Furukawa was a member of Professor Kusumi's United Nations research team on Sollgel Island. He hated the tropical heat of Sollgel and the island's population of man-sized praying mantises, and eventually went insane and actually tried to swim back home to Japan. He made it down to the beach but was stopped by Fujisaki and the sudden appearance of Godzilla.
