One day, he was approached by superpowered individuals where he attacked them only to find out that they were with the 50-State Initiative. They came to recruit Reptil for a mission to stop the villainous Stegron who was striking at various locations throughout the country. This saw him going to Camp Hammond where he underwent testing and training before being sent on the field on an Avengers team under Tigra. Reptil was desperate to prove himself as a hero as he thought that this would help him find his parents. Using his powers, they came to discover that Stegron was in South Dakota where they battled him but the Dinosaur Man managed to defeat the heroes with ease. Humbertro was injured during the fight but made a quick recovery due to his superhuman physiology. Reptil was down from the defeat but Tigra came to keep his spirits up leading to him joining the team again as they confronted Stegron who was attacking a S.H.I.E.L.D. regional base in Wyoming. With Stegron distracted in the fight, Reptil was able to turn some of the dinosaurs in his army against him and helped in defeating the Dinosaur Man. They then discovered Stegron's true motivation which was to find Moon-Boy and rescue him as he had been taken from the Savage Land by S.H.I.E.L.D. for study. His kidnapping meant that his companion Devil Dinosaur had fallen into a depression and was going to die from starvation with Stegron looking to re-unite the pair. Reptil felt what S.H.I.E.L.D. was doing was wrong and managed to convince Tigra to allow him to free Moon-Boy in secret where he helped take him back to the Savage Land with the help of Ka-Zar. (Avengers: The Initiative Featuring Reptil v1 #1)

Reptil continued to try and push his powers to their limits, but remained unable to fully transform into a dinosaur until he lost control during a battle with Mentallo. Wasp theorized Reptil's repressed emotional turmoil was preventing him from accessing his full potential. During a one on one conference with Jessica Jones, Reptil finally began to discuss some of his emotional problems surrounding his parents and Osborn. He was then chosen to be the leader of the superhero class at Avengers Academy. (Avengers Academy v1 #6)

While the Avengers Academy temporarily closed during the war between the Avengers and X-Men, Reptil and White Tiger travelled to Florida to meet with Jennifer Kale of A.R.M.O.R. to receive insight about their magical artifacts. (Avengers Academy v1 #34)

Reptil was among the sixteen young super heros kidnapped by Arcade to battle to the death in his new Murderworld. (Avengers Arena v1 #1) To prevent suspicion, Arcade made Repitl's disappearance look like he had left to search for his parents. (Avengers Arena v1 #13)

Humberto slowly recovered as he, Hazmat, and X-23 trekked to Arcade's safe zone until Hazmat accidentally set off a Trigger Scent bomb. Reptil and Hazmat narrowly escaped X-23's rampage. (Avengers Arena v1 #6)

Reptil collapsed on a safe zone beach with Hazmat. The pair remained there for two weeks while Reptil recovered. It wasn't until Nico's spell sent Nara, Anachronism, Bloodstone, Cammi, and X-23 to their location, that the pair left, deciding to aid in battling to stop Apex and Arcade. (Avengers Arena v1 #11)

Lopez acquired near-fatal injuries rescuing his fellow Murder World survivors from Hazmat's nuclear detonation. (Avengers Arena v1 #18)

Later on, Reptil, fully recuperated from the radiation, was shown sparring with Striker after having joined Leonardo da Vinci's new program intended to take the place of the now-defunct S.H.I.E.L.D. (Invincible Iron Man v1 #600)

Later on, the Earth came under attack from an army of Symbiotes headed by their god Knull. He came to envelop the planet with the parasites with New York City coming under attack with Reptil being among the heroes attempting to save the people. During this time, he was helping a woman get back to her home on Staten Island with Spider-Man helping him. In this time, they found a ferry that was under attack from a Symbiote dragon where the two decided to help the people on it. This involved Humberto turning into a giant aquatic dinosaur where he dragged the creature into the waters though was injured in the fight but this allowed Spider-Man to create an electric harpoon to destroy the monster. The two heroes then continued working together as they fought the Symbiote dragons that were attacking the city. (King in Black: Spider-Man v1 #1)

Afterwards, Humberto had seemingly abandoned the life of being a superhero after his grandfather Vincente became unwell. To help care for him, the pair moved to his aunty Glo's place in Los Angeles as she was a doctor. Thus, he began to stay with them during a time when being a teenage superhero was illegal under Kamala's Law that made it grounds for arrest by C.R.A.D.L.E. to operate without registration or an older mentor. Whilst in town, they come under attack from a villain named Monolith who was looking to claim the amulet from Reptil thus forcing him to use his powers to fight him off and save innocent bystanders.
