Biography

Origin

Red Volcano was a male earth elemental styled android that was created by Professor Ivo and patterned on T.O. Morrow's creations such as the Red Tornado. (Red Tornado v2 #1) He was eventually awakened and broke free from the earth to explore the planet. (DC Universe v1 #0) In the course of months, he came to grow stronger and sought to learn more of his origins. To accomplish that, he intended to find T.O. Morrow and quiz him about the other androids that were like him. He came to learn that Morrow was kept imprisoned at the Belle Reve penitentiary in Louisiana and made his way to the prison. Confronting T.O. Morrow, he forc the human to reveal the existence of other elemental androids with the first being Red Torpedo who represented water whilst Red Tornado embodied air. Pushing the matter further, Red Volcano came to learn of a third which was Red Inferno who was a boy-sized android whose powers were still dormant at the time. (Red Tornado v2 #1)

Volcano lacks the humanity or conscience that his "siblings" have, going so far as to torture his creator into revealing the whereabouts of the other two robots. When Morrow tells him where the Red Inferno is, the Volcano heads for the child robot's home neighborhood and mercilessly murders the Inferno's adopted parents and destroys the entire neighborhood. He then takes the distraught Inferno with him into the atmosphere, telling him that the government was responsible for killing his parents in order to get him to destroy orbiting satellites and wreak havoc.

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Red Volcano was one of the inmates imprisoned in Stryker's Island Penitentiary when Parasite started a prison riot. He escaped from his cell after Parasite escaped by copying Mammoth and joined forces with fellow inmate Doctor Phosphorus in order to break into a room containing Green Arrow and several prison guards to kill them but they were quickly dispatched by the bow-wielding vigilante. (Green Arrow v6 #41)

Television

Red Volcano in Young Justice.
  • In Young Justice, Red Volcano appeared in the setting of the animated television series starting from the episode "Humanity" where he was voiced by actor Jeff Bennett. He was built by T.O. Morrow after the repeated failures in other android creation. This version was meant to be devoid of any concern for humanity and without any desire to become human. At this point, his brothers Red Tornado and Red Torpedo with his sister Red Inferno were under Morrow's control. Following activation, Red Volcano killed his 'father' Morrow only to discover it to be an android. Despite the setback, he proceeded with the plan in starting a global extinction event by triggering a Stage 3 explosion of a volcano. However, by this time, the Team had tracked down their friend Red Tornado leading to a battle with the villainous android. In order to stop him, both Red Inferno and Red Torpedo attack by forcing themselves as well as their villainous brother into a pool of lava thus destroying him before he could achieve his goal. He reappears in the episode "Runaways" where he was rebuilt and secretly dispatched by Lex Luthor to attack S.T.A.R. Labs at Taos, New Mexico in order to recover the parts of AMAZO. Not all the parts were there but the recently created metahumans Virgil Hawkins, Asami Koizumi and Ed Dorado Junior were at the scene leading to a fight with the android. Red Volcano later battled Blue Beetle where the hero destroyed the mechanical supervillain.
