Sho Fukamachi

Sho Fukamachi is a male anime and manga character who features in Bio-Booster Armor Guyver.

Sho Fukamachi (Japanese: 深町 晶, Hepburn: Fukamachi Shō) was a human who was born in the modern age where he lived in Japan as the son of Fumio Fukamachi (深町 史雄 Fukamachi Fumio).

One day, he and Tetsuo went to Lake Narusawa which was an old spot from their childhood where they often spent time together. Whilst there, they heard an explosion when a mysterious object landed near them with the pair investigating. As Tetsuo examined it, a trigger was sent and the device fell in the arm of Sho whereupon it activated thus encasing him in its substance. In a panic, he stumbled into the lake as the organism bonded to him and turned him into the Guyver. He then emerged from the waters where he found Tetsuo confronted by Gregoyle Zoanoid with him helping defeating the monster. The confused Sho came to see that he had been transformed into an inhuman being and he screamed in despair which was when the armour unequipped from him turning him back to normal. Afterwards, he attempted to understand the events that happened recently where he tried to return back to a normal life. They were then met by people claiming to be from the authorities that were investigating the incident at Lake Narusawa. However, these agents turned out to be Zoanoids who were looking for the host of the Guyver Unit on behalf of their masters at the Chronos Corporation. It was during this fight that Sho came to learn how to summon the Guyver which he used to protect Tetsuro Segawa and destroy the Zoanoids.

In the aftermath, Sho and Tetsuro discussed recent events where the latter concluded that Fukamachi was able to summon the bio-booster armor from another dimension when he called out to it. In this time, Sho looked to try and meet up with Mizuki but faced complications from student council president Agito Makishima. It was then that Sho and Tetsuro were ambushed within their school by two Zoanoids from Chronos. Dispatching the pair of Ramotith, Sho was surprised that Chronos had engaged in such an open attack at the school. It was then that Fukamachi encountered the newest threat from Chronos which was an inspector from the corporation named Oswald A. Lisker. He revealed himself to be another bearer of a Guyver Unit who went by the name of Guyver II. Lisker revealed the nature behind the Guyver Unit and told Sho to accompany him back to Chronos. Tetsuro advised against it which led to Lisker looking to eliminate the human witness but Sho intervened. This led to a battle between the two Guyvers where Sho decided to take their fight to the roof to avoid any further damage. However, Liskers greater combat experience and training showed him to be the superior fighter between the pair. He came to nearly overpower Fukamachi but then it was revealed that Guyver II's control medal had been damaged. This resulted in him freezing mid-combat and trapped as his body fought to maintain control over itself. Sensing an opportunity, Sho decided to strike at the control medal itself causing it to break into pieces. Without the control medal, the bio-booster armor began consuming Lisker's body as it began to dissolve with Sho using a mega-smasher to destroy the remains.

The next day, Sho attempted to return to having a normal life where he once again tried to meet up with Mizuki. However, she was still involved in meetings with Agito which frustrated Fukamachi. After school, Sho was walking back home with Tetsuro where he asked about Makishima's life. It was then that the pair were ambushed by Chronos soldiers with Sho quickly transforming and defeating them. The Chronos soldiers bodies dissolved after being killed but then the Guyver was challenged by a new opponent that was a Hyperzoanoid named Zerbebuth. Not only did this foe possess increased strength and endurance but was also equipped with bio-lasers as well as an acid able to eat through bio-booster armor. Fukamachi had to fight much harder against this foe but a complication arose when Mizuki was passing by and came to witness the battle. Following an injury from the Guyver, Zerbebuth decided to take the girl hostage and fled with her where he called for reinforcements after reaching a safe distance away. However, he was then ambushed by yet another Guyver who was the user that found the third unit. He came to kill the Hyperzoanoid and saved the unconscious Mizuki who was returned to Sho. Fukamachi had many questions about Guyver III who simply said that they would meet again and left the scene.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Sho Fukamachi was a young male human who had black hair and a slim build. After bonding to the Guyver Unit, he was the first actively known user of the bio-weapon leading to him being labelled as Guyver I.

Before his war against Cronos, Sho Fukamachi lived a very "normal" life, but he cherished everything about it and struggled to try and hold on to it even after becoming the Guyver. He is completely selfless and is always ready to throw himself into the line of fire when his friends are threatened. He does, however, suffer from self-doubt and tends to blame himself whenever something goes wrong.

He fights Kronos more in order to protect friends and family than from any need to see the enemy brought to justice. Had he not become host for a Guyver Unit, he probably would have happily continued in ignorance of Kronos.

According to Agito, his emotional makeup showed that he had a strong attachment to daily life where he wanted a peaceful existence alongside friends and family. This was described as being a very human characteristic with him fighting for this everyday life that people tended to take for granted.

Sho was the son of Fumio Fukamachi who was a widower whose wife had died when their son was very young. During his mother's funeral, Sho was said to had been quiet the entire time until after everyone had left whereupon he had cried intensely for her.

He happened to be a close friend of the Segawa family. In fact, his best friend happened to be Tetsuro Segawa with the two often spending a lot of time together. He also had a longstanding crush on Mizuki Segawa who was the younger sister of Tetsuro.

Powers and abilities

Originally, Fukamachi was an ordinary human who was in high school with no special training. After his encounter with the Guyver Unit, he came to be a host to the bio-booster armour and organism giving him superhuman abilities. Upon being bonded to the Guyver, the organism came to reside in his body where he could equip or unequip it at will with him shouting the word Guyver for it to encase his body. It was said that the armor simply resided in another dimension where it manifested around him upon being summoned. A central component to the Guyver was the control medal that resided in the forehead of its host. The core of the Guyver armour was responsible for regulating power output and controlling transformation. Removal of the control medal from the Guyver's skull will result in the suit's power overloading, causing the armour and host to disintegrate. In other words, the Guyver would end up eating its own user as a result.

On the Guyver's head, there were two metallic sensor orbs that could detect distant sounds and movements. This increased Sho's sense of awareness of his surroundings alerting him to any dangers to him and others. Not only was it able to detect threats not visible but also helped him respond quicker by using the Guyver's other abilities.

It was shown that the Guyver had incredible levels of regenerative power. The bio-booster armor was able to heal very quickly, even from wounds normally fatal to other humans. In fact, even if the Guyver should die, as long as the control medal was intact and still possessed a fraction of its host's DNA, it could even reconstruct the host and maintain their memories up until the point of death.

The Guyver came to Sho's strength to superhuman levels making him many times stronger than the average person. In fact, he was shown to be physically more powerful than average Zoanoids before able to easily overpower a Gregoyle. It was shown that the Guyver came to struggle against certain stronger Hyperzoanoids.

From his forearms, the Guyver could extend High-Frequency Blades that vibrated at intense frequencies that destabilize the molecular cohesion of the objects they contact then cut through them. This makes them capable of slicing through virtually any solid object.

On his forehead, Sho was able to shoot out his head beam that was fine laser beam fired from a small gem above the control medal. These were capable of burning through solid steel and able to kill more lightly armored foes or injure them. With fine control, it was shown a head beam blast was able to intercept bullets and destroy them before hitting their target.

When he initially transformed into the Guyver, Sho was unconscious from the trauma of having the Unit forcibly bond itself to him. However, the Guyver itself was able to deal with the threat of the Zoanoids that had been disbatched to retrieve the lost Guyver Unit. Once Sho awakened from the fugue-like state that he had entered while bonding to the Unit, he was initially terrified of the armor that he found himself wearing, as well as its capacity for sheer destruction.

These feelings lead to him rejecting the armor, which in turn caused the armor itself to retreat from him and store itself in the sub-dimension that the armor resides in when not in use.

From the Relic, he came to possess a greater form of bio-armor where he wielded the Guyver Gigantic. It was formed from the substance of the destroyed Creator's bio-ship where his biological and neurological essence merged with it. Within the Chrysalis, he came to yearn for greater power to be able to fight the more powerful foes he was facing at the time. After sometime, this came to form a larger suit that formed around his Guyver with this being the Guyver Gigantic that had far greater abilities.

• In The Guyver: Bio-Booster Armor, Sho Fukamachi was a 1989 Japanese original video animation series where he was voiced by Japanese actor Takeshi Kusao whilst English actor Tom Fahn voiced him in the dub version. Liker superior combat training allowed him to nearly overpower Fukamachi who barely escaped alongside Tetsuo after damage to Lisker's Guyvers control medal caused his opponent to stall in the midst of the fight. Sho was able to gain back the upper hand and kill him on the very same day he made his attack on the high school Sho, Tetsuro and Mizuki attended. With Lisker dead, and even knowing what would befall him if his Control Medal were ever to be removed, Sho attempted to return to his normal life. His next day at school was rather placid, though not without some small annoyances along the way. Once they had finished the last of their work for the Sci-Fi Club, Sho and Tetsuro headed for their respective homes, clearly intending to walk together for as long as they could. On their way home, Sho, curious about Agito since Mizuki had clearly taken an interest in him, began to question Tetsuro about the older boy. Tetsuro, who had been close to the older boy some time ago, told him what he knew about Agito's past. Sho, who had grown up with a father, a mother, and a fairly normal life, was sympathetic to Agito's situation. This moments of peace and reflection did not last however as a a small force of Zoanoids - numbering six in all, appeared just a few moments after Tetsuro had finished telling Sho about Agito's past. The two of them started running but Tetsuro, who lacked Sho's - by comparison - greater athleticism, soon began to fall behind. Perused over the side of a steep embankment, Tetsuro and Sho were both siezed by the Zoanoids who had driven them to ground. Sho called the Guyver without hesitation, causing his captor to lose his grip and be knocked backward. After disbatching the four Chronos Troopers that had come after them, both Sho and Tetsuro watched in stunned horror as three of them were killed by a sudden barrage of acid spray. As it turned out, this was the calling-card of the newest Zoanoid - a Hyper-Zoanoid named Zerebubuth - that Chronos had sent out in their latest effort to deal with him permanently. At first, it seemed as if this latest effort of theirs was destined to succeed; Zerebubuth's armored carapace was impervious to Sho's punches, as well as resistant to his Head Beam. Zerebubuth was also equipped with bio-lasers on both arms, in addition to the three acid-dispensing tentacles on his head. Sho was able to breach his carapace in the back with a powerful kick delivered with both legs. However, before he could capitalize on this newly-created weakness in Zerebubuth's armor, the Hyper Zoanoid spotted Mizuki, who had by extreme misfortune happened to be walking by. Leaping to the top of the embankment with a speed that belied his sheer size, Zerebubuth grabbed hold of her, intending to use her as a hostage. However, while Sho himself was prevented from acting against the Hyper Zoanoid for fear of Mizuki's life, others were not so constrained. When Sho finally caught up, he found Mizuki safely on the ground, and a mysterious, darkly-armored figure crowned with six short spines. This, he soon came to realize, was the host of the third Guyver.
• In Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor, Sho Fukamachi was a 2005 anime television series where he was voiced by Japanese actor Kenji Nojima whilst English actor Chris Patton voiced him in the dub version. Sho had to face was a man named Kimura, who worked for Genzo Makishima, and who had been transformed into the Hyper Zoanoid Synevite. Once Synevite made the mistake of taking Tetsuro for a hostage, Sho - having initially been severly battered by the long tentacles of the Zoanoid, and lacking a method to inflict more than superficial damage on the soft body of the squidlike Zoanoid - found new resolve, and with it, a way to use the Guyver's Vibration Blades. Soon enough, Sho was forced to face the most dangerous opponent that he had come up against thus far: a Chronos-aligned Guyver named Oswald Lisker. Forced to fight for his life against Lisker, not even minutes after he had been brutalized by the Zoanoid Synevite, Sho was only able to escape from the vicious Chronos inspector thanks to a fortunate malfunction from Lisker's Control Medal. Returning with Tetsuro to the latter's house, Sho rested from his battle. He also wondered about what he had just seen; while he and Tetsuro waited for Mizuki to finish preparing dinner, Sho discussed his misgivings with his long-time friend. Then, hearing a yell from Mizuki, Sho raced up to her room to see if he could give aid during what he likely thought was some kind of a struggle. However, this turned out to be something of a miscalculation on his part, leading to a great deal of embarrassment on both his and Mizuki's parts. He did, however, stand just outside her door while she regained her composure.

• In Guyver: Out of Control, Sho Fukamachi was a 1986 Japanese original video animation series where he was voiced by Japanese actor Yû Mizushima.
• In The Guyver, an adaptation of the character appeared in the setting of the 1991 live-action film where he was portrayed by actor Jack Armstrong. This version was an American named Sean Baker where he was a college student who had taken some karate classes.
