History

Origin

The Acolytes were a team of super-powered Mutants who were followers of Magneto. Originally, they were a group of Mutants brought together by Fabian Cortez who had led them in stealing a space shuttle to go into orbit as they headed towards Asteroid M. Once there, they met with Magneto and pledged themselves to his teachings of the superiority of Mutantkind and their dominance over normal humans. This caused some members of the group to even beginning to worship the Master of Magnetism with religious fervour and saw him as a 'Mutant Messiah'. Magneto decided to allow them to stay with him and he came to refer to them as his Acolytes. (X-Men v2 #1)

Cortez was actually a member of the Upstarts, a group of mutants organized by the Gamesmaster who were awarded points for killing other mutants. As Asteroid M plummeted towards Earth, the Acolyte Chrome used his powers to shield Magneto from harm. Thanks to Chrome's intervention, Magneto survived the crash, however all of the remaining Acolytes died. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #304)

Fabian Cortez's seeming elimination of Magneto established him as ranking competitor among the Upstarts. Believing Magneto to be dead, Cortez gathered a second group of Acolytes to unwittingly aid him in the competition by playing Magneto off as a martyr. Among his new recruits were Cargill, Unuscione, and the brothers Eric, Harlan, and Sven Kleinstock. This new team of Acolytes attacked a school wanting to secure an unidentified mutant boy. When they discovered the boy had Down Syndrome they judged him as worthless. After they killed the X-Men's ally Sharon Friedlander, they X-Men intervened. Eric Kleinstock was killed by Tom Corsi. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #298) The Acolytes then grew to Amelia Voght, Milan, Scanner, Senyaka, Spoor, Katu, Mellencamp, and Javitz. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #300)

The Acolytes split into factions on several occasions. When Exodus revealed himself and the truth behind Cortez, some refused to believe him and continued to follow Cortez, while most others followed Exodus. Upon Magneto's return however, Exodus 'cured' Rusty Collins and Skids from Stryfe and they chose to follow him. (X-Force v1 #25)

Looking to save his race, Exodus came to establish a new form of the Acolytes that consisted of the small few that retained their powers. These included Frenzy, Random and Tempo where they looked to take any new potential Mutants to a new Genosha that would be their sanctuary. However, for this, they needed a Cerebro scanner capable of scanning the world and finding potential Mutants before their powers manifested in the first place. Exodus came to steal the necessary knowledge from Cable's mind whilst his Acolytes attacked the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier whose equipment was used to make the Cerebro machine. However, they came to find that not even potential Mutants existed in the world as the X-Gene had been altered meaning that no Mutants existed nor future Mutants would be born meaning the current generation was the last. Angered at this development, Exodus and the Acolytes departed the scene where they went to the Antarctic to an abandoned facility as they allied with Mister Sinister who offered salvation for Homo superior. (X-Men Annual v3 #1)
