Biography

Origin

Inheritor of Mar-Vell's legacy in Captain Marvel v5 #17.

Phyla-Vell was the female child of Elysius and the Kree warrior Mar-Vell with her being the sister of Genis-Vell. (Captain Marvel v5 #16)

Her mother then contacted her to tell her that Genis had abrogated his responsibilities and thus she named Phyla the new Captain Marvel. Thus, she emerged as a fully grown, capable warrior when she confronted her brother Genis-Vell during a reality-altering crisis. Genis had reconstructed the universe in his cosmic madness, and Phyla appeared amid the fallout, stepping forward as both challenger and savior. With a sharp combination of courage and determination, she opposed Genis’s destructive rampage and helped restore his sanity, reclaiming the mantle of Captain Marvel for herself in the process. She confronted him head-on, wielding her natural Kree strength and energy manipulation, determined to stop his destructive rampage. Their battle was fierce, with Phyla showcasing tactical precision as she tried to restrain Genis, using both force and reason. Despite her attempts, Genis’ unstable cosmic awareness made him erratic, and the confrontation escalated into a clash that shook their surroundings before outside intervention helped to bring the situation under control. (Captain Marvel v5 #16)

Phyla continued to pursue Genis, refusing to allow him to unravel reality unchecked. She intercepted him as he attempted to manipulate the timestream, actively engaging him in combat again when persuasion failed. During this conflict, Phyla demonstrated both her martial training and energy projection abilities, lashing out with controlled blasts of photonic energy. Her persistence forced Genis into a stalemate long enough for others to intervene, and she played a crucial role in containing his cosmic instability, though the strain of constantly battling her own brother weighed heavily on her actions. (Captain Marvel v5 #17) Phyla pushed further into the fight against Genis, allying with Rick Jones to help anchor and stabilize the chaotic temporal fractures Genis was creating. Here, Phyla’s activity shifted from direct battle to coordination and tactical support: she engaged enemies that sought to exploit Genis’ instability while also assisting in channeling energy to contain the damage. Her refusal to relent, even when the scope of the threat became nearly incomprehensible, marked her as a decisive presence. Though she could not stop Genis on her own, her actions directly contributed to limiting the catastrophic fallout of his reality-shattering abilities. (Captain Marvel v5 #18) She later came to fight her brother Genis-Vell who was insane at the time. (Captain Marvel v5 #18) In the process, she came to help restore his sanity. However, she also tried to lay claim to the mantle of Captain Marvel but her brother Genis refused to give it to her. (Captain Marvel v5 #19)

Martyr

As Martyr in Annihilation: Conquest - Prologue v1 #1.

Alongside Heather, the pair went to Titan so that Phyla-Vell could visit the grave of her father. The two were then confronted by the Mad Titan Thanos alongside his compatriots Skreet. In the resultant battle, Phyla-Vell was easily defeated whilst Thanos took Moondragon hostage with him tearing off her ear as a message to Drax. The injured Phyla then sought out Drax where she found him on the planet of Daedalus 5 that was being targeted by the Annihilation Wave. However, the warning held no sway over Drax who was only concerned with his mission which was to find and kill Thanos with Phyla-Vell looking for a means of saving her love. (Annihilation v1 #2)

Phyla then goes with Nova and Star-Lord to lead a final battle against Annihilus, being saved at the last second by a massive energy wave caused by the just freed Galactus, which left only the three heroes and Annihilus as survivors. Ultimately in the battle, Phyla manages to steal away the quantum bands that Annihilus took from Quasar, weakening him and allowing Nova to finally bring an end to the Annihilation Wave. She is then seen re-united with Moondragon, and deciding it's up to her to become the new Quasar. (Annihilation v1 #6)

She was seen on the Kree fringe-world of Lamentis, helping with the rebuilding after the Annihilation Wave. Along with Moondragon, now her lover, they helped to defend a temple from raiders, wanting to teach that peace rather than violence was the way to go. They were attacked by a Kree Sentry when the Phalanx took over the War-Net. Phyla was the first to discover that the Kree Empire was cut off from the rest of the galaxy - as well as being told, by what she assumed were the Q-Bands, that she needed to 'Find the Deliverer. Find the Redeemer'. (Annihilation: Conquest Prologue v1 #1)

When Ultron faced trouble with the arrival of the Technarch also named Warlock and Nova, Phyla had a vision of Moondragon, communicating towards her from the edge of death itself, informing her that the barrier isolating the Kree galaxy has weakened and her bands are filling with energy once again. Though Phyla desired Moondragon to return, her lover urged her to help their friends. Joining the battle, Phyla returned Adam's soul to his body, once the Technarch Warlock forced Ultron out of it. Unfortunately, Ultron created a massive body out of 15,000 Kree Sentries that Ronan the Accuser was intending to use to annihilate Hala. Adam empowered Phyla with the souls of the Kree to give her the power to destroy Ultron. (Annihilation: Conquest v1 #6)

Guardian of the Galaxy

Phyla-Vell with her wife in Guardians of the Galaxy Annual v3 #1.

After the Multiverse was re-ordered, the Phyla-Vell and Moondragon of another reality went out in search of their universe's Reality Stone that now resided on Earth-616. (Infinity Countdown v1 #4)

She and Moondragon later answered a call from Star-Lord when he was gathering all cosmic individuals of Earth-616 for a gathering that would hear the last will and testament of the Mad Titan Thanos. Whilst attending, everyone learnt that Thanos had implemented a contingency plan whereby his consciousness that had been implanted on one of the people in attendance would activate allowing him to be reborn in their body. It was then that the gathering was interrupted by an attack from the Black Order and Hela who claimed Thanos's body in order to resurrect him. Everyone else at the scene then were forced to fall into a black hole in order to eliminate them but Phyla-Vell and Moondragon managed to escape by latching onto Beta Ray Bill who pulled all of them out. The survivors then joined Star-Lord's new Guardians of the Galaxy as they went about attempting to stop the resurrection of the Mad Titan. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #1) With Gamora having become a target in the cosmic scenario, Phyla-Vell and Moondragon chose to stay with the Guardians, whose main objective was to save Gamora despite her past actions. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #2) In their search for Gamora, they decided to travel to Halfworld. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #3) However, Nova appeared to warn them of Eros' own team of Guardians assembled to kill Gamora. Quill's Guardians were defeated, and the Gamora was taken to Eros. Coming to Gamora's rescue, the Guardians of the Galaxy realized Thanos had been resurrected in Eros' body instead, thanks to the machinations of Hela. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #5) The two teams of Guardians joined forces and succeeded in preventing the full revival of Thanos. Although most of the warriors chose to depart, Phyla-Vell remained a Guardian as per Moondragon's recommendation. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #5)

Gaining the Nega-Bands in Genis-Vell: Captain Marvel v1 #3.
Protector of the Universe in Annihilation: Conquest - Quasar v1 #1.

Phyla-Vell was not born with her powers but became them through a combination of artificial origins and cosmic heritage. She was the result of genetic engineering by Elysius, who artificially accelerated her growth. This made her a must-use human-Kree hybrid—accelerated in physiology and memory. She possessed innate superhuman strength, flight, the ability to project and absorb energy, and cosmic awareness—an internal sensitivity to cosmic threats and interstellar patterns. Though powerful, her abilities were grounded in raw genetic and cosmic phenomena rather than reliance on external artifacts. She demonstrated the ability to generate and manipulate photonic energy, projecting it in blasts or channeling it to augment her physical power. (Captain Marvel v5 #16)

She inherited the Nega-Bands that were Kree artifacts which channeled vast amounts of cosmic energy. These bands granted her the ability to manipulate energy for offensive and defensive purposes, including projecting powerful concussive blasts and generating protective energy fields. They also enhanced her physical attributes to superhuman levels, including strength, durability, and stamina far beyond that of an ordinary Kree. The Nega-Bands allowed her to convert her willpower into raw energy, enabling her to fly at high velocities and survive unprotected in the vacuum of space. (Captain Marvel v5 #16)

Quasar was able to bend and mold the various energies of her cosmic tools for protective and detention efforts. (Annihilation: Conquest - Quasar v1 #1) Able to throw up force fields powerful enough to stop whole armies, having once created a shield bubble with which to hurl a phalanx contingent straight into a star. (Annihilation: Conquest - Quasar v1 #4)

In order to rescue her lover, Moondragon from death itself. The cosmic entity known as Oblivion came to her while she battled the Dragon of the Moon. In exchange for becoming his avatar she was given new yet undisclosed powers that dwarfed her previous abilities in comparison. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #12)
