Biography

Escanor (Japanese: エスカノール, Hepburn: Esukanōru) was a male human born 40 years ago in the lands of Britannia where he was the son of the King and Queen of the Kingdom of Castellio. The young prince was the second born child of the royal family where he had an older brother named Daymond. Though loved by his parents, his older brother used to pick on him for being the one favoured by their parents. This was until one day when Escanor's powers awakened where he came to accidentally break his brother's arm. The incident horrified everyone around him and his parents came to disown him as they believed their child was a monster. Eventually, the kingdom's soldiers were mobilised to kill him but Escanor was saved by a kind woman named Rosa who hid him in a barrel that was set adrift at sea. Thus, he survived the attempt on his life but came to be ostracised by the people who saw his strange appearance as being that o a monster even if he helped them.

He recognised the unconscious Ban in the knights arms and decided to offer them shelter in the cellar where they could hide from their pursuers. Shortly afterwards, his bar was visited by two members of the Demon Clan named Galand and Melascula. Both were high ranking warriors of the demon race's elite force known as the Ten Commandments who had been freed from their 3 thousand year imprisonment. They had come to kill Ban but instead indulged themselves on alcohol in the bar with meek Escanor complying with their demands. Galand then revealed that they were aware the bartender was hiding their quarry but decided to offer him a game whereby they would all be spared. The game was a match to the death where neither of them could flee from the battle and if Escanor refused then the demon would kill him then. The bartender agreed and a light tap from Galand knocked him into a wall leaving the human seemingly unconscious. The two demons then waited till he awoke the next morning where Escanor transformed into his superpowered form and recovered his Sacred Treasure Rhyta from Galand who was studying the axe. Curious at the humans transformation, Galand was amused at how the bartender at become suddenly very prideful with Escanor easily decapitating the demon in a single strike. However, as a demon, Galand was able to restore his body and used his magical power to reach the limits of his power. He then made his own strike at Escanor but this amounted to bare small cut on the human's arm with the Lion Sin of Pride being disappointed. As part of the game, it was now Escanor's turn to strike with his sheer strength terrifying Galand who fled the scene for his life. However, his commandment meant that any promise made in his presence had to be abided otherwise the person breaking it would be turned to stone. Thus, Galand was turned to stone as he fled the battlefield before the fight could be concluded with Escanor being disappointed again in their fight.

Overview

Personality and attributes

His form varied depending on his transformation as normally he appeared as a very meek and weak looking young man with short hair but when the sun was up he could transform into a much more muscular and larger figure. Among the Seven Deadly Sins, he came to be known as the Lion's Sin of Pride and in Britannia he was known as the Strongest Holy Knight. He had his lion tattoo located on his back that marked himself as the Lion Sin.

Upon transforming, a stark change occurred in Escanor's personality where he came to be an incredibly prideful person. Such was his pride that he seemed overconfident in his strength to the point of arrogance. Escanor acknowledged that he was a human being but one who stood at the pinnacle of all races.

Powers and abilities

His magical power was an ability known as Sunshine (太陽サンシャイン Sanshain) that was a power unlike any other. This strength lay with the sun itself where he was the strongest when it was up in the sky and weakest when it was night time. From sunrise, his power began to increase and grew larger over time with this seeing a stark change in his personality. It was shown that his power led to a rise in temperature around him to the point that people remarked on how it had grown hot all of a sudden. In one instance, his soul was consumed by the demon Melascula only for her to experience terrible burns across her body that was heavily damaged as a result. This allowed Escanor's soul to return to his body unscathed. Typically, he could only transform during the day but on some occasions he could perform a partial transformation at night. He was regarded as the strongest of the Seven Deadly Sins with his power level having been higher than Meliodas.

Among the techniques known to him included:

  • Cruel Sun (無慈悲な太陽クルーエル・サン Kurūeru San; literally meaning "Merciless Sun") :
  • Pride Flare (炸裂する傲慢プライド・フレア Puraido Furea; literally meaning "Exploding Arrogance") : Escanor causes his Cruel Sun to flare with heat so intense it is capable of vaporizing a sizable lake in an instant.[7]
  • Crazy Prominence (爆発する矜持クレイジー・プロミネンス Kureijī Purominensu; literally meaning "Exploding Dignity") : Escanor produces a large amount of miniature suns from his body that explode on impact.[8]
  • Final Prominence (終末の業火ファイナルプロミネンス Fainaru Purominensu; literally meaning "Hellfire of the End") :

He was a wielder of a Sacred Treasure with his being Divine Axe Rhitta (神斧 リッタ Jinpu Ritta) that was a giant one-handed axe. It was named after a maiden that was adored by the sun and was so heavy that not even demons could lift it. With his strength, he was shown to be capable of easily decapitating powerful demons with a single strike from his axe.
