History

The Order of Purity were a splinter sect that separated from the Sacred Order of Saint Dumas. Despite its separation, it lacked the financial assets and the political clout of its parent organization. Its members desired to see their religion protected and thus crafted the Suit of Sorrows which was a chainmail tabard formed from the armor of one hundred violent Crusaders. This was with the intention of it being worn by their champion though all of them went mad either due to a blood debt to its original owners or because of a weight on their psyche.

The first knight to had worn the Suit of Sorrows was Geoffrey De Cantonna who later lost any distinction between right and wrong. As a result, the Order had to cover up his overzealous acts as the Suit had driven him mad. (Azrael: Death's Dark Knight v1 #2)

Vestiges of the Order managed to survive into the modern age with very few of them residing in Gotham City. As such, any time they were called they were required to respond to a summons. (Azrael: Death's Dark Knight v1 #2)

At some point, the Suit was stolen by Ra's al Ghul who later gave it to his daughter Talia al Ghul who in turn gave it to Bruce Wayne. Following the Black Glove's assault on Batman, the Order of Purity managed to breach the Batcave and retrieve the Suit of Sorrows. This was with the intention of creating a new champion to don the mantle of Azrael which later turned out to be Michael Lane.

Hans Herlicht of the Order was later seen working for Ra's Al Ghul and began bombarding solar radiation into the metahuman known as Fireball. This was with the intention of filling his body with intense energy that he would eventually release at a specified time and bring ruin to Gotham City. (Batman #708 Judgement on Gotham, Part One: One Good Man 2011)
