Biography

Origin

Precht Gaebolg (プレヒト・ゲイボルグ Purehito Geiborugu) was a male human who was born in the Earth Lands where he grew into adulthood. By X686, he had become a treasure hunter alongside his two close companions Warrod Sequen and Yuri Dreyar where they became members of the Sylph Labyrinth (風精の迷宮シルフラビリンス Shirufu Rabirinsu) treasure guild. Whilst working for the guild, the three treasure hunters deciding to journey to Tenrou Island as they search for an S-Class Secret Treasure called the Tenrou Jade. Upon arriving on the island, Yuri had wandered off leaving Precht and Warrod to search for the treasure with them discovering that it had already been taken. The two then went back to meet with Yuri had had encountered a lone girl inhabiting the island named Mavis Vermillion. They revealed the loss of the Tenrou Jade with the distraught Mavis sad about the symbol of her island being stolen. She told the treasure hunters that the likely culprits were the Mage Guild Blue Skull who had struck the island seven years ago and had likely taken the Jade. Mavis implored the treasure hunters to take her and her friend Zera back to the mainland continent in order to recover it with Precht along with companions agreeing thus leading to their journey back home. They returned to the port town of Hargeon where Precht was dissatisfied at the lack of treasure and that all they achieved was gaining 'brats' on the journey. He departed to seek out information on Blue Skull with Mavis accompanying much to his annoyance though the pair went to the local bar. The bartender claimed that he had no information on the guild with Precht ready to depart but Mavis noticed a slip-up in the person's denial where she urged Gaebolg to press further. When Precht returned to the bar, he was suddenly attacked by two men but he easily defeated the pair. It was then that all the attendees of the bar attacked Precht but he similarly dispatched them with his chain blades. The bartender then tried to trap them all with a set of runes as he revealed himself to the Blue Skull leader. However, Mavis had deduced the circle was faulty and managed to step out before it took effect where she used her illusion magic to intimidate the bartender into revealing the Blue Skull's headquarters. This act surprised Precht who came to admire the young Mavis for her skill and intelligence.

Armed with this information, the group headed to Magnolia Town that was the site of Blue Skull's base. During the journey, the treasure hunters came to bond with the girls with Precht even stating that he had lost interest in the Tenrou Jade and was willing to give it up to Mavis. The journey took three days and upon arriving in the town they witnessed it in a ruined state with a massive skeletal dragon perched over the Kardia Cathedral. A townsperson revealed that Magnolia's current state was the result of Blue Skull's presence in the city but he was killed by the dark guild's members who then turned their attention to the treasure hunters. Precht and his comrades managed to easily defeat the attackers but their actions drew the attention of more of the enemy. To escape, Mavis used her illusions to scare the enemy away but the Blue Skull guildmaster revealed the deception thus leading to a battle. In the resultant melee, Yuri was injured with Precht losing one of his eyes in the battle but the pair were recovered by Warrod who escaped into the forest alongside Mavis and Zera. Whilst there, they sought to recover and Mavis volunteered to look for some water for her friends. Whilst away, she encountered a mysterious man who had taught her magic and agreed to help teach her friends. During the training, the wizard commented that Precht had an affinity for several different kinds of magic. Once their training was complete, they were ready to attack Blue Skull with Mavis developing a strategy which they used to successfully defeat the dark guild. In the aftermath, Yuri recovered the Tenrou Jade with him being unaware of its dark properties as Mavis told Dreyar to drop it. Precht told Yuri as well but Dreyar refused to listen whereupon the Jade activated with dark power that blew he others away. Yuri came to be consumed by the relic whereupon the blue dragon skeleton above the cathedral came to life and sought to destroy Magnolia. Mavis moved to save Yuri herself with Precht saving from her being killed. At first, Gaebolg believed he had to kill Yuri to stop the dragon but Mavis stated she would save their friend and the town. Vermillion then used her illusions to create gold coins to attract Yuri and then used the spell the wizard had taught her called 'Law' with her falling unconscious as a result. Her actions saved Yuri but they learnt that the incomplete use of the spell led to Mavis never being able to grow again. Around this time, Mavis also learnt that the Zera that accompanied them was simply an illusion created by her mind. With the friends reunited, Mavis then decided to form a mage guild that she called Fairy Tail with Precht, Yuri and Warrod being its first members as Magnolia became the guild house in April X686.

Years later, the mages of Ishgar were called upon to defend their country and took part in the Second Trade War. During this time, Precht along with his fellow guild members participated in the battle where they were guided by Mavis who used her tactics to lead to victory. In X696, he was present for the birth of Yuri and Rita's son Makarov Dreyar who was named by his godmother Mavis. The guild were then shocked to see Rita seemingly passing away after the birth with Mavis fleeing guild house and disappearing from Fairy Tail. For sometime, the guild went out to look for her but there was no sighting of Vermillion and with her disappearance it was decided that Precht was to serve s the second guild master. A year later, he came to witness the wizard that trained him approaching the guild house with the body of Mavis in his hands. He threw the seemingly dead body by the guild house and revealed that he was the Dark Wizard Zeref whereupon he left Magnolia. Precht then examined Mavis's in desperation to see if she was truly dead and came to find that her heart did not beat yet magic power still emanated from it. He quickly took her body to the basement of the guild and sealed Vermillion's body in a Lacrima as he sought ways to revive her. He came to learn that she was subject to Ankhseram's Curse and determined that she had inadvertently killed Rita which was why she fled the guild. Gaebolg later told the guild that Mavis had passed away and he placed a fake grave on Tenrou Island to hide her true body as he formally became the second guild master of Fairy Tail. During his study of Mavis, he came to learn that there was a second life that came from her and he was shocked to find out that she was pregnant. He came to determine that Zeref was the father of her child with him ultimately deciding to deliver the child. Precht debated on the fate of the new born as he determined the child had great magical potential. Gaebolg ultimately took the new born in a basket and abandoned the boy in the mountains where the child's natural abilities allowed him to survive into adulthood.

Hades

Thirty years later, he came to determine that a combination of his attempts at reviving Mavis alongside her own immortality had inadvertently created a source of infinite magic. This led to the formation of a wellspring of Eternal Magic centred around Mavis's body with this potentially changing the entire world of magic. It's existence was a closely guarded secret with the Lumen Histore or Fairy Heart being hidden within the guild house. Eventually, Precht sought to leave on a quest into the world beyond and in the year X736 he decided to appoint the 40 year old Makarov as his successor despite the man's hesitation. Makarov attempted to dissuade Precht by stating that he was not fit for the job. However, Gaebolg noted that Dreyar showed love for his allies and that he felt that Fairy Tail could become a good guild. The two then parted ways and Precht departed for parts unknown where he secretly looked into the roots of magic. His travels ultimately led to him believing the roots of magic lay with the Black Wizard Zeref who represented the true Essence of Magic. He came to conclude that the mysteries lay in dark magic and he turned to the study of it where he began to learn countless new spells. Precht came to abandon his name and took the identity of Hades (ハデス Hadesu) where he founded a dark guild called Grimoire Heart where he began recruiting its members. He came to be responsible for raising and training his elite warriors that became the Seven Kin of Purgatory who were all taught different forms of Lost Magic that he acquired from the Essence of Magic. In time, his guild became one of the three powerful dark guilds of the Balum Alliance. At some point, he used the knowledge in the creation of Fairy Heart to develop his own ultimate power source that became the Devil Heart which was formed from his own heart. Hades was noted to had been the one to personally recruit Ultear Milkovich when she was a child abducted for experimentation by the Bureau of Magical Development. He promised to her the Ultimate Magic in the world which he said was the Arc of Time Magic allowing her to change the past by travelling through time. Thus, she worked for Hades where as a teenager she studied the Arc of Time and several years later Hades came to praise her for collecting so many books about this magic. Her studies came to learn about a spell called Last Magic but Hades dissuaded her from using it as he told her that it drew on the user's own time. Afterwards, he contacted Ultear following the destruction of the Tower of Heaven where she informed him via communication lacrima about the activities of Magic Council where he congratulated her on her work. He came to acquire about the activities of Jellal Fernandes and Ultear congratulated Hades over him acquiring one of the keys to Zeref's seals.

He was later aboard his airship where he discussed the plans of the Oración Seis with Ultear and that they should just ignore the actions of the other dark guild. Instead, Hades had intended them to eliminate some of the legal guilds. Afterwards, he was informed that Zeref had been found and that he was sleeping at Tenrou Island with the airship redirected towards the isle with the Seven Kin of Purgatory gathered around him. Upon arriving, he set about the ask of resurrecting Zeref as he had come to possess all the keys for his seal. At the time, the Fairy Tail guild had arrived as several of its members were participating in their S-Class Mage Promotion Trial. This brought them into conflict with Grimoire Heart though they did not know the true intentions of the dark guild. As the airship arrived, they were greeted by a giant that opposed them with Hades instantly recognising it as Makarov. He attacked their airship with Grimoire Heart responding with firing their magic cannon. Meanwhile, Ultear used her Arc of Time to repair the damage to their vessel whilst the rest of the Seven Kin of Purgatory were dispatched to the island. To stop the attackers, Makarov prepared to cast Fairy law with Hades similarly preparing to use his Grimoire Law to counter it with the clash of the two magics potentially bringing terrible destruction. This forced Makarov from casting the spell and he came to shockingly realise that his foe was none other than Fairy Tail's second guild master Precht. The shock allowed Precht to use his Chain Magic to force Makarov onto the island with Dreyar demanding to know why Gaebolg had fallen to darkness. This led to Hades simply admonishing Makarov for his childish view of good and evil with him berating him for his views. Makarov no longer considered Precht a friend but had no wish to fight his former master where he asked if he would consider retreating but Hades refused as he as determined to accomplish his goals. He admitted though that destroying Fairy Tail brought pain to his heart but he saw no other way forward. He then unleashed several attacks that injured Makarov and he beat Dreyar into the ground.

Though deceased, his body was found by the demon Keyes of Tartaros during his search for Zeref and he absorbed the soul of Hades. Trapped with the demon, Hades had no choice but to serve the necromancer whenever he was summoned by him. This occurred seven years later when his soul was used to fight Natsu, Lucy and Happy when Fairy Tail invaded Tartaros's headquarters on the Cube. After Keyes's defeat, Hades soul was released alongside all the others that had been held by the Etherious demon. However, rather than leaving, he decided to stand by Fairy Tail one last time and warned he mages about the true agenda of Tartaros where he stated that the Face weapon was not their objective. Instead, he urged that Makarov 'release the light' before Hades soul finally faded away into the afterlife. Several years later, the Alvarez Empire attacked Fairy Tail with the Spriggan 12 member Neinhart using his Historia magic to summon a memory of Hades to attack the injured Laxus Dreyar. Despite his wounds, Laxus battle the manifestation of Hades and defeated him where the Historia vanished following the defeat of Neinhart at the hands of Jellal.

Overview

Personality and attributes

By his old age, he was shown to be a tall, elderly man with long, slicked back white hair, revealing his forehead, a mustache, and a similarly long yet mildly thin beard, reaching down to his lower chest in many curves. After falling into darkness, he abandoned his true identity and operated under the name Hades.

When he was a treasure hunter, he came to meet Mavis Vermillion with him initially having a low opinion of her and considered her a brat that was wasting their time. However, in time, he came to value her talents in developing strategies and found her an asset on the team. In time, he came to see her as a precious friend and worked to protect her from harm.

As Fairy Tail's guild master, he was said to had been a great master who taught harmony to his guild mates where he led them to the proper path.

He was a calm and confident man who showed no signs of fear to his enemies.

Hades claimed a more enlightened view of the world which he said was full of things that could not be measured as merely good or evil.

Hades did not believe that mistakes amounted to life mistakes which he often heard from young people. According to him, true mistakes did not yield experience as there was no coming back from there.

Powers and abilities

Initially, Precht was untrained in the use of magic until he encountered the Dark Wizard Zeref. During his training, he discovered that he had an affinity for several different kinds of magic. He came to develop a technique whereby he could seemingly fire magic bullets from his finger. Hades was able to produce different kind of magical ballistic properties. These included piercing hits to hurt a foe or explosion ones that detonated upon contact where they formed a large explosion. Typically, he simply fired these magical bullets out from index and middle finger in rapid succession. Hades could also absorb a magical attack from another foe and convert it into dark magic.

Among the spells he knew included:

  • Chain Magic (連鎖魔法 Rensa Mahō) : this allowed Hades to shoot out long chains from his hand with a grappling hook on the end that was able to pierce the body of an enemy without hurting them. Once attached, he was able to grasp his foes and sending them flying in any direction he desired.
    • Grimoire Chain (悪魔の束縛グリモアチェイン Gurimoa Chein) : created long chains from their hands that were able to grapple to a target and could be used in combat.
  • Amaterasu (天照 Amaterasu) : Hades was able to create magical formulas in the air allowing him to achieve a variety of effects such as engulfing an area with a massive spherical shockwave. The strength of the spell was increased by the number of the formula with the higher number dealing more damage.
    • Formula 28 (二十八式魔法陣 Nijūhachi-shiki Mahōjin) : a seal that engulfed an area in a massive spherical shockwave.
  • Formula 100 (百式魔法陣 Hyakuchi-shiki Mahōjin) : a powerful spell that created a rippling shockwave that damaged several sections of an island and could be heard across its landmass.
  • Grimoire Law (グリモアロウ Gurimoa Rō) : a spell that was a dark magic variant of Fairy Law and if used against its good counterpart it was said to bring about terrible destruction.
  • Katsu (喝 Katsu) : a spell with an unknown effect but said to be deadly and could kill a foe if used against them.
  • Demon's Eye (悪魔の眼 Akuma no Me) : a form of Eye Magic that was centred around his right eye that was normally covered by an eyepatch. When awakened, he could activate it thus releasing a large amount of magic power and he could use it to unleash the Abyss of Magic. It enhanced his powers even further where it created a dark aura that gradually increased in strength which could terrify his enemies. With the Demon's Eye, he could wield the Black Arts (黒魔法 Kuro Mahō) whereby he could enact spells from the Books of Zeref with Hades able to use Living Magic (生活魔法 Seikatsu Mahō) that could bring things to life under his control. The height of this was the ability to cast the spell Nemesis (裏魔法・天罰 ネメシス Ura Mahō : Tenbatsu (Nemeshisu)) that allowed him to create numerous powerful Demons that could perform damaging long-ranged attacks through the use of dark, tendril-like protrusions and shoot out orb-based attacks.

He was familiar with Requip (換装 Kansō) allowing him to use spatial magic to change his clothing attire. A great source of magical power was Hades own heart that he encased within a machine that he called the Devil's Heart (悪魔の心臓 Akuma no Shinzō). The generator was responsible for his massive physical and magical abilities along with augmented his lifespan. Thus, it was considered his greatest asset and he kept it within the mobile airship of his guild.

He came to establish his own dark guild that he came to call Grimoire Heart (悪魔の心臓グリモアハート Gurimoa Hāto). Their base of operations was an airship that was armed with a magical weapon that was the Magical Convergent Cannon: Jupiter (魔法集束砲 ジュピター Mahō Shūsoku Hō: Jupitā).
