Biography

Sharon Carter

One of her first major assignments as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the transport of a powerful explosive called Inferno-42 that she was to collect from a fellow operative and deliver to a safe site. In her civilian guise, she made the journey when she was intercepted by Batroc the Leaper who was a mercenary working on behalf of THEM to capture the item. He managed to take the item but was confronted by Captain America with Carter able to recover the Inferno-42 and she fled to a S.H.I.E.L.D. safe house. (Tales of Suspense v1 #75) Exposure to Inferno-42 though caused her to pass-out as the substance threatened to explode with this being stopped by Captain America. By this point, an ambulance had arrived at the scene to take Carter away for treatment. (Tales of Suspense v1 #76)

Carter was assigned to be the S.H.I.E.L.D. liaison to the New York City Police Department while both organizations investigated the subversive group called the National Force, which was secretly controlled by Doctor Faustus. Carter fell under the thrall of Faustus' mind-influencing gas during a rally in Central Park, and she was abducted with the others by the National Force's Grand Director, who had also been the fourth Captain America. Carter and others in the group were coerced to march on New York City's Harlem area to burn it down. When confronted by the National Guard, the mesmerized Carter in accordance with the orders given by Faustus activated a self-destruct device in her costume and was believed incinerated with other members of the rally. (Captain America v1 #237) It was later revealed that Carter's death was staged by S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury, so that Carter could go on to perform an even more dangerous assignment. However, something went wrong and Carter was believed dead by S.H.I.E.L.D. and left abandoned behind enemy lines. She ended up joining with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s enemies out of resentment toward Fury, and even went on to become an agent of the Red Skull. However, when Captain America defeated the Skull's plans the two were reunited and Carter returned home. (Captain America v1 #446)

Still wishing to confront Nick Fury, Carter learned not only that Fury was believed dead killed by the vigilante known as the Punisher but that his death and funeral were staged. Carter surreptitiously infiltrated the agency to investigate, only to find herself pursued by S.H.I.E.L.D. and wanted for treason. To avoid capture, Carter was forced to escape through an energy portal she found in an abandoned S.H.I.E.L.D. safe-house. There, she found herself in Nazi territory during World War II, where she encountered Nick Fury (Fury/Agent 13 v1 #1) Fury had found documents which questioned the fate of his predecessor, the S.H.I.E.L.D. director code-named Fallen Angel, whom he had believed was killed by agents of Hydra. In fact, he was abandoned by S.H.I.E.L.D. after Hydra kidnapped him. Fury set about tracking the Fallen Angel, but as the situation was politically volatile, Fury diverted attention from his investigation by staging his own death. His search led him to the "Backslide," a supposedly abandoned S.H.I.E.L.D. project which created a portal from a fabricated Cosmic Cube. Ultimately, the Fallen Angel hoped Fury might use the portal to go back in time, prevent S.H.I.E.L.D. from being formed, and thus gain revenge for his abandonment. Fury disagreed and he and the Fallen Angel struggled. They both ended up traveling through the portal, which did not lead back into time, but merely created a reality based on the memories of war from the two soldiers. Fallen Angel took his own life while Fury remained trapped, fighting a stalemate war for months. Carter's presence allowed the Backslide's reality to change, offering a way out. Together, Fury and Carter battled their way free, as on the other side of the portal S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were about to destroy the portal, since Fury was the only one who could open it. Carter and Fury managed to escape moments before the portal's destruction, although Fury disappeared in the explosion. (Fury/Agent 13 v1 #2)

In a follow-up, a sniper shoots Steve Rogers in the shoulder while he walks up the steps to the Federal Court. In the ensuing crowd chaos, Rogers is shot three times in the abdomen with a pistol, and later appears to die of his wounds. It is later revealed that the plan was orchestrated by the Red Skull; the sniper was Crossbones, and Sharon Carter shot Rogers in the abdomen while under a hypnotic suggestion by Dr. Faustus. (Captain America v3 #25) Sharon is still under the influence of Doctor Faustus, who uses her to disable Black Widow and Falcon before she joins the Red Skull's organization as a minion. She is apparently pregnant with Rogers's child, but she loses the baby during a fight with the Red Skull's daughter, Sin, during one of several attempts to escape. Later, Sharon says that she, not Sin, stabbed her womb and caused the miscarriage, to keep the Red Skull from getting his hands on anything of hers. Doctor Faustus makes her forget ever being pregnant, and he also gives her the tools to escape. Sharon frees herself, killing Aleksander Lukin in the process and narrowly missing killing the Red Skull himself, before being found by Black Widow and the Falcon. Iron Man and Falcon decide to tell her about her pregnancy at a later date, after sufficient recovery time. (Captain America v3 #42) As a result, Sharon decided to leave S.H.I.E.L.D. (Captain America v3 #43)

Afterward, Sharon Carter rekindled her romantic relationship with Steve Rogers and served as a part of his Secret Avengers team. (Secret Avengers v1 #1)

She came to find that Ian Rogers had in fact survived after he healed from his injuries with her taking care of the boy. They remained in Dimension Z for years where she came to be an adoptive mother to the boy as he grew to adulthood. By this point, they worked to sabotage the efforts of Arnim Zola where during one mission Sharon was captured with Ian believing that she had been killed. Zola had nefarious purpose for her where he kept her captive when he later staged an invasion of Earth using his mutate army. Carter was in Zola's tower that had made the jump to Earth as Zola intended to reclaim his daughter Jet. (Captain America v7 #24) The Falcon and Jet Zola came to free her from her prison cell but then made their way to stop Arnim. (Captain America v7 #23) Ian Rogers came to rescue her from mutates and was reunited with his adoptive mother. However, they learnt that Arnim Zola intended to detonate his omega bomb to kill everyone in the city after he recovered Jet. The bomb though was accidentally triggered early with Falcon seemingly having to sacrifice himself to stop it by taking it to low orbit. The Avengers then gathered to seemingly mourn Sam Wilson's death with Sharon reuniting with Steve Rogers in that moment. The heroes were then overjoyed to find that Falcon had miraculously survived as his Vibranium wings had absorbed the brunt of the explosion. Upon seeing Jet Zola, Sharon came to accuse her of being a spy for her biological father Arnim Zola as Carter had overheard spy reports to him. This led to the Avengers restraining Jet who evaded the heroes and decided she had no choice but to return to her fathers service whereupon they left back for Dimension Z. A week later, the world recovered and the Avengers gathered as the now elderly and depowered Steve Rogers named Sam Wilson to be his replacement as the new Captain America. (Captain America v7 #25)

Wearing the Iron Patriot armour, she aided Steve in the fight against the Mutant Selene Gallo. She managed to keep the target focused on her and angry till she burnt out the stolen life forces she had taken from innocent humans. Taking their fight to an isolated area, Selene was drained of her power leaving her old and withered allowing her to be easily captured. She was then sent to Krakoa to answer for her crimes before the Quiet Council who ruled the Mutant nation. Shuri managed to take an amulet from Selene that contained the stolen life forces of the deceased and with magic gifted their energies to Sharon thus restoring her to her young self again. (Captain America v9 #23)
