Biography

Origin

Rocket

Complications later emerged involving Barry Bauman who was an alpha-class human psychic from Earth named the Star-Thief. He was able to jump from one host body to another where he used his powers to create riots on Halfworld. Rocket Raccoon managed to lock him in the deepest levels of the asylum world where only he had the key to prevent Bauman's escape. To prevent Bauman from ever breaking out, Rocket decided to leave Halfworld where he had his memories wiped to forget all his former adventures on the world. All he had were half-memories to hide the bitter truth of his experience then. (Annihilators v1 #3)

One day the planet was visited by the Hulk, who helped Rocket and Wal recover Lylla, who had been kidnapped along with Gideon's Bible by Judson Jakes. His chief scientist, Pyko, read and deciphered the Bible. Pyko knew that the Hulk's prodigious strength would give the opposition a great advantage, so he convinced the Hulk to return home to Earth and provided the means of teleportation. Meanwhile, Rocket got the drop on Jakes and rescued Lylla. (Incredible Hulk v1 #271)

In this new setting, Judson started a toy war with his competitor Lord Dyvyne by murdering his chief scientist. In return, Dyvyne reported him to Rocket so that the two of them would finish each other off and he would be free to marry Lylla and inherit her riches. As Rocket flew off to interview Jakes, Jakes' chief scientist Pyko stole the Gideon Bible to continue reading it; he had been interrupted the last time. When Lylla saw this, she was kidnapped by Blackjack O'Hare and his Black Bunny Brigade, a group of mercenaries working for Dyvyne. Rocket and Wal Rus started fighting Jakes' psycho-circus, but they were interrupted by the reveal that Lylla had been kidnapped. (Rocket Raccoon v1 #1) As Rocket ran off in his rocket boots after Lylla, both companies aimed to kill him, and in the middle of all this Blackjack went rogue and decided he wanted Lylla for himself, since he was the one who went through the trouble of kidnapping her. He was attacked by both companies, and soon found himself the only Black Bunny left. Left with no options, he decided to join forces with Rocket. (Rocket Raccoon v1 #2)

In this rebound, he met Otta, who had come to the rimworlds looking for adventure — the kind the straight-laced semiaquatic saps of Tarka's World could not give her. She played the broken heartstrings of Rocket's heart like a Stradivarius, or maybe he played himself, just to hear something again; some nights it was hard to say. But he followed her willingly into her life of crime, of big scores. Of living in high-class bars or beach planets for a month, until the cash ran dry, and then back to the piggy bank for more. Rocket had rules — only hit the bad guys, the fat cats, the creeps. And zero killing. Nobody got hurt — until someone did. They were caught, and it wasn't for the scores, just a lousy Restricted Zone Infraction that got out of hand. True to her nature, Otta blamed Rocket for everything, and he was sent away along with Groot. (Rocket v1 #1)

Contest of Champions

Rocket became security chief, with Blackjack as his number two and Dyvyne as head of psychology. Initially the revised system worked well, and new patients from around the cosmos were safely admitted and treated, but problems arose with the arrival of alpha class psychic Barry Bauman. A villain known as the Star-Thief, his body had been killed by Warlock. (Warlock v1 #13)

Annihilation

As Rocket and Groot were in prison, they were recruited by the Star-Lord Peter Quill as the Kree needed a team for a suicide mission. The universe was under attack: Supervillain Ultron had reached the mechanic species Phalanx, taking control of them and upgrading them. They started spreading throughout the galaxy, infecting everyone with their mechanic virus and taking over their wills. They infected Hala's empire, and built a gigantic tower with which they created a barrier across Kree-space, sealing them off from the other empires. (Annihilation: Conquest Prologue v1 #1) Rocket Raccoon resurfaced as a member of the team chosen to accompany Star-Lord on his mission to stop a Phalanx infiltration of the Kree homeworld. While arming them, Rocket gravitated toward larger weapons and exceeded expectations. Groot acted as Rocket's heavy ordnance transport. Rounding out the team were Bug, ex-Micronaut; Deathcry, a Shi'ar berserk; Mantis, the celestial Madonna, and Gabriel Vargas, the latest Captain Universe. The team was given uniforms that dampened heat signatures and avoided technology, making them invisible to the Phalanx. (Annihilation: Conquest - Star-Lord v1 #1) Infiltrating Hala, the team accessed a sub-level the Phalanx had set up shop in, looking for the replication plant. When they were caught in a fight between Phalanx robots and Annihilation bugs, Deathcry went feral and Captain Universe was forced to kill her for the safety of the team. Being a rookie, Gabriel was left traumatized. As they were being swarmed, Groot stayed behind to allow his team to escape; Rocket wailed as his buddy sacrificed himself and they got away. Peter was cold about the whole ordeal; he considered everyone expendable. (Annihilation: Conquest - Star-Lord v1 #2)

The team spent two days running in circles. The drones knew what they looked like, so Peter came up with the idea of changing clothes with a civilian; his crew was multi-colored, so he was the only one who could pass for a pink-skinned Kree. When he had been made an honorary Kree, he had been given a special universal password; with it, he was able to access the computers and look for something that wasn't there before. Peter found out the Phalanx were doing large-scale insemination through an airborne nanovirus; they were using the Kree people as incubators without them even knowing it. Meanwhile, the wait was killing Rocket, who cleaned his weapons over and over, making his teammates wonder if he had any obsessive/compulsive behavior they should know about. Suddenly, Groot showed up, this time the size of a hand. He was a flora life form, capable of regrowing from a single sprig. Rocket caught many rides in Groot's shoulder, so now it was only fair he let Groot ride in his. Peter came back with the intel and they discussed what to do. After Groot said they should just genocide the inferior, infected Kree people, and demanded moisture to grow, Rocket responded by spitting on him. Afterwards, they were swarmed by maintenance drones; the Phalanx were purging the sub-levels of all life forms. Rocket used his super-smell to find a water pipe, causing a flood and buying them time. However, Captain Universe was forced to stay behind to let the others escape. The team reached the surface, but they were captured all the same; everyone except for Mantis. On top of that, all of them had been infected with the Phalanx airborne virus. (Annihilation: Conquest - Star-Lord v1 #3)

Guardians of the Galaxy

Rocket takes over as leader until they rescue Peter and save the Earth from an alien invasion. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #10)

After a Kree/Shi'ar War opened a Fault big enough to let the Cancerverse through, Warlock revealed he was actually his evil counterpart Magus, fighting for the side of Life. Phyla assumed she was the opposing avatar of Death, but both of them were killed by the true avatars, the Captain Marvel of the Cancerverse, Avatar of Life, and Thanos, Avatar of Death. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #11) Despite the strangeness of having Thanos as an ally, Rocket and the surviving Guardians led a charge inside the Cancerverse, where Star-Lord, Nova, Drax and Thanos sacrificed themselves to destroy the universe while Rocket and the rest escaped. (Thanos Imperative v1 #1) With the on-going War of Kings, the fabric of reality faced destruction with the conflict between the Kree and Shi'ar. Thus, it was decided that the Guardians were to be divided into two teams with Star-Lord going to help bring peace from the Kree whilst Rocket led the second team doing the same in Shi'ar space. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #13)

Afterwards, he came to be an employee of Timely, Inc. Associates. (Annihilators v1 #1) He and Groot were reunited and tricked into returning to Halfworld: there, he found that his memories of the place were mostly half-truths and deliberately crafted fake memories. In reality, Jakes and Blackjack O'Hare had worked with Rocket in providing security at Halfworld Asylum for the Criminally Insane; Doctor Dyvyne had been Head of Psychology there; and both the anthropomorphic animals and the automaton clowns were deliberately created to work at the asylum, as their appearance would calm the inmates. The crises that Rocket half-remembered had been caused by the psychic supervillain the Star Thief, who had been admitted as an inmate and used his psychic powers to turn the inhabitants against each other. Rocket had turned the warders into a biological "key" to keep Star-Thief locked up, and deliberately altered his mind and left Halfworld so it could never be opened - but he was tricked into returning by the Thief, whose mind had escaped into the asylum after his host body died. (Annihilators v1 #3)

All-New Guardians of the Galaxy

Later, Rocket settled on Halfworld, where he was watched over by Gamora, who intended to bury him after his death. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #4)

After the Infinity Wars, he began to notice a degradation within his body that was seemingly rejecting the modifications made to it on Halfworld long ago. As such, he was slowly dying and seeing no cure for himself he cut all contact with his friends as he did not want them to see him in this condition. However, a number of Guardians came to recruit him to help them rescue Star-Lord who had been captured by the Universal Church of Truth. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #8)

The Guardian's later took Rocket to Halfworld where his bio-modifications had to be removed and replaced with the surgery taking weeks. During this time, Nova came to them where he warned them of a new threat coming from the rogue Olympian gods of Earth who had been reborn as cosmic beings that were destroying entire worlds across space. Rocket was willing to aid Rider but Gamora and a few others simply wanted to be left alone in peace. Later, Rocket joined Star-Lord, Phyla-Vell and Moondragon in joining Nova as he assembled a new Guardian team to respond to this crisis. They were joined by Noh-Varr as they staged an assault on the god's mobile city of New Olympus that was travelling through space via a dimensional rotor. The Guardian's infiltrated the city where they intended to use Noh-Varr's Pocket Battlefield as a singularity bomb to destroy the rotor when they were beset upon by the Olympian's who learnt of their presence. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #1)

In the aftermath of the Cotati war, the galactic community built Proscenium that was a neutral space station where they sought to prevent further conflict in the cosmos. During the diplomatic conference, the Zr'nx Emperor was killed and a Kree subaltern from the Alliance was similarly murdered seemingly at the hands of Noh-Varr. To prevent Marvel Boy's execution, Rocket was brought onto the case to fight the true culprit who was responsible for the murder. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #7) He came to determine that the murdered Kree was actually part of a faction opposed to the Utopian Kree that Noh-Varr represented and wanted to trigger a conflict to eliminate their rivals. In this, he discovered that the Kree was supplied a weapon by the Elder of the Universe known as the Profiteer who had disguised herself as the Badoon Sisterhood representative. She intended to break down talks in the diplomatic summit in order to cause galactic wars so that she could sell weapons to both sides. She had partly succeeded in arranging for the death of the Zr'nx Emperor that triggered a Snarkwar where all the potential heirs battled one another to succeed him to the throne. Finally, Rocket uncovered that the Chitauri representative known as the Peacebringer contained a hidden bio-explosive and threatened to detonate to kill all the delegates. Trapped on the station, the inhabitants could not remove the Peacebringer before he could explode. However, news came of a cosmic threat rampaging across the galaxy which further devalued the galactic credit as the economy was no longer a concern as civilisations struggled to simply survive following the loss of several worlds. Seeing this, the Profiteer decided to aid the delegates as she could sell to them in the future once the universe had recovered and she teleported the Peacebringer away for study whilst the Elder looked to profit from the Snarkwar. Thus, the station was saved by the cosmos faced the destructive force of Knull who was destroying all worlds on his path. (Guardians of the Galaxy v6 #8)

• Rocket Raccoon was created by Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen where he made his first appearance in Marvel Preview v1 #7 (Summer, 1976).
• The character was named after The Beatles song' "Rocky Raccoon" with the title of the characters debut in Incredible Hulk #271 (February 9, 1982) being a parody of the song's opening lyrics.

  • In Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket appeared in the live-action film where he was voiced by actor Bradley Cooper. Rocket and Groot traveled to Xandar, where he staked out potential bounty targets in a crowded plaza. While looking at the many Xandarians, Rocket ranted about how absurd the people looked such as insulting a man with a haircut, a child walking with his guardian, and a suspicious person talking to a woman. As Rocket was laughing at the locals, he turned to Groot and noticed him drinking water from a fountain, telling him to stop doing that in disgust. After Rocket had caught Groot lying about drinking, he picked up a signal from device and spotted Peter Quill with Bereet. As Rocket looked over Quill's stats, he noted that Quill was wanted for forty thousand Units and told Groot that they were going to be rich, before looking at Groot drinking the fountain again in despair. Moments before Star-Lord had tried to set up a deal with Broker and Gamora attempted to steal the Orb from him, Rocket intervened at the attack and tackled her with brute force. While Rocket tried to tell Groot to capture Star-Lord, he began to yell at him for mistaken for Gamora, before he was bitten in the hand by Gamora. As Rocket told Gamora to stay calm, he was thrown away for several feet and landed onto an open glass store. Gamora then prolonged her mission to capture the Orb and went after Star-Lord before they fought each other. As Star-Lord had celebrated his victory of defeating Gamora, Rocket ordered Groot to capture him.
  • In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Rocket returned in the live-action film where he was again voiced by actor Bradley Cooper. A few months after their formation, the Guardians of the Galaxy were hired by the Sovereign to protect their anulax batteries from an approaching abilisk. They succeeded, but the batteries were to tempting for the kleptomaniac Rocket, and he pocketed some to keep for himself. After meeting with the Sovereign and receiving their payment, a captured Nebula, the Guardians took off in the Milano and began making their way to collect the bounty on their prisoner. Unfortunately, the Sovereign took notice of Rocket's theft and sent a fleet of fighter craft after the Milano. Rocket attempted to maneuver the ship past the fleet as Drax attempted to take out the Sovereign, but Quill and Rocket came to fighting over piloting the ship, causing much more damage to the ship that allowed the Sovereign to gain on them. As all seemed lost, a ship flew by and decimated the Sovereign fleet, allowing the Milano to make an emergency crash landing on the nearby planet Berhert where Rocket could work on repairs for the ship. Before long, the ship that had saved them touched down on Berhert, and its pilot introduced himself as Ego, a Celestial who declared he was Peter Quill's father and Quill was half-Celestial himself. Ego invited Quill to accompany him to his home, and so they left with Drax and Gamora, leaving Rocket to repair the ship and look after Groot and Nebula.
