The Fog (Young Justice)
The Fog is a device that features in DC Comics Young Justice cartoon series episode "Infiltrator".
History
The Fog was a nanotechnological weapon that was created, unwillingly, by a nanorobotics genius known as Doctor Serlan Roket who was a claytronics expert at Star City. She seemingly vanished from her laboratory but was in fact kidnapped by the League of Shadows who wanted her to create a weapon for them. Over the span of two weeks, she was forced to perfect an advanced form of nanotechnology based on her Utility Fog that was coerced by the League of Shadows or she would be killed. By the second week, she was rescued by Red Arrow but the device she was working on was left behind. This allowed the completed weapon; known as the Fog to fall into the hands of the League of Shadows. Once operational, they used the Fog to steal data from various computerd starting with the Miami Black University with its information systems drained whilst the damage caused left the building to crumble. The stolen data was perfect for extortion, manipulation and power broking which were all hallmarks of the League of Shadows. Upon learning of this, Red Arrow reluctantly arrived at Mount Justice in order to get help to destroy this weapon. In the meantime, Roket was working on a virus to render the Fog inert which made her a target of the Shadows which was part of the reason why Red Arrow needed help in protecting her. Whilst the virus was being prepared, the Fog itself was tracked which led to the Shadows dispatching an assassin to eliminate Dr Roket. During this time, the Fog attacked STAR Labs and completely destroyed the facility.
As Dr Roket was relocated, the Shadows sent a trio of assassins for the job whilst the handler of the Fog was sent to use the nanotech weapon against a WayneTech building. The virus was ultimately completed and Robin managed to upload it into the WayneTech mainframe thus deactivating the Fog and leaving the machiens inert. With its deactivation, the assassination plot on Dr Roket ended as the Shadows felt that they had other uses for her in the future.
Background
In appearance, the Fog was similar to its name as it was seemingly a dark grayish cloud that moved with purpose. However, in actuality, this cloud was composed of microscopic four legged insectile machines that were invisible to the naked eye. The Fog was composed of millions of nano-scale robots that were designed to be infiltrators. They were capable of disintegrating anything within their path be it concrete, steel or even flesh and bone. Despite its destructive power, its true purpose was not destruction but rather data theft as the nanotech machines entered into computer systems where they devoured the stored data. Once consumed, the Fog returned to its storage cylinder where a handler was used to operate the machinery. This allowed the user to gain access to weapon schematics, strategic defense plans as well as cutting edge technology.
According to its creator, it was technically known as a Utility Fog that was brilliant science.
