Biography

Origin

Shoto Todoroki in My Hero Academia v1 #5.

Shōto Todoroki (Japanese: 轟 焦凍, Hepburn: Todoroki Shōto) was the youngest son of Enji Todoroki and Rei Todoroki. During the rise of a superhuman society, one of the developments that came was the use of Quirk Marriages. These were treated as a form of arranged marriage though the purpose was to get forcibly marry two parents with strong Quirks in the hope that their offspring would inherit both powersets thus making them incredibly strong. With this in mind, Enji Todoroki forcibly married Rei who was a powerful ice user with this being achieved by using his wealth, power and influence to convince her family. Though unhappy, Rei consented to the marriage with their union leading to their youngest son who was Shoto Todoroki that gained his fathers fire abilities and his mothers ice powers. Enji Todoroki as the second ranked hero named Endeavor intended for his son to train and surpass All Might with him submitting his child to incredibly harsh training. His mother tried to protect her son but was rebuffed by his father who struck Rei in front of the young Shoto. As a result, Shoto could only remember a hard life and most of his memories of his mother was of her crying. Over time, he came to resent his father who prevented the young Todoroki from even meeting his own siblings. The only comfort he ever had was from his mother who encouraged him to become a hero. In his youth, he watched a TV special on All Might who encouraged children with Quirks to make their powers their own with Rei telling Shoto that he was not a prisoner of his bloodline and that he could use his powers as he desired. Events later changed when years of domestic abuse took their toll on Rei with her unable to bear to look at Shoto's left side as it reminded her of Enji. One day, she was on the phone to her own mother talking about her trauma and that she came to recognise that she was no longer mentally stable to raise her child. At that moment, Shoto arrived whose sudden appearance startled his mother and when Rei saw his left side she snapped and threw boiling water over the boy face leaving him with a burn mark over his left eye. In the aftermath, Rei disappeared and when Shoto asked about his mother, Enji told her that he had her sent to the hospital for hurting him. Despite the injury, Shoto never blamed his mother and instead attributed fault to his father for everything that happened in their family. The years of anger and resentment caused Shoto to forget the words of support his mother gave him on becoming a hero whose powers were his own with the young Todoroki vowing to never use his left side fire based powers as a sign of rejection of his father.

Todoroki participated in the U.A. Recommendation Entrance Exam, where he encountered Inasa Yoarashi. Inasa tried to ask Shoto about his father, but was totally blown off. Both of them raced in the same leg of the practical exam, Inasa just barely taking first place in front of Shoto. Inasa tried to befriend Shoto yet again, but Shoto insults him and tells him to get out of his way. Through official recommendation, he came to be admitted into U.A. High School where managed to score second place in the Quirk Apprehension Test given by his class teacher Shota Aizawa.

U.A.

The next day of school, All Might gives the class a Basic Hero Training lesson. He announces that the class will take part in combat training and instructs them to suit up in their hero costumes where Shoto was paired up with Mezo Shoji. During Katsuki Bakugo and Izuku Midoriya's fight, Shoto is surprised by Katsuki's cleverness and motor skills in using his explosions. For the second match, Shoto and Mezo are the Heroes against Mashirao Ojiro and Toru Hagakure as the Villains. Mezo tells Shoto the locations of their enemies and reveals they're both barefooted and is likely looking to ambush them. Shoto instructs Mezo to exit the building for his own safety and then freezes it with his Quirk. Mashirao and Toru end up frozen to the ground and Shoto walks into the room to confront both of them. Mashirao takes a fighting stance and Shoto warns him that if he moves he'll rip the skin off the bottom of his feet. With both of his opponents frozen, Shoto effortlessly walks past them and touches the fake weapon to secure Team B's victory. He tells Mashirao not to feel bad about his loss because they're simply playing on different levels of skill. During their next homeroom class, Class 1-A is instructed to choose a Class President, and Tenya Ida suggests they take it to a vote. Unlike the majority of the class, Shoto does not vote for himself and instead votes for Momo Yaoyorozu. In Hero Basic Training class, Class 1-A is assigned to Rescue Training in an off-campus facility. During the bus ride there, many of his classmates discuss their Quirks while Shoto remains in the back of the bus with his eyes closed. Eijiro Kirishima comments that Shoto's Quirk was perfect for becoming a famous hero.

The class reaches the training facility, Unforeseen Simulation Joint, and are greeted by Space Hero, Thirteen, who built the facility. It was built as a training area for aspiring heroes to practice using their Quirks to save people. However, rescue training was interrupted by the arrival of several villains. While many of his classmates are paralyzed with fear, Shoto surmises that the villains have a Quirk user among their ranks that can jam communications. He figures that the villains have a concrete objective in mind, understanding that no villain would plan this ambush without a scheme in mind. Shoto tries to evacuate with his class, but they are separated and warped into different simulation zones of the U.S.J. Shoto ends up in the Landslide Zone and immediately freezes the villains waiting for him there. He taunts them, saying they should be ashamed for being easily bested by a child. More villains attack, but Shoto easily counters and incapacitates them as well. He warns the villains that if their bodies remain frozen, they will die. He offers to unfreeze them in exchange for information on their objectives. One of the fearful thugs tells Shoto they came to the U.S.J. to kill All Might. Shoto makes his way to the central plaza to find All Might trapped by Kurogiri and Nomu. Shoto freezes half of Nomu's body to help All Might get free, and boasts that the Symbol of Peace will not die on this day. After getting up, All Might refuses any help from the students, so Shoto stays back and watches in awe of All Might's incredible power as he defeats Nomu. Shoto believes All Might will handle the rest of the villains as well and decides to stay back, but Izuku Midoriya rushes in to help All Might. Just as Kurogiri and Tomura Shigaraki attack, Tenya returns to the U.S.J. with Pro Heroes as reinforcements. The villains are forced to retreat, and Shoto gathers outside the facility with his classmates. He overhears Toru talking with Mashirao about the battle in the Landslide Zone. She talks about how amazing Shoto was, but he thinks to himself about how he never even noticed she was there and how he could have accidentally frozen her. Afterward, Shoto and the others return to school.

Two days after the attack on the U.S.J., Shoto and his classmates return to school and are lectured about the importance of the upcoming U.A. Sports Festival during their homeroom class. At lunch, Shoto's interest is piqued when he overhears Ochaco Uraraka and Tenya talking about All Might taking a liking to Izuku. As the school day ends, Class 1-A is unable to leave their class thanks to the mob of students blocking the exit. The students are from other classes and are there to scope out their competition for the festival. Katsuki makes them all angry with his arrogant comments, putting a target on the backs of the students in Class 1-A. For the next two weeks, Shoto and his classmates train in order to prepare for the Sports Festival. When the day comes, Shoto and his classmates prepare in their designated waiting area by changing into their P.E. clothes. Shoto approaches Izuku and tells him that despite All Might's interest in Izuku, Shoto believes he is obviously the stronger of the two. He goes on to express his intentions to defeat Izuku in the Sports Festival. Eijiro tries to diffuse the tension, but Shoto refuses him and reminds everyone that the festival is not a team effort. Before Shoto leaves, Izuku admits that although Shoto is stronger, he will still try his best to come out on top in the festival. Shoto stoically accepts the challenge and leaves the room with the rest of his class to enter the arena. Once Midnight explains the rules and directs the pledge, the preliminary games begin. The first round is an obstacle race four kilometers around the area. Shoto gets a head start when he freezes the cluttered corridor but is surprised to find that many students were able to avoid his attack. Several giant villain bots then appear to block his path. Shoto surmises that these are the same bots that the students who took the entrance exam had to face. While impressed with the obstacle, Shoto wishes the U.A. faculty could have offered him something more difficult since his father was watching. Shoto proceeds to freeze the robot while it is off balance and run past it as it falls and blocks the way of those behind him in the race.

Keeping his early lead, Shoto easily clears the next obstacle: The Fall. It is a large canyon that must be trekked by crossing tightropes. Shoto freezes a path through the fall but notices Katsuki gaining on him. Shoto reaches the final leg of the race; a Mine Field meant to burden those in the lead. He has to walk through the area carefully, allowing Katsuki to catch up to him. Angered, Katsuki states that Shoto issued his declaration of war to the wrong rival and the two start to fight for first place as they run. Moments later, Shoto watches in bewilderment as Izuku flies towards him and Katsuki after riding the momentum from an explosion he created. Izuku manages to pass them, but Shoto catches up to him quickly by creating an ice path. Shoto realizes this will help others cross the Mine Field, but he has no choice if he wants to win the race. Before he or Katsuki are able to reclaim the lead, Izuku triggers another explosion that momentarily stops them both. Although close behind, Shoto crosses the finish line second after Izuku. Even though he is unhappy about not taking first place, Shoto qualifies for the second event; The Cavalry Battle.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Shoto Todoroki was a reasonably tall and muscular young man who was well-built for his age. He tended to be known by the short name of Shoto (ショート Shōto?).

When he was young, his mentally unbalanced mother lashed out at Shoto where she poured boiling water over his left side leaving a burn mark that scarred him for life.

At first, he was shown to possess a cold and aloof personality that stemmed from his abusive upbringing and complicated family life. Focused and unemotional, he had a preference to keep to himself instead of hanging out with other people.

Though quiet and reserved, Shoto had a certain degree of arrogance that when combined with his solitary tendencies led to him taking the initiative without considering the opinion of others. Such was his display of confidence of his own abilities that he believed he could take on any obstacle on his own strength and thus did not think he needed help. Typically, he showed a preference to work alone but for practical reasons was capable of working with others.

For a time, he came to only use his right side's abilities and focused only on using his ice powers. This stemmed from a resentment of his father and a desire to deny his wishes. However, Izuku Midoriya came to convince Shoto that these powers were his own and did not belong to his father. This led to Todoroki starting to use both sides of his Quirk which he could use to devastating effect.

He was the son of Enji Todoroki (轟とどろき炎えん司じ Todoroki Enji?) and Rei Todoroki Rei Todoroki (轟とどろき冷れい Todoroki Rei?) where the couple had a Quirk based marriage. He had several siblings including his eldest brother Toya Todoroki (轟とどろき燈とう矢や Todoroki Tōya?), his older sister Fuyumi Todoroki (轟とどろき燈とう矢や Todoroki Tōya?) and his other older brother Natsuo Todoroki (轟とどろき夏なつ雄お Todoroki Natsuo?).

Similar to his siblings, he came to resent his father for how strict and cruel he was to the family. He also had hated how his father only viewed him as a tool and had originally vowed to become the number one hero without ever using his fire abilities as a form of rebellion. As such, Shoto for a time was resolved to never use his left side's abilities. Later on, his father was shown to had been ashamed of his treatment of his son and family with him looking to make amendments with them.

Powers and abilities

Shoto Todoroki was a human born with a Quirk (個こ性せい Kosei?, lit. "Individuality") that gave him superhuman abilities with this manifesting as a power called Fire and Ice (半冷半燃, Hanrei Hannen) which was the result of his parents Quirk marriage. As his father was a fire user and his mother was an ice user, Todoroki himself gained both his parents abilities which was visibly seen on his body. As such, his left side was able to control fire whilst his right side could manifest ice. It was known that overusing his powers could cause him to suffer from overheating or frostbite. He underwent intensive training from a young age by his father who wanted his son to surpass him.

A very intelligent person, Shoto was very skilled in academics and had scored 5th place in the midterm.

With his right side, he could drastically lower the temperatures and freeze anything he touched and could generate ice that he could freely mold into numerous constructs ranging from ice waves that cover large areas to ice barriers.

From a young age, he came to be trained by his father Endeavor where he was established as one of the strongest students in Class 1-A of U.A. High School.

Among the techniques known to him included:

  • Heaven-Piercing Ice Wall (穿が天てん氷ひょう壁へき Gaten Hyōheki?) : using his ability powers, Shoto created an enormous ice glacier that could either encase his opponents or serve as a barrier on the battlefield.
  • Wall of Flames (炎ほのおの壁かべ Honō no Kabe?) : by using his left side, he could generate a burst of flames that covers a large area that could be used to attack enemies or also serve as a barrier against an opponent.
  • Flashfreeze Heatwave (膨ぼう冷れい熱ねっ波ぱ Bōrei Neppa?) :
  • Flashfire Fist (赫かく灼しゃく熱ねっ拳けん Kaku Shakunekken?) : the signature move of his father Endeavor that was passed down to Shoto whereby he increased the temperature of his flames to their maximum and compressed them to a white-hot point thus maximizing its power.
  • Flashfire Fist - Jet Kindling (赫かく灼しゃく熱ねっ拳けん 噴ふん流りゅう熾し炎えん Kaku Shakunekken Funryūshien?) :
  • Jet Kindling (赫かく灼しゃく熱ねっ拳けん 噴ふん流りゅう熾し炎えん Kaku Shakunekken Funryūshien?) :

Following his winter internship with his father, he came to upgrade his hero costume with the third iteration of it being optimised so that he could use both Shoto's fire and ice abilities in combat. It was modified to diminish any drawbacks from the use of his Quirk by regulating his body temperature.

Through official recommendations, he came to be a student at U.A. High School and was placed in Class 1-A.
