History

The Orbs of the Prophets were advanced technological relics of the non-corporeal race of beings known as the Prophets who resided within the Bajoran Wormhole. (DS9: Emissary)

Over the course of 10,000 years, nine of these Orbs appeared over the skies of the planet Bajor with their existence shaping the theology of the Bajorans civilisation. Five of these relics were found within the Denorios Belt situated within the solar system. They came to be regarded as sacred relics known as the Tears of the Prophets with it being believed that they came from the Prophet's Celestial Temple. (DS9: Emissary)

During the Cardassian occupation, they managed to recover 8 of the Orbs that they began to study but were unable to discern their true nature. Unknown to them, one of the Orbs which was the Orb of Prophecy and Change was kept secretly in the hands of the Bajorans. (DS9: Emissary)

In early 2371, the Bajorans were in negotiations with the Cardassians to have the Orbs returned to Bajor. (DS9: Life Support)

Overview

Contact with the Orbs could lead to a person having an experience from their past being relived by them. (DS9: Emissary)

Each of the Orbs were noted to possess unique abilities such as the Orb of Time that allowed for time travel. (DS9: Trials and Tribble-ations)

Video games

  • In Star Trek Online, the Orb of the Prophets appeared in the setting of the MMORPG video game. On the Cardassian Front, players were tasked with reclaiming one known as the Orb of Possibilities from the True Way. However, upon returning it to Bajor, the Prophets inform the player that "what has been returned does not belong". It was then revealed that this Orb was actually from the Mirror Universe leading to the player travelling through a rift in the Badlands in order to cross universes and return it to the mirror Bajor.
