Dark Reign
Afterwards, Norman Osborn was hailed a hero by the public for killing the Skrull Queen Veranke. This saw Tony Stark removed as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the organization itself being dismantled. Osborn was placed in charge of a successor agency with himself as Director where he formed H.A.M.M.E.R.. He called a meeting with Maria Hill at Thunderbolts Mountain where he stated that he was firing her where she accepted the decision but stated that she would watch as his failed in his position whereupon she would enjoy seeing him topple from power. (Dark Avengers v1 #1)
Return
In the aftermath, she became the liaison to the new incarnation of the Avengers formed by Steve Rogers that were based at Stark Tower. (Avengers v4 #1) They were approached by Kang the Conqueror who warned of the threat posed by the Avengers future children with them impacting the time-stream. (Avengers v4 #2) The disruption to the timeline caused an alternate version of Apocalypse and his Horsemen to attack the Tower thus damaging it where afterwards Hill warned the Avengers of the journey to the future being a trap set up for them. (Avengers v4 #3)
Following this point, S.H.I.E.L.D. continued under the leadership of Director Johnson with Hill being appointed as Acting Director and served as a high ranking Commander in the organisation. It was Hill that launched a secret Avengers initiative that would consist of a team that had memory implants to maintain the secrecy of their operations. In this time, Hill came to work with Bruce Banner and came to enlist the Hulk a part of this black-ops team. During this time, S.H.I.E.L.D. faced a threat from A.I.M. who had re-established themselves as an independent nation based on the island of Barbuda. They had also repurposed the Iron Patriot which they had stolen and imbued with an artificial intelligence that was let loose on the world. (Secret Avengers v2 #4) Afterwards, Director Johnson authorised a black-ops to dispatch a Secret Avengers team to assassinate the Scientist Supreme Andrew Forson. The mission seemingly succeeded but was exposed to the public with this leading to the disgrace of Daisy Johnson who was removed from her position by the security council. As a result, Hill replaced her as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. where she came to learn that Forson had survived the assassination attempt and was now a member of the U.N. security council. (Secret Avengers v2 #5) Afterwards, she headed S.H.I.E.L.D.'s response towards the planet being invaded by the forces of Thanos which saw the detonation of the Terrigen Bomb that awoken the long dormant Inhuman genetics of many people around the world. One was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Sarah Garza who gained superhuman powers and was turned into a field operative where she along with a team were sent to battle the alien invaders. (Secret Avengers v2 #10)
In an effort to find an advantage, Hill was contacted by Taskmaster and the Black Ant who told her that they had some incriminating evidence on Steve Rogers. However, when she arrived at Bagalia, the supervillains were not there. Despite the loss, Maria decided to check Taskmasters computer and saw footage of Steve Rogers secretly declaring his true allegiance to Hydra. She was then attacked by Hydra soldiers and sought to escape from their pursuit. (Captain America: Steve Rogers v1 #16)
With S.H.I.E.L.D. no longer operating, Hill came to operate on retainer with the C.I.A. and was deployed on a number of missions. One of her assignments was tracking down the spy Aidan Tintreach who was engaged in rogue operations with criminal organizations. (Invisible Woman v1 #5) Afterwards, she learnt of insurgent activity involving artificial intelligences on the island of Lingares. Thus, Hill assembled a team of super-powered operatives that included War Machine, Quake, USAgent and Mockingbird who were confronted with Deathloks that were converting the inhabitants of the island into more soldiers. This was because they were built by M.O.D.O.K. to help him acquire Ultimo but the Deathloks turned against in an effort to stop the villain from acquiring the powerful giant robot. Force Works were able to defeat M.O.D.O.K. and Ultimo as well as removed the threat of the Deathloks. (Force Works v1 #3)
