History
Origin
Konohagakure (木ノ葉隠れの里, Konohagakure no Sato, English TV: "Village Hidden in the Leaves" or "Hidden Leaf Village", Literally meaning: Village Hidden by Tree Leaves) was a hidden village of shinobis situated in the Land of Fire in the Ninja World. Its origins were traced back to the Warring States Period when ninja were organised into small mercenary clans that knew nothing but battle. In that time, the two strongest ninja clans were the Senju and Uchiha who had fought another across their entire history. Looking to end the conflict, Hashirama Senju used his position as leader of his clan to broker a truce with the Uchiha by speaking to his childhood friend Madara Uchiha who had headed his people. The resultant peace led to the allies along with any affiliated clan forming the first shinobi village that was Konohagakure whose name was given by Madara himself. Hashirama used his Wood Release abilities to produce much of the village's infrastructure. This ability and his ideals were two of the reasons he was chosen to become the village's leader: the Hokage. Madara, however, feared that the Senju would oppress his clan and attempted to gather support to overthrow Hashirama. No Uchiha would help, forcing him to take on Hashirama by himself. Madara was ultimately defeated at what would be called the Valley of the End and he was believed to have died. As a result of the battle, Konoha came into possession of the Nine-Tails. To contain its enormous power, the village began its trend of sealing the beast within the Uzumaki, a clan that the Senju and thus the rest of Konoha had close ties with. In time, other villages began to form as they followed Konoagakure's example leading to an end to the Warring States Period.
At some point, Hashirama came to bind most of the tailed beasts and sold them to other villages during the First Shinobi World War, to promote peace and tranquility. However, this peace was short-lived with Hashirama dying during the war shortly after the village began to flourish, and the mantle of Hokage was passed onto his brother, Tobirama Senju, who became the Second Hokage. Tobirama would later be killed by Kinkaku during the same war, but appointed Hiruzen Sarutobi as Third Hokage shortly before his death. Years later, during the Second Shinobi World War, Hiruzen led Konoha's forces against Iwa and Suna, using Amegakure as their battleground. Ame's leader, Hanzō, also fought Konoha a number of times, and during one of these battles gave Hiruzen's students - Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru - the title of Sannin. During the Third Shinobi World War, Konoha fought the ninja of Iwagakure across Kusagakure. Konoha was almost defeated, but Minato Namikaze and his team helped turn the war back in their favour.
Naruto
In the midst of the tournament, the sand ninja and their hidden allies the sound ninja betrayed the shinobi of the hidden leaf where they enacted a large scale attack on Konohagakure.
Upon arriving in the village, the Lady Tsunade was inducted as Konogakure's new leader and she took the mantle of the Fifth Hokage.
After Sasuke Uchiha departed the village for Otagakure, the Hokage decided to assemble a makeshift ninja team with the purpose of recovering him and preventing him from becoming a host body for Orochimaru. The team was led by newly elevated Chunin Shikamaru Nara who took talented lower ranking ninja on the mission to intercept the Sound Four ninja who were escorting Sasuke back to their village. Unknown to the team, the Hokage contacted the Village Hidden in the Sands about a joint operation to thwart the scheme of Orochimaru with the two villages forming a temporary alliance.
During this time, Sunagakure and Konohagakure conducted joint training exercises in order to improve the former shinobi's talent pool of ninja.
Afterwards, the leaf came to learn that the sand village had been attacked by the Akatsuki who had abducted their Sazekage and jinchuiriki host. As a result, Konohagakure dispatched a team of ninja to help in the rescue mission.
The village later came to sight the activities of another group of Akatsuki with a shinobi team gathered to capture one of the two travelling pair. Headed by Asuma Sarutobi, they waited in ambush where they attacked Hidan and Kakuzu but despite their numbers they were unable to defeat the pair. The fight came to lead to the death of Asuma Sarutobi though his comrades managed came to escape when reinforcements arrived to counter the Akatsuki who departed after receiving orders from their superiors to withdraw from the scene. This allowed the leaf to take Asuma Sarutobi's body back to the village where he was mourned by his fellow shinobi.
Later on, the hidden leaf was subjected to an attack from Pain of the Akatsuki who bypassed its defensive lines and struck at it from its heart. With his Six Paths, he was able to devastate Konoha as he continued his search for Naruto Uzumaki in order to claim the Nine-Tails within him. Pain was able to massacre much of the village but the hidden leaf refused to tell him Naruto's location. However, the Akatsuki member came to probe the mind of one of the ninja of Konohagakure and learnt that he was in Mount Myōboku. He then used one of his most powerful technique to level much of the village as he intended to eliminate all opposition. Though many were killed, Lady Tsunade managed to save many more by lending her chakra to her summons who helped heal anyone injured. Seemingly unable to stop Pain, the villain was then confronted by Naruto who had arrived back in time after hearing word of the attack. Using his Sage Mode, he managed to fight Pain almost evenly but nearly lost control of his Tailed-Beast after the Akatsuki member seemingly killed Hinata. He later managed to regain control of himself where he confronted the real Pain and managed to convince him to end his attack on Konogakure. In Naruto, Pain saw someone that could end the endless cycle of violence in the ninja world and decided to sacrifice himself to use a rebirth jutsu that restored all the dead in Konohagakure back to life. As he died, Konan took her friend's body with her as she abandoned the Akatsuki. In the aftermath, Naruto was hailed as the hero of the hidden leaf as they set about rebuilding their village.
It was later learnt though that the strain from the battle had taken a terrible toll on Lady Tsunade who had fallen into an coma. The tribal elders then came to appoint Danzō Shimura as her candidate replacement after he had placed himself into the position.
Next Generations
During the Sixth and Seventh Hokage's era, the hidden village that was Konoha had stopped being hidden and instead become the first metropolitan area in the Land of Fire. Stores which had been in business since the village's founding grew into 24 hour businesses, and due to condos housing hundreds of people, it brought in more immigrants. Konoha's population eventually turned prominently non-shinobi, due to the Academy introducing a general studies department, with its ninjutsu department falling below quota in the peaceful era. Military budget was considered to be lowered in order to focus on other projects, leading to decreased funding for organisations such as the Anbu. The village expanded to the land behind the Hokage Rock and installed the Thunder Rail throughout the village, leading to Konoha being regarded as a city rather than a village.
During the Chunnin Exams, the contestants managed to reach the final round of the matches when they were interrupted by the arrival of members of the Ōtsutsuki Clan. These horned celestial beings had come in order to claim the chakra of the Nine-Tails from the Hokage leading to a battle with Naruto. Due to civilians being around, Naruto was unable to unleash his full power leading to his capture with the village attempting to deal with the aftermath of the devastation. In this time, Sasuke along with the other Kage as well as Boruto Uzumaki went forth to help find and rescue Naruto from the Otsutsuki Clan.
