Biography

Malthael was one of the Angels of the High Heavens where he became an Archangel that sat on the Angiris Council as the Aspect of Wisdom. According to Itherael, when the angels were young, it was Malthael who came to find the Eye of Anu in Pandemonium and named it the Worldstone which all of Angelkind were tasked with protecting.

Long ago, a particular battle saw Malthael and the council battle against the demonic hordes of Hell in Pandemonium. Once there, the Aspect of Wisdom worked in tandem with his comrades in battling Diablo's army. The Prime Evil had laid a trap for the angelic council who managed to defeat the Lord of Terror where they decided to imprison him. However, the fiery temper of Imperius caused him to slay Diablo thus beginning a fracture within the council.

The theft of the Worldstone by Inarius had a notable impact on Malthael who started to become a more brooding and gaunt figure. Unable to fathom that catastrophic event, he abandoned Heaven where his departure created a colossal fracture within the Angiris Council that never recovered his loss. Some believed that he came to haunt the Halls of Pandemonium as he sought answers to the unknowable mysteries of life and death.

After Diablo's defeat in his siege of the High Heavens, a now mortal Tyrael took Malthael's place as the Aspect of Wisdom. Malthael had witnessed these events and had seen the events that had led up to them. Among these included the actions of Zoltun Kulle who was a human who had embraced evil. In addition, he had beheld the latent power of the nephalem hero and saw them defeat the Prime Evil, an act that in all his years of war in the Eternal Conflict, he had never been able to match. Faced with such power, and beholding humanity as an abomination, Malthael resolved to become the embodiment of Death.
