History

The Iron Spider in Amazing Spider-Man v1 #529.

The Iron Spider was a type of armored suit created by Tony Stark for Spider-Man as a replacement for his Spider-Man costume. Spider-Man tested the suit where he helped foil a kidnapping where he was shown to be pleased with the armor. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #529)

The Iron Spider armor costume has been duplicated and used by MVP's three genetic clones in the Initiative who identify themselves as Red Team and also labeled the Scarlet Spiders. It is unknown as to what new powers the team possesses, but they have been shown to use some of the built-in powers such as the cloaking device, communications, and waldoes which the original costume possessed. (Avengers: The Initiative v1 #3)

After Avengers Tower was sold, the content within the building was moved to the new Avengers headquarters in crates. When Spider-Man and Iron Man battled Regent, Mary Jane Watson decided to help where she decided to wear the Iron Spider armor. (Amazing Spider-Man v4 #15) At some point, the criminal outfitter Ceres managed to acquire the suit and performed some upgrades on it with it being in her arsenal. By this time, Aaron Davis was looking to perform a hit to steal a lot of money and was looking for a gang of supervillains to form. Upon seeing the Iron Spider suit, he bought it from Ceres and used it as he became a costumed supervillain with him taking the name Iron Spider. (Spider-Man v1 #234)

Overview

Mesh-webbing was incorporated into the design that allowed for limited gliding over short distances. It was outfitted with heat-resistant Kevlar micro-fibre that can resist smaller calibre bullets. The armor had a built-in fire, police and emergency scanner along with audio and visual amplification that included infrared and ultraviolet. Carbon filters in the mouth region prevented toxins from being inhaled by the wearer. There was also a short-range GPS microwave communication system built into the suit. All these systems were routed through a computerised control system in the titanium chest plate. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #529)

The Iron Spider armor also has a secret override that can be activated by Iron Man in case of emergencies or if Spider-Man ever switches sides. However, unknown to Stark, Peter was already aware of the safety measure and had bypassed it with his own override, Passcode Surprise. Perhaps most sinister, Stark discovered a way to give his own Iron Man armor a "spider-sense" based on Peter's, and the ability to give Spider-Man's sense red herrings. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #536)

Television

  • In Ultimate Spider-Man, the Iron Spider Armor made multiple appearances in the animated series. It first appeared in the episode "Flight of the Iron Spider" where it was shown that the armor was built by Tony Stark for Spider-Man who he wanted to train under his wing. Ultimately, Spider-Man decided not to actively use the armor but instead his own abilities. His inexperience led to minor disasters each mission he used it, angering his fellow teammates. When Living Laser possessed his suit, Spider-Man was forced to battle Iron Man, allowing Laser to possess Stark's suit after. With a improved version of the Iron Spider suit, Spider-Man was aided by the trainees to fight Iron Man/Living Laser. Spider-Man managed to wake up Stark so he could remove Laser from the armor, the villain was ultimately defeated when Spider-Man used him in a machine which teleported him to an alternate universe. The armor was modified by S.H.I.E.L.D. to transform into a backpack for incognito purposes. In "The Next Iron Spider", high school genius Amadeus Cho took the Iron Spider armor and showed that he was able to operate it when he participated in a fight against Taskmaster. Afterwards, he became a member of Spider-Man's Web Warriors that were assembled by Nick Fury.

Initially, Iron Man had intended to use it to send the hero back to Earth's surface but he managed to sneak his way into the craft where he aided Stark in battling the villains.
