He was in fact a villainous figure known as the Arson Fiend who through a special chemical transformed into a fire wielding figure. Billy would later meet three other young men named Billy Batson, who went by the nicknames Fat Batson, Hill Billy Batson and Tall Batson. They were members of the Billy Batson Fan Club, and were eager to meet their famous namesake. Billy shared his secret about being Captain Marvel. The other Billys wondered if they’d have Captain Marvel powers if they said the magic word, but Captain Marvel warned them that great power was nothing to play around with. He gave them a thrill by taking them along to capture a gang of criminals who’d robbed the post office. Captain Marvel’s arch-nemesis Sivana recruited three other foes of Marvel, Biggy Brix, Captain Death and Herr Geyer to form the Vengeful Four. Sivana revealed that Captain Marvel’s secret identity was Billy Batson, and sent his men out to scour hotel registries so they could find and abduct Billy. The villains kidnapped Tall Billy, Fat Billy and Hill Billy, but failed to find their actual target. When Sivana learned that the Billys were friends with his nemesis he sent a ransom note to radio station WHIZ, demanding Billy show up at an abandoned saw-mill or his friends would be killed. Billy knew it was a trap, but had no choice, and when he arrived the Vengeful Four knocked him out and gagged him so he couldn’t say Shazam. Sivana tied all the Bilys to a log and started up the saw, gloating that he was leaving them to their doom. As they inched closer to the saw Billy managed to use it to cut through his gag, but when he said Shazam the sound of his voice was drowned out. He asked his new friends for help, and when they all said the word Shazam they were given the powers of Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel and his new Lieutenant Marvels Fat Marvel, Hill Billy Marvel and Tall Marvel spotted the Vengeful Four flying off in Sivanas plane and crashed through it, with the Vengeful Four seemingly perishing in the crash. Billy’s friends were overjoyed at being able to team up with their hero. (Whiz Comics v1 #21)

Afterwards, people in the city began to disappear in the night with numerous civilians missing with no sighting. It was then that Batson came to see the city under attack at night by giant bats with tail stingers that paralysed victims and flew away with them. At first, he fought them off as Captain Marvel but later decided to allow himself to be the victim of one in order to find the missing people. He was then taken to an icy cave alongside others and came to find out that the bats were working for the giant undersea Kraken of legend who would consume the bodies after the bats had drained them of blood. Billy transformed into Captain Marvel where he forced the bats to flee before freeing the other captives and then confronted the Kraken as it was attacking a ship where he threw the beast into a far off desert thus defeating it. Later on, the people of Dallas, Texas decided to throw a celebration in the honor of Captain Marvel. Upon arriving, the hero attended at the famous Cotton Bowl where a man named Dr. Foozle attacked him with a gun. The bullet could not harm Captain Marvel whereupon the scientist explained that he simply wanted to get the people's attention as he came to learn of the threat of the Mole Men who would attack the city. Foozle explained that these diminutive beings were the remains of a tribe that dug deep beneath the earth for refuge during the Ice Age and since then reside in Globa Lowmi that revolved inside the Earth's crust until it neared the surface. By this point, buildings began to disappear in the city and Captain Marvel took his human form to investigate the matter. Investigating a garage by a missing building, the structure itself similarly was taken deep underground where Billy was knocked out by the Mole Men. Taken captive, the Mole Men later came to take off his gag allowing the boy to say the magic word and become Captain Marvel. In that form, he effortlessly defeated the Mole Men and captured their leader King Diggo forcing his followers to try and rescue him. Whilst on the upperworld, they were blinded by the sunlight allowing them to be easily captured on the surface. Defeated, the Mole Men retreated and returned all the buildings that they had stolen from the surface. (Captain Marvel Adventures v1 #34)

Batson was later elected to become editor of his school's newspaper when a scandal emerged that his teacher Mr. Gilroy was accused of the murder of the Dean. Despite his reporters wanting to print the story, Billy refused and wanted to find the truth and uncovered that the janitor was responsible after he was caught stealing the school's welfare fund leading to his arrest by Captain Marvel. Afterwards, whilst trying his own chemistry set, Batson received a package from the Acme Chemical Company which was accidently sent to him leading to Billy returning it to the true recipient. The recipient was a Mr. William Watson who was provided Enzyme Y for his experiments on yeast to increase their growth for use in the industry. However, the enzyme caused the yeast to overgrow where it attempted to consume the city. As Captain Marvel, he helped stop the rampaging yeast after discovering its vulnerability to water whereby he helped make it rain in the city thus stopping the rogue experiment. One day, Batson received a radio call claiming to be from a planet called Dorth that was being ravaged by crime and requesting Captain Marvel to become their life time protector. Captain Marvel reluctantly refused as his duties kept him on Earth though he felt guilty for not being able to help. He then received a call from Professor Zynn who said that he had a solution. The scientist had created an artificial life form called the Silicon Man who was composed of silicon molecules with him having incredible strength whilst anti-gravity chemicals gave him flight. Zynn proposed that the Silicon Man become Dorth's protector but stated that his creation was clumsy and slow to react with him requiring training by Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel then went on a period of training the Silicon Man who was eventually ready to becoming Dorth's protector. It was then that Zynn turned on Billy Batson and captured him where he revealed that Dorth was a ruse as he simply wanted Captain Marvel to train his creation so that the Silicon Man could help him in crimes. Zynn commanded the Silicon Man to kill Batson but the time in training had turned the artificial being into adopting heroic qualities with him freeing Billy. The Silicon Man pursued his master to apprehend him but Zynn used chemicals that stripped his creation of his memories of being trained by Captain Marvel. Returned to his original state, Zynn commanded his creation to attack Captain Marvel who was forced to use his intense strength to destroy his former student much to his regret. Billy along with Mary and Freddy were all invited to the home of Sterling Morris where he decided to have a joke by scaring them in a suit of knight armour. The armour though was enchanted and sent Morris back into the past when a bright full moon's light touched it. Transforming to their superhero identities, the Marvel Family went back into time to 1400 years ago to the time of King Arthur in order to find and save Mr. Morris. Arriving in that time, they made their way to Camelot only to find Sterling Morris at the head of the Knights of the Round Table with Merlin revealing that he had created the enchantment to bring a person from the future to their time. Merlin revealed that King Arthur and his knights were away fighting in the Crusades but in that time the villainous Black Wizard had struck Camelot in order to claim the throne for himself. This saw Queen Guenivere being captured and to help rescue her Merlin used his white magic to send a suit of armour to the future in order to bring back a descendant of King Arthur. Thus, it was revealed that Sterling Morris was in fact a descendant of the heroic King of Camelot. Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel, Jr. then worked to help defend the kingdom from the Black Wizard's attacks. (Marvel Family v1 #70)

As Captain Marvel, he saved a helicopter that was about to crash when he encountered a mysterious being known as Zazzo who was a being from another dimension. The alien had created a machine that allowed him to channel the magic lightning whenever Billy called upon it to empower himself with this transforming the entity into a superpowered form that he called Zazzo-Plus. With all of Captain Marvel's powers, Zazzo-Plus intended to use his powers for fun where he caused a wide variety of mischief around the city. Attempting to stop him, Captain Marvel learnt that whenever he said his magic word that the lightning would strike the wielder of the helmet and attempted to use the power to turn Zazzo back to normal. However, the villain anticipated that and removed his helmet so that the lightning struck Billy instead turning him back to his ordinary form. Zazzo-Plus then captured Billy and placed a muffle mask on himw here he imprisoned him in order for the being to continue his campaign of mischief. After escaping, he was unable to transform so instead he went to the newsstand where Freddy Freeman sold his papers and stole one in order to make his friend believe he was a thief. This led to Freddy calling upon his power but it instead struck Zazzo who was turned back into his powerless form. Billy then managed to get the muffle mask removed where he turned back into Captain Marvel and captured the alien Zazzo where he discovered the villain to be a mischievous child who had run from his dimension. At that point, the villain's father Zazzo the Elder had come to take his son back in order to punish him for his misdeeds. (Shazam! v1 #19)

He was there at a news station when the Macro-Man attacked and transformed into Captain Marvel to fight the giant villain. During the fight, the giant managed to grab hold of Captain Marvel who was unable to escape and thus was forced to call the power of the lightning. It struck him turning him back into Billy Batson thus freeing him but had also seemingly set the Macro-Man on fire who apparently died. This made Billy Batson believe that he had murdered the villain and vowed to never become Captain Marvel again as he believed himself responsible for the death. (Legends v1 #1)

Unfortunately, he was in the middle of a fight with the Martian Manhunter who knocked captain Marvel unconscious after failing to realise that Batson had resumed control of his body. Captain Marvel had been doing Shazam’s work for four years. He lived by himself in an efficiency in Fawcett City, renting as the “Batson family”, and his inattentive landlord never noticed that he was a minor living by himself. Captain Marvel was having trouble in school, constantly being late or absent, because he was fighting evil. As he flew to school he saw his wealthy cousin Sinclair, son of Ebenezer, dedicating a new WayneTech facility. The villainous Ibac appeared, and set off a detonator that destroyed the building. Marvel saved his cousin from the blast, and a surviving officer inside the building. Sinclair was fascinated by Marvel’s resemblance to his uncle, and invited him to a dinner party. Billy went to school, and Uncle Dudley covered for his recent tardiness, telling principal Wormwood he’d been helping Dudley unload lunch supplies. After class Dudley followed him home, but suffered a heart attack. Billy changed to Marvel, and flew him to the hospital, and while near conscious Dudley called him Billy. Marvel realized the reason Dudley was constantly sticking his neck out for him, to facilitate his crusade. Marvel was ill received at the dinner party, lacking the graces of high society. After avoiding the attentions of Beautia Sivana, who was still enthralled with the hero, he made his way to the buffet table. The only real reason he accepted the invite was for the free meal, hard to come by for a poor boy. Shazam summoned him to the Rock of Eternity and scolded him for not taking his job seriously. Marvel let him have it, reminding him he was a kid with the responsibilities of an adult, and then some. He also lashed out at the wizard for not finding his sister Mary. Shazam told him that if he couldn’t dedicate himself to the job, he’d make him a child again, and took away Marvel’s powers. He returned to the party as Billy, and was about to be tossed out as an uninvited urchin, when a note slid under the door from Marvel’s old enemy the Arson Fiend. The Fiend claimed to share the same employer as Ibac, and told Sinclair he must die. A massive fire broke out, and Billy found himself powerless to help anyone. (The Power of Shazam! v1 #1) Blaze sent Billy a vision of all the people he’d failed to save. Billy had long agonized over his fear that as a child he wasn’t ready for the manly job of superhero. Sinclair snapped him out of it, and Billy remembered that as a child Ebenezer had him and Mary play in the wine cellar so they wouldn’t break his valuables. Billy knew the location of the dumbwaiter to the basement, and even though Sinclair still denied that he was family, followed him. Billy gladly destroyed one of Sinclair’s bronze statues to open the wall where the dumbwaiter was, and got everyone to safety. He was secretly pleased to smash things in the house that was his inheritance, and that he was never allowed to enjoy. Shazam realized how intelligent and resourceful Billy was, and restored his powers. As Captain Marvel he battled and disabled the Arson Fiend. Ebenezer had secretly hired the Fiend to garner more sympathy for his son, but the Fiend got out of control, and tried to kill him. Marvel was upset with Sinclair talking to a newsteam and taking credit for Billy’s heroism, but he simply accepted that his uncle and cousin were jerks. (The Power of Shazam! v1 #2)

In order to make ends meet, Billy changed into Captain Marvel, donned civvies, and got a scab job as a trucker at Raboy Industries. Gangster Pretty-Boy tried to threaten him for being non-union, and being on the docks while he was conducting business, but Marvel managed to get him to offer money to go away and sleep in his truck. He awoke to Pretty-Boy throwing “Muscles” McGinnis off the pier in concrete shoes, and managed to save McGinnis, who was actually an undercover agent. The gang he’d infiltrated, run by “Stinky” Printwhistle, was going to abduct a child, and when he balked they marked him for death. Billy woke late for school, and wa sin fear of being punished when he met Sterling Morris, who was having a meeting with Miss Wormwood. Morris wanted Billy back as a roving reporter, and Miss Wormwood agreed on the condition that Morris get him a tutor, and Billy keep up good grades. Billy emceed a statewide spelling contest, with finalists Percival Pill, Freddy Freeman, and Mary Bromfield. Pill won, but Billy took a shine to Freddy and Mary, and invited them to lunch. Sinclair Batson, Mary’s contact in Fawcett, told him to stay clear of the society girl. “Stinky” changed into IBAC, and abducted Mary and her caregiver Miss Primm, but Billy changed into Marvel and pursued them. IBAC was sick of being thrashed by Marvel, and eagerly engaged him in combat, but as usual Marvel defeated him. Mary said her thanks, and Marvel couldn’t help but think that she reminded him a lot of his sister. (The Power of Shazam! v1 #3) With Ibac in prison, McGinnis moved into his territory, and he and Marvel agreed to help each other. They staged a fight in McGinnis’ club, making “Muscles” look like a credible threat, and McGinnis dug up some info on Mary Bromfield. Marvel now had her adoption papers from four years ago when she was Mary “Smyth,” and there was no doubt that the younger picture of her was the spitting image of his sister the way he remembered her. Changing into Billy he found the Mr. Takwy-Tawny doll they used to love as kids, and he had a vision of Tawny coming to life, and telling him to give his sister the doll to jog her memory. Mr. Dudley came to his apartment, telling Billy he was tired of him ducking him, and that he knew his secret. Dudley was talking about the fact that Billy lived alone, but in a panic Billy admitted to being Captain Marvel, and begged Dudley to keep his secret. Billy went to the opulent Bromfield house, and was greeted by Miss Primm before Curly and his gang, who were still intent on kidnapping Mary, knocked him out. Mary wandered out of her room, and after seeing the Tawny doll she had a vision of Tawny telling her to remember her childhood, and say the magic word Shazam. Mary turned into Mary Marvel, and after Miss Primm freed Billy, he changed into Captain Marvel, and they went after Curly’s gang. Captain Marvel found that his powers were diminished now that Mary was sharing his magic. They rounded up the criminals, but not before the villains shot Miss Primm. She revealed that they had been blackmailing her because she was the sister of Theo Adam, the man that killed her parents. Captain Marvel told his sister they had a lot of catching up to do, but first they were going to visit the wizard Shazam. (The Power of Shazam! v1 #4)

Shazam and Captain Marvel summoned Mary Marvel to the Rock of Eternity. Shazam was in wonder that he’d scoured Hell itself for Mary, but it was she who came to find her brother. She admitted that she just wanted to be plain old Mary Bromfield again, but Captain Marvel insisted it was a good thing that she was a hero like him now, and that they were a family again. Shazam cautioned his charges that they were now sharing his power, so when they went into action simultaneously, their powers would be halved, and he told them not to take this lightly. (The Power of Shazam! v1 #5) Billy covered a baseball game featuring the Binder Marvels versus the Fawcett-Tech Trojans. Freddy Freeman played for the Marvels, and his hotdogging won the game. Billy was in awe of Freddy, he was popular, smart, good at sports, and a heartthrob for the young ladies, but Billy couldn’t be jealous because Freddie was such a good guy. Freddie’s grandfather invited Billy to the post-victory celebration of milkshakes and hamburgers, but Billy soon had to split, changing into Captain Marvel to pose as his uncle Eben so he could cash his WHIZ radio checks. Captain Nazi, recently pulled from suspended animation by his brother Wolf, tried to rob the bank. Before anyone could get hurt Captain Marvel saved the day, locking Nazi in the bank vault, giving the patrons time to remove themselves from danger. Nazi escaped, and commenced a battle with Marvel over the opean seas. Nazi was exasperated, his arrogance could not handle someone he couldn’t dominate, and when Marvel landed a punch that knocked him near a fishing boat, he saw a chance to retreat. The fishermen were young Freddy Freeman and his grandfather, and thinking Nazi a drowning victim, they helped him aboard. He flung Freddy’s grandfather into the sea, and snapped Freddy’s leg and spine before doing the same to him. Marvel caught up to Nazi, and was horrified by what he saw, but he chose to save Freddy and his grandfather instead of pursuing the villain, who escaped. At the hospital, Freddy was found to have spinal cord damage, and his grandfather had slipped into a coma. Not knowing who to turn to, he called Mary for solace. (The Power of Shazam! v1 #6) Marvel and Mary visited Shazam, telling him about their recently crippled friend Freddy, and asked him to share his powers with their friend. Shazam reminded them that his powers were not infinite, and that he had no idea how Mary realized to say the magic word to make herself a Marvel. They revealed that their stuffed toy Mr. Tawky-Tawny guided them along, and Shazam denied using an anthropomorphized tiger to do his will. The Marvels were confused, but Captain Marvel was sure that whoever sent Tawny, Mary was meant to share his power. Shazam urged them to find a solution for themselves, which Captain Marvel thought was an unfeeling gesture, and they left. Billy went back to his radio show, and Mary visited Freddy in the hospital. Billy broadcast a telethon, demonizing Captain Nazi, and asking for donations for Freddy’s medical bills. Sterling introduced him to his new tutor Beautia, who’d clearly volunteered hoping to get closer to Captain Marvel. Captain Nazi attacked Freddy in the hospital, flying off with him, and Mary and the Captain responded. Mart changed back into Bromfield, relinquishing her powers to Captain Marvel, who defeated Captain Nazi. The heroes used their Shazam lightning to get Freddy’s heart started, and took him back to the Rock of Eternity, where they finally realized that Shazam had given his blessing, but they had to be the ones to share their power with Freddy. By saying the name Captain Marvel Freddy turned into an idealized version of himself, tentatively named Captain Marvel, Jr. Shazam told him he now had the responsibility to fight injustice, like the other members of the newly formed Marvel Family. Although he was a demigod with Shazam’s powers, he’d return to being a cripple as Freddy. Freddy understood the drawbacks, and what was expected of him, and in his civilian identity Captain Marvel returned him to the hospital. (The Power of Shazam! v1 #7)

Billy and Mary came to cover a press conference by Fawcett Pharmaceuticals that were showcasing a new kind of cancer treatment. The drug was developed from a gland extracted from frogs with it taking a hundred amphibians to make three pills. It was then that goddess Heqt manifested on the earthly plane where she was angered at the treatment of frogs by humanity and planned to get revenge on mankind. Billy attempted to transform but was struck by the frog god whilst using his magic word thus turning him into one of her amphibians. Similarly, the other members of the Marvel Family were affected with Captain Marvel, Jr. stuck in a state of constant speed whilst Mary Marvel spoke incoherent sentences that were filled with gibberish. Captain Marvel realised that the only person that could help them was Superman with Captain Marvel, Jr. and Mary journeying to Metropolis to recruit his aid though the Man of Steel could not understand the pair. They managed to convince him to go to Fawcett City and use the magic word where he became merged with the power of Captain Marvel. They then journeyed into the realm of Heqt through her avatar where they convinced her to end her rampage thus returning everything back to normal. Billy was returned back to his own form as Captain Marvel where he parted ways with Superman with the two respecting the others aid. (Action Comics v1 #768)

Upon learning of Black Adam joining the Justice Society, Captain Marvel travelled to their headquarters to vouch for him as he knew of Teth-Adam's heroic past and believe he deserved a second chance. He arrived when Black Adam and Atom-Smasher were involved in a fight as the latter did not like the former. Captain Marvel attempted to defuse the situation causing Black Adam to relax his grip at which point Atom-Smasher punched him into the sky. This resulted in Captain Marvel moving in to hold back Black Adam who was angry at the attack where knocked his old foe to the side leading to a battle with the rest of the Justice Society. Their fight was stopped by Hawkman Carter Hall with Captain Marvel revealing the reason he had come which was to vouch for Black Adam but warned that the Marvel Family would keep an eye on him in case he ever gave in to the murderous personality of Theo Adam. (JSA v1 #27)

He later assisted the Justice Society when the grandson of the Shadower took hostages and wanted his grandfather saved from death. During the mission, he teamed up with Stargirl where Captain Marvel managed to help convince the new Shadower to release the child hostages. The young villain ultimately relented and surrendered himself into custody after feeling that he did not have to follow the same path as his grandfather. (JSA v1 #40) Captain Marvel then decided to stay with the Justice Society where he intended to help train the newer generation of heroes whilst also keeping an eye on Black Adam. Around this time, Billy began to develop feelings for his teammate Courtney Whitmore due to their similar ages. (JSA v1 #41)

After Kobra escaped, Doctor Fate's body was taken over by Mordru who unleashed his mystical might against the Justice Society with his allies emerging to aid him. Among them was Obsidian who used his powers to absorb his father Alan Scott in order to claim the magic of the Starheart. To stop him, Captain Marvel and Stargirl fell into the darkness as all three became lost within the Shadowlands. Whilst inside, Captain Marvel was cut off from the magic of the wizard and thus reverted to his mortal form of Billy Batson thus exposing his secret identity to Stargirl. (JSA v1 #47) Whilst inside, the pair grew close and shared a kiss whilst battling the creatures of the Shadowlands. The then went off to find Alan Scott who was seemingly deceased as revealed by the Shade. (JSA v1 #48) However, there was the potential that he could be saved by his daughter Jade and with Shade's help they returned to the real world. Billy's power was restored and he returned to being Captain Marvel but Star was captured by Obsidian who was prepared to kill Courtney. As Captain Marvel, Billy helped save her and he managed to injure Obsidian by calling the magic lightning on him. (JSA v1 #50)

He was then rescued by Stargirl after she was released by Atom-Smasher. With the gag removed, Billy could become Captain Marvel again where he took the other released heroes to confront Black Adam who was battling the entirety of the Justice Society. Captain Marvel then suggested a means of resolving the conflict as he could tell that Black Adam was not evil and that the people of Kahndaq viewed him as a hero for liberating them from a dictator. Thus, he proposed that Black Adam become the ruler of the country and its protector but that he could not take any further actions against the rest of the world or the Justice Society would intervene. Black Adam came to agree to these terms with the Justice Society allowed to depart Kahndaq. (Hawkman v4 #25) In the aftermath, Captain Marvel took Mister Mind away into custody but before that he met with Jay Garrick as the speedster had requested a private talk with him at Fawcett City. Whilst there, Garrick confronted Captain Marvel about his relationship with Courtney Whitmore as he believed this was inappropriate as she was only 16 years old whilst he was seemingly in his mid-twenties. Captain Marvel attempted to convince otherwise by the magic of wisdom told Billy that he could not afford to reveal his secret to others. Thus, he had no answer for Garrick and simply departed the scene where he met with Stargirl. Whilst there, he stated that he was quitting the Justice Society and that he could not longer be involved with her as though he cared for her he could not reveal his true identity to the others. Despite Courtney's pleas, he had made up his decision and departed with Whitmore being left in tears as a result. (JSA v1 #59)

Captain Marvel was later contacted by the wizard Shazam during a time when the Spectre had declared war against magic after coming to the conclusion that it was the source of suffering in the world. The Spirit of Vengeance had killed many magical beings with the Rock of Eternity becoming a future target. For this fight, the wizard made his preparations whilst asking Captain Marvel to help delay their foe until he was ready for their confrontation. (Day of Vengeance v1 #1) The two fought in Budapest where Captain Marvel looked to stop the mad Spectre but was losing their battle. (Day of Vengeance v1 #2) He was knocked aside easily by the Spectre but the Enchantress came to tap into the magical source that gave Captain Marvel his power and added her own magical reserves. She was then convinced by Blue Devil to make contact with all magic users around the planet to lend their might to Captain Marvel. This restored his power and even made him stronger where he was able to resume his fight against the Spirit of Vengeance. (Day of Vengeance v1 #3) He was able to continue their fight and nearly succeeded in defeating his foe but the magic being sent to him was cut off thus turning Captain Marvel back to normal. In his exhausted state, he was defeated by the Spectre and rendered unconscious whereupon the Spirit of Vengeance continued his quest against magic. (Day of Vengeance v1 #4) In the aftermath, he joined the other magical heroes at the Oblivion Bar where after recovering he made his way back to the Rock of Eternity. By this point, the wizard had completed his preparations and waited for the Spectre. (Day of Vengeance v1 #5) Later on, Captain Marvel confronted the Spectre as he approached the Rock of Eternity where the Spirit of Vengeance used his magic word 'Shazam!' to turn the hero back into Billy Batson. He then rendered the boy unconscious and left him by the side as he went to battle the wizard. (Day of Vengeance v1 #6)

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different series of events. Billy Batson was the son of C.C. Batson and Marilyn Batson where the couple got married against their parents wishes. (Shazam! v3 #6)
 +

 +
He would later be targeted by Felix Faust who was a skilled and knowledgeable sorcerer who had been hired to attack him as part of a distraction, Despite his power, Faust failed to make the connection between being paid to ensure that Billy was unable to speak, the existence of the Fawcett's local hero, and the Wizard Shazam despite knowing that Billy was somehow connected to the Wizard. During this attack, Faust pulled Billy, Superman, and Batman into Hell. (Batman/Superman: World's Finest v1 #2)

With his adoptive siblings, they set about exploring the Rock of Eternity and found a subway station connecting to the Magiclands. (Shazam! v3 #1) The group decided to journey to the Funlands where they encountered King Kid who claimed to be the long lost missing member of the Council of Eternity. (Shazam! v3 #2) King Kid explained the nature of some of the other lands and how they were nearly destroyed by Mister Mind years ago. He would then ask Billy to be empowered by the living lightning though Batson told King Kid that he could not choose him as a champion until he really feels it in his heart. (Shazam! v3 #3) After they mentioned returning home, King Kid had his clowns captured the Family and sent some of them to other lands while both Billy and Mary were taken to The Below to work as slaves of the Funlands. (Shazam! v3 #4) Billy tried to reason with King Kid, but after he refused Billy freed Mary and took away the gag they put in her mouth to prevent her front saying the magic word, once transformed, they both fought against King Kid and his army. (Shazam! v3 #5) Billy and Mary later attempted to go to the other lands in order to rescue their brothers but due to the battle between Black Adam and Doctor Sivana on the Rock of Eternity they instead got transported back to their foster home, there he finds out that his biological father has come back for him. His father explains why he didn't come back for him earlier while Mary reveals to their foster parents that they're the Shazam Family. (Shazam! v3 #6) In an attempt to rescue his brothers, Billy goes to the Rock of Eternity but ends up being sent to the Darklands where he was briefly reunited with The Wizard who had been resurrected, the wizard tells him that there was an impostor afoot and that he needed to reunite his family. (Shazam! v3 #7)

During their fight, Mister Mind revealed that he had taken possession of C.C. Batson sometime ago in order to use the man to establish a connection to Billy. This was ultimately with the goal of Billy empowering his fathers body with the magic lightning that could not be stripped from him. In their battle, Mister Mind gained an advantage with the Monster Society overwhelming the Shazam Family. Threatening Billy's adoptive parents, Mister Mind forced the hero to summon the Book of Champions and read from it to enact a spell to break the barrier separating the Magiclands. This was with the intention of merging them into a single realm with the worm ruling it all. After enacting the spell, Shazam came to notice a spell that allowed him to shrink in size where he enacted it to enter his fathers brain to fight Mister Mind directly. (Shazam! v3 #13)

Afterwards, Billy came to lose access to his powers after the Rock of Eternity went missing which meant that Batson's ability to become Shazam was unstable. This also saw the magic being gone from the Marvel Family with Freddy ending up in the hospital due to a neurological condition. At one point, Billy's powers disappeared whilst he was in mid-flight where he had to be saved by Jonathan Samuel Kent thus revealing his identity to everyone at Titan's Academy. (Shazam! v4 #1)

However, as his identity was a secret, this resulted in their relationship being a secret. Upon its discovery, it was deemed inappropriate as Captain Marvel was seemingly in his mid-twenties whilst Courtney was 16 years old. Thus, he was forced to stop seeing her and did not reveal the truth about his true identity as Billy Batson as the power of wisdom told him not to do so. Billy told Courtney that he cared for her but he could not reveal his true identity to the others for her. (JSA v1 #59)

Biography

Fawcett

Captain Marvel in Whiz Comics v1 #2.

Billy Batson

Whilst selling newspapers, he was brought into the subway by a mysterious individual and entered into a subway car that brought him into the underground chamber of the wizard Shazam. He revealed that he had been watching Billy for many years and had seen how pure his heart was which was why the wizard deemed him a worthy successor to his power. (Whiz Comics v1 #2) Billy Batson was later taken to Venus by Doctoe Sivana who was in a disguise with him using his magic word to become Captain Marvel. During this time, he encountered Beautia Sivana who was the Empress of Venus who had dispatched the numerous Venusian creatures against him which he defeated. (Whiz Comics v1 #3)

Later on, the world suffered numerous weather related disasters with Captain Marvel investigating the matter. He would learn that the storms were the creation of Dr. Sivana who had created a weather making machine with the intention of damaging properties so he could claim on their insurance money. (Special Edition Comics v1 #1)

Captain Marvel would face another plot from Dr. Sivana who had constructed a human-like machine called Z in the hope of defeating the hero. Though powerful, Z came to be defeated by Captain Marvel who learnt of his foe's mechanical nature. (Captain Marvel Adventures v1 #1)

Batson would detect signals calling for help around Saturn and Captain Marvel went to investigate. Whilst there, he encountered the alien Dragon-Men and though he was able to defeat them he decided to learn more about this foe. As Billy, he allowed himself to be captured and learnt that these conquerors from a world beyond the stars had enslaved a human-like race at Saturn where the survivors had sent the call for help. Turning into Captain Marvel, he helped the enslaved people rise up against the Dragon Men and defeated them alongside their monarch whereupon the hero returned to Earth. (Captain Marvel Adventures v1 #1)

Later on, Captain Marvel came to learn of a number of arsons where he helped save innocent bystanders. Looking for the culprit, he came to encounter George Tweedle who was an insurance salesman. The man would knock out the hero when he had become Billy Batson who then learnt that Tweedle was the person responsible for the fires. He was in fact a villainous figure known as the Arson Fiend who through a special chemical transformed into a fire wielding figure. After freeing himself, Billy would become Captain Marvel again where he defeated the Arson Fiend ending the threat posed by him. (Captain Marvel Adventures v1 #2)

He later journey to Central America to save Mr. Malcolm on his expedition when it was believed that he was trapped after awakening the ancient monstrous Mayan monkey-god Itzalotahui. (Whiz Comics v1 #22)

(Whiz Comics v1 #155)

(Captain Marvel Adventures v1 #75)

(Marvel Family v1 #35)

(Shazam! v1 #19)

In Whiz Comics v1 #41 (1943), a descendant of Billy Batson was shown in a future set in 2943 A.D. with this one being a teletator named Bilbat who when saying the word Shazam transformed him into Capmarv who lacked courage.

DC

Captain Marvel in JSA v1 #73.

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Captain Marvel later was one of the many heroes that joined the new Justice League. (Justice League v1 #1)

He was then captured by the Gray Man alongside Doctor Fate where the villain took control of Captain Marvel's mind. The Gray Man then sent him to battle his teammates in he Justice League though Billy resisted his control. This combined with the battle allowed Doctor Fate to free himself and thus forced the Gray Man to relinquish his control over Captain Marvel. Unfortunately, he was in the middle of a fight with the Martian Manhunter who knocked captain Marvel unconscious after failing to realise that Batson had resumed control of his body. (Justice League v1 #6) In the aftermath, Captain Marvel felt he could no longer continue his commitment to the Justice League as he had neglected his personal life and reluctantly handed in his resignation. (Justice League International v1 #7)

Afterwards, a conflict erupted amongst the pantheons of the gods with the Roman and Greek gods battling one another in Olympus. This saw the Roman gods taking control over Billy Batson and forcing him to become Captain Marvel to be their champion in the battle as he was forced to fight Wonder Woman. (War of the Gods v1 #1)

Post-Flashpoint

[[
The Marvel Family in Justice League v2 #0.

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different series of events. Billy Batson was the son of C.C. Batson and Marilyn Batson where the couple got married against their parents wishes. (Shazam! v3 #6)

(Shazam! v4 #1)

Overview

Personality and attributes

He was noted for being 16 years old by the time he as Captain Marvel had joined the Justice Society. (JSA v1 #48)

Whilst on the Justice Society, he began to develop feelings for his teammate Courtney Whitmore who operated as Stargirl. (JSA v1 #41) When trapped in the Shadowlands, his true identity was revealed to her after he was deprived of his powers with the two exchanging a kiss. (JSA v1 #48)

Once, he was ill-prepared for a test at school and intended to cheat using the Wisdom of Solomon but after gaining the power he instantly knew that such actions were wrong with him not using the power. (JSA v1 #48)

During his time with the Justice Society, he came to be romantically involved with fellow hero Stargirl Courtney Whitmore.

This could empower Captain Marvel to the point that he could grow to gigantic proportions as he became filled with raw magic. In this state, the concussive force generated from the impact of his fists was so great that it was the equivalent of small atomic bombs. (Day of Vengeance v1 #4)

At one point, he made use of the Eterni-Phone that allowed him to consult the Elders that provided him powers and get advice from them. It was a dome shaped device with numerous lights each of which represented a different Elder whilst the seventh contacted the wizard Shazam. It functioned by communicating back to their home at the Rock of Eternity. (Shazam! v1 #26)

Thus, those times where the champion's heart was torn on their loved ones meant that the power was similarly uncertain and divided itself amongst two groups of loved ones where it would swap intermittently. This was unless the champion was fully committed and that their heart was not divided. (Shazam! v3 #9)

He could summon the Book of Champions that contained all the spells written by the champions of the magic lightning. (Shazam! v3 #13)

 • In Future State: Shazam! v1 #1 (2021), an alternate future version of Billy Batson was shown to exist in Future State. By the mid-21st century, he was shown that his body was split between himself and Shazam with Billy barring the gateway from Hell into the mortal world to stop the demon words. Meanwhile, Shazam returned to Earth where he continued to operate as a hero but without his mortal host he began to lose his moral alignment causing him to consider more extreme solutions in handling villains that included killing them. In reality, he had been infected by Neron's influencing that caused him to see demons all around him with this leading to his corruption. During this time, he managed to get a shard of the Spear of Destiny which he used to murder the Spectre who came to judge him. This completed Neron's plan with Shazam calling out the magic word leading to an elderly Billy Batson returned to Earth. However, this provided the shard of the Spear of Destiny to Neron who used it to open a prison in the Rock of Eternity containing his master the Unkindness.
