injection. He was later placed in Iron Heights Penitentiary where he remained there for years. Murmur was noted to had hated the talks of the guards and had even bitten off the tongue of one of them. He also lamented how his own inability to stay quiet led to him being convicted for his crimes with Murmur cutting out his own tongue as well as sewing his mouth shut. In time, he came to be transferred to the Pipeline that was a wing for Metahumans powered criminals within Iron Height where he came to be among its the residents that had been incarcerated there the longest. In the present, he had secretly been creating his Frenzy virus which he slowly started infecting people in the prison. As a result, Iron Heights went into a lockdown that trapped most of the people inside with only the guards suffering from the mutated respiratory virus. In response, the Flash was dispatched to investigate and find a cure for the disease with Wally West working alongside the reformed Pied Piper. By this point, Murmur had escaped his cell and was hunting down the guards when the Flash confronted him and learnt that Amar was responsible for the virus. He failed to get information from Murmur who then activated the water sprinkler system that actually had been tainted with the Frenzy virus. This infected everyone in the prison including the Flash though Murmur himself was immune. He used the chaos of this time to escape the prison where he began once again committing murders by targeting innocent victims. It was then that he was approached by the Blacksmith who revealed her part in his freedom and had recruited him into her team. (The Flash: Iron Heights v1 #1)

Upon accepting, he joined the ranks of the criminal Network and was placed in a new incarnation of the Rogues whose first mission was to hunt down the Flash. They struck at the Scarlet Speedster where Murmur came to infect him once again with the Frenzy virus. (The Flash v2 #184) Their ambush was interrupted by the Thinker who was conducting his own operation against the city and the Flash where he had a use for the hero. As such, he aided Wally West in finding a cure for the virus and had helped him escape the Rogues. (The Flash v2 #185)

He came to be imprisoned in the Pipeline at Iron Heights once again until the prison came under attack by mind controlled gorillas that were being used by Gorilla Grodd to free himself. This saw the apes break open the cells in the Pipeline with Murur being among the supervillains attempting to escape Iron Heights. The Flash arrived to stop the breakout where he used his super-speed to place Murmur back in his prison cell whereupon he tried to battle the other escaping convicts. (The Flash v2 #192)

Murmur and the Rogues would later hold a funeral for Captain Boomerang in Avernus. (The Flash v2 #217) He continued his murderous spree throughout Keystone. Heat Wave stopped him from murdering a young woman, but Murmur escaped capture due to Captain Cold’s interference. (The Flash v2 #218)

He was later shown to be working in Gotham City with the Riddler, the Body Doubles and the Fisherman in a murderous attack on Gotham police officers. (Infinite Crisis v1 #1) Murmur was shown as being a member of the Secret Society of Super Villains that participated in a large-scale attack on Metropolis. (Infinite Crisis v1 #7)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Overview

Personality and attributes

He took the name Murmur due to the murmuring sounds he used to make when he committed his murders. (The Flash: Iron Heights v1 #1)

Amar said he felt the need to stop the 'noise' which led to him murdering innocents in order to silence the sounds that bothered him. He did this by first cutting out the tongues of his victims. Michael could not be identified by his blood at the crime scenes as it did not respond to any tests. Ultimately, he was regarded as the killer that could not stay quiet which led to him cutting out his own tongue and sewing his mouth shut. (The Flash: Iron Heights v1 #1)

Powers and abilities

A curious aspect of Murmur was that his blood had anti-bodies that made him immune to almost anything. (The Flash: Iron Heights v1 #1)

He had developed the Frenzy that was a mutated respiratory syncytial virus that attacked the lungs and throat. It ate away at the flesh from the inside out where it turned it into a gelatin-like sludge that caused the infected to choke to death. Initially, the infected began to experience symptoms of sore throats and dry mouths as the virus progressed in development. One of the issues regarding the virus was that it mutated once it infected the human body that made the creation of a vaccine a difficult task. Murmur was able to tailor it to travel through different vectors such as putting it into the water supply to infect people. Due to his abnormal blood, he was immune to the effecs of his own Frenzy virus. (The Flash: Iron Heights v1 #1)

Notes

    • In Arrow, Murmur appeared in the setting of the live-action television series where he was portrayed by actor Adrian Glynn McMorran. Michael Amar was revealed to have been beaten into confessing to a crime he did not commit years prior for which he served in Iron Heights. He then proceeded to have his mouth sewn shut. After his release, he went on to seek revenge against the police by stealing diamonds to make diamond-tipped bullets which could pierce their body armor. His plan is foiled and he is subdued by Team Arrow. Later in season four, Damien Darhk is seen in jail with Murmur who has built up a gang in prison. Murmur and his gang beat up Darhk who in revenge forces Murmur to murder his gang and work for H.I.V.E by threatening his grandmother.
