He was tasked with discovering the identity of a leak within Starfleet who was passing information to the Orion Syndicate. During his assignment, Chief O'Brien came to discover that the Syndicate as working with the [[Dominion (Star Trek)|Dominion]] in a plot to destabilise the Klingon-Federation alliance. This information was passed to a Starfleet Intelligence contact named '''Chadwick''' who informed the Klingons of an assassination plot against their ambassador on '''Farius Prime'''. The revelation would have led to the death of the Syndicate team involved in the plot. The Orion Syndicate were an interstellar criminal organization that was created by the Orions.
During the 22nd century, the Orion Syndicate controlled an area of space bordering the Klingon Empire. The area of space between the two powers was a volatile and lawless region known as the Borderland. It was in this region that a group of Augments that were relics from Earth's Eugenics Wars where they attacked a Klingon Bird-of-Prey in 2154 and murdering the crew as well as stealing the ship.
